Does anyone have any areas to suggest for mulies in area Y of the Bighorns. I realize the wilderness area is out for non-residents, so I need something elsewhere. My son and a friend just bought leftover tags and have never hunted outside of Wisconsin,so they're not looking for a trophy producing honey-hole, just a chance to get into some deer. Even a general "over there" on the map would be appreciated. Thanks.

The foot hills around the bighorns are loaded with mulies. The kaycee area or just about anywhere around the range at lower elavation. I've hunted in the powder river forks and I never seen so many deer. But that was 30 years ago. I bet there ia still a few. I shot a 7X6 and it was small compared to some that I seen on that trip. I used to live in Casper.

Just stay around the face of the mts, or just on top, there are alot more deer at that elevation than up towards timberline.

Thanks for the hints,guys. Right now they're in the preliminary decision making, trying to choose between using Hwy 16 or going north toward the Hwy 14/Alt 14 route. Anybody?

I have spent a couple of years Fly-fishing in the Buffalo area and always see a lot of mulies in the foothills. Some real nice bucks. My father in law has killed a few mulies in that area with his recurve. There are a lot of different camp sites to camp at also. We usually camp at the TY Hack camp site.

clermont area has some nice mulies also over by buffalo. My wife is from sheridan

Everybody is giving you good advice. Lower elevations hold gobs of deer. Hwy 16 will give a bit easier access than 14, which is under construction right now. If you want to hunt public ground, look at Hunter Mesa to Sourdough Creek. You probably won't find any monsters, but there are plenty of deer. Someone else mentioned Tie Hack; nice campground, nice lake, a few dumb mulies.
I took this photo this morning; hoping for elk but seeing deer. I probably saw at least 20 mule deer within a quarter of a mile of where this picture was taken; a couple were starting to get some pretty good antler growth, but they were too far off for a decent photo. Anyhow, this is looking southwest near Hunter Mesa, elevation about 8000'.

I miss the BigHorns. They are some of the prettiest mountains in the continental US. Tie Hack is that by dead swede? Nice fly fishing area. I love glassing from the top of sheeps head. Can see alot of area 39 from up there.Also enjoy the view from freeze out. I remember one year we were hiking up to freeze out to have an afternoon picnic. In the group was my wife, MnL FnL and kids. Well my wife had her hair done up in one of those poofy hair do's. You guys know the kind.Anyways as we were heading up the trail to look out from freeze out one of those little pine squirrels started chhatting.
What happened next kind of happened in slow motion (if you know what I mean) This pine squirrel launch himself out of the tree and into my wifes hairdo. She went ballistic flailing her arms all over and screaming which scared my mother n law,who was carrying the picnic basket
The picnic basket went flying into the air and the last time I seen it, it was heading out over freeze out ;-) My father n law was bent over double laughing while my wife was jumping around trying to get this squirell out of her hair.
OMG it looked like something out of the keystone cops!!!

Nighthawk, Tie Flume is the campground by Dead Swede (off Hwy 14). Tie Hack is off Hwy 16. The great squirrel adventure had to be a lot of fun to watch, although your wife would probably disagree.

Nighthawk, I was at Freezeout a couple of years ago. I was wondering how that picnic basket got there. By the way, tell your wife "Thanks" for the lunch! ;)
