I don't have any experience for which to make an assessment on how many yotes we have, here, but we see them from time to time....and I'll get one on trailcam every so often.
This time of year, there's no other hunting season open, so.....the mind wanders.
Do any of you guys hunt them in the summer? What tactics do you employ?
I had a buddy in from OH, turkey hunting, and he missed one with his compound that came in to my turkey calls. But honestly, that's the first time I've seen one while hunting, here (over 300 sits - deer and turkey hunting over 4 yrs).
I'm not afraid of getting skunked.....lol. I haven't drawn back on a turkey in 2 seasons....lol. If it's futile, though, I'm no glutton for punishment.
Whatcha think? How do you do it?

I have only tried it a few times around where I live and even though I never did shoot one, they came pretty close. My advice is to have a good rabit or bleating fawn call (or maybe even have a buddy do that for you so you can be ready with your bow). Make SURE you have the wind at your face when you are hunting the coyotes, and if you have something like a river or a cliff face behind you that would prevent them from making a huge circle around you (to try and smell you). You could even go and buy one of those moving decoys. I hear they work pretty well. Good luck with your hunting and post back up when you get something!

Jeff, its time to start hunting them around here, the pups are old enough to make it on their own. I go after them with the rifle and longbow. I found that this time of year a locator howl or 2 then a fawn in distress will draw them right in. Brings the Does in as well. If they hang up on ya a mouse squeaker will get their attention and they can't resist! I like the wind to the side of my face so I can try a catch them circling me to get a whiff of whats making all the ruckus. If its in your face make sure there's no way they can get down wind of you, they don't stick around when they smell ya, gone in a split second!
I took this pic last week, this was the first time in years I didn't have a bow or gun with me while scouting. I watched him for 15 minutes.

We can only hunt them in the fall here in NY. I am fortunate to have a friend invite me to bowhunt them this year. He's been gun hunting them and has been quite sucessful during the hour of 9am to 2pm.
He uses an electronic caller, rabbit in distress. He places a rabbit "decoy" out about 40 yds in any small clearing. Its a waiting game...Going to need the decoy 30 yds max for me with the bow but with good camo and remaining still, he feels we should do OK.
I use a Burnham Brothers rabbit in distress call for foxes here and find them to come in rather quickly whereas the few coyotes that responded came in slow and wary. It definately is a challenge here with the bow.

If your a glutton for punishment like you say then the yote is your huckleberry.Theyre really tough until you stop looking for them and the theyre everywhere.Awesome critters and a prime, fall yote is one of the nicent looking creatures in any man cave.I have a rug and a few skull mounts but never hunted them in the summer.Good luck with them.
