Everyone seemed to like my last years season so will do it again. The draws are done and I ended up with a bunch of tags, and longer seasons then last year. I have a OTC either sex elk, cow tag, November muly buck (rifle tag but will bowhunt it) bear tag, turkey tag, and a antelope tag. I also hope to get a doe tag. Been scouting alot and the elk, deer, and bear numbers are great way better then last year! Got a few cameras out and have hundreds of pics. heres a few samples.

And for some reason no matter where in this state I go I find these.

I plan on being in the South San Juan Wilderness come 8/29/09. I should have lots of pics when I get back. I plan on staying at least two days fron the trail head. Its going to be a good test for my new Go-Lite tarp.
MAP
-
MP what area you hunting? Its going to be a great year, again like last year lots of elk close to the road that 99% of the guys walk past up the mountain! also if you could let me know how the Go-lite tarp works.
-
Hmmmmm. Out of staters don't get to apply for OTC tags until mid-July, right?
-
OTC is over the counter no need to apply, just gota drop the coin.
-
Adam , great pics
-
I can't wait to get the cameras, haven't checked them in a while! I've been getting a ton of bear pics, and they keep messing with the cameras. Smallwood we should get together and hunt one of these days. On a side note I should draw 76 next year!!!!!!!!!!!
-
So far I've just had the go-lite set up out here in AZ. I use it to give me enough space to keep my gear dry and to keep the snow off. It does not keep the bugs off. So when they are bad I have to zip up my bivy. Its hard to test stuff here unless your goal is to see how it takes the heat. I am still looking for hot weather gear that is somewhat cactus resistant. I hope to get at least one good snow while I'm in CO. Last time it buried my truck, it took awhile to figure out which snowdrift was mine.
MAP
-
For hot weather you might want to look into a hammock setup. Been talking to a few guys who use them and it sounds like the way to go!
-
Great pix...looks like you are off to a good start for this coming season.
-
Oh I forgot to say where I was headed. I'll be somewhere between Elk Creek and the South Fork of the Conejos. Depends on how things look when I get there.
MAP
-
Not to far from me, your driving through some great hunting though. Shoot me a line maybe we can meet up and compair note's while your passing through.
-
I normally come thru Cortez and then take 160 across and stop off in Durango to get my tags. I normally hunt the Weminuche w. But have also been in Lizzard Head the Flat tops and the San Juan. Its all good! I'm still waiting for my first above timberline muley tag. I can't complain, here in AZ I can walk out of the wilderness areas in at most 3 days. In CO I can spend a week and not even get from one side to the other.

Man been busy! I just was in WI spearfishing now off to Hawaii in 11 days. Been dragging butt this weekend after getting 4 wisdom teeth yanked. Still getting a ton of elk, deer, and bear pics here's a neet newer one (theres just way to many to post them all).
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/wifishkiller/Colorado%20hunting%202009/DoveCreek-July6ropeladder.jpg)I also moved some camera's into a spot that hopefully a few tradgangers will get to scare a few bulls!

-
I see about 2 to 3 a year without hounds. Lots of cats!
-
looking good Adam, we are sorting gear and counting the days.
-
Same here shooting a ton! I got off that friday before season so we are good to go on a day of setting up camp and catching some fish. I'm doing a ton of scouting and I found a new hidden draw thats loaded with elk. Kind of a pain busting through the ok brush to get to the first ridge but worth it!
-
I'll be right behind you, new bow arrived just in time, picking it up in the am.......
-
Well I was able to get out and glass the area I was hopiung to hunt with some fellow tradgangers and its looking great! Glast for about 20 minutes and saw a small group of 6 elk and a few deer. also set up the camera at the house and got a few pics.

-
Now THAT'S a great idea! I'm all ears. gehrke145, perhaps you're on our end of the state?
-
I'm a ways from you guys down east of Durango, lots of birds and some great fishing!
-
I was just down your way in June, on my way to the BHA Rendezvous and some backpacking in the Weminuche.
-
Did you do any fishing?
-
Up for one week left! Ran the cameras, glassed some elk. Ordered some goodies and saw a good one right from the road! And the updated pics.

Sounds good buddy have a safe drive, and see you Thursday night. Well if its slow, shoot me a call when you get into town.
-
My mind is already in the mountains but my form is still in corn country. Elk roast for dinner Tuesday when Jim gets here - a little reminder to shoot straight when the chance comes. Then pack the gear and head west on Wednesday morning. 5 and a wake up till elk day!
-
Well LITTLEBIGMAN and Shaun made it down here ok and things are looking good. I saw a few 5xs this morning. So as soon as it gets light we will regroup and hang a few stands for Saturday!
-
Best of luck, fellas! I'm heading out early this afternoon for my hike in to my little basin. Looking forward to a great weekend with the elk, my bow, and my wits.
-
Good Luck Guys! I'll be in the Weminuche on Tues. with an elk and deer tag in my pocket. Wish I could get there sooner! This wait is killin' me. Have fun!
Don

Love the pics! First time in 10 years I have not been in elk country. Had a health issue that kept me out of the Rio Grande Nat'l Forrest this go round. The pics make me homesick for a view of Sheep and Windy mountain. Go get 'em boys! Post pics for this flatlander when you do. PLEASE!
-
Have a great time, guys. Maybe one day we'll meet in the mountains.
homebru aka nathan in parker, co

I'm back for three days then back out for 12 off. So far a passed shot on a calf and the bulls are SCREAMING!!!!!!!!!! Also now the bear tag will be good and the turkey tag aswell! I'm thinking after I get back there will be some new pics with some hopefully bloody arrows. Jim and Shaun are fun to hunt with and will try to check in on them a few more time and maybe be the caller again.
-
A few pics,
shooting in camp, (no I dont hunt in those shoes lol) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/wifishkiller/Colorado%20hunting%202009/IMG_0915.jpg)
Me and Jim talking a break, shortly after this pic we had a cow, and calf almost run us over. I passed on the calf, and the cow was moving a little fast for a shot. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/wifishkiller/Colorado%20hunting%202009/IMG_0916.jpg)
And the little Beltcher riser with short ILF limbs. 56 inches and 50 LBS at my 28 inch draw, I love this thing, no more titans for me! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/wifishkiller/Colorado%20hunting%202009/IMG_0917.jpg)
-
Well just a matter of time for the nice bull, been on them every day. Took a day of rest and went out after turkeys.

Nice bird!!!

Hi all,
Nice post, nice pictures and the most important for me, nice information. I am planning a drop hunt for elk the next year in Colorado, probably at San Juan. I am preparing everything since now as far as I live in Spain, not very close from there.... I started the research with some outfitters for the drop hunt, any recommendation for me??
Congrats on these unforgetable hunting days!!
-
 :clapper:
-
Great divide is a good one, If you have backpacking gear thats the way to go. I would just have a line on some pack horses. Thanks on the comments guys. A 20 yard shot after my dad missed one with his compound!
-
Excellent. Thanks for posting all the pictures.
Good luck with the elk!
-
:campfire:
-
Cool thread, congrats on the bird!
-
Thanks for the help Gehrkel145. Yes, we will have some pack horses. About Great Divide, which units cover that place?. Sorry if this is a stupid question....
-
75/751 for great divide, just got on in from a quick morning hunt, I passed on a cow again. My dad filled his turkey tag, so off in a few minutes back to the lease. More pics to come!
-
Thanks gehrkel145, good luck with your Elks!!!, let us know and let´s see those pics......
-
nice pic's and congrats on the turkey
-
Great trophy!

Well back for a few days of much needed rest! My dad filled his deer tag, (wheel bow kill so no pics) I passed on another cow, and saw some monsters on the lease. I have to say the lease thing is fun but its not like hiking in the backcountry! I'm finishing up the rest of the season on good old public land in BFE. Here's another cat, since they seem to follow me around everywhere! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/wifishkiller/Colorado%20hunting%202009/MDGC0027.jpg)
