Title: Need some cresting help
Post by: Caleb the bow breaker on August 03, 2009, 10:52:00 AM
Got some new shafts and trying to get them painted up.  Here is my plan.

Arrows are Hickory so trying to stay away from water based products

minwax stain

1 coat semi gloss lacquer (to seal)

Rust o leum spray paint Taped and spraye for "crown dip"

Testors enamels for cresting lines

3-4 coats minwas Spar Urethane (seal and weatherproof)

Duco cement for fletch

Is this going to work?  Any input?

This will be my first set of arrows to crest.  Usually I just spray a white cap and then several coats of Poly.  Have been pleased.  I am worried about cresting paint "running" unless I seal the shafts first. All input is appreciated

Testors won't run on the crown spray you do. I use Krylon and is similar to Rustoleum. Wait until dry and seal.  I do what you do basically but only do 2 final coats of Minwax wipe on poly.

Caleb, I prefer the regular Minwax Fast Dry Oil Base Poly for the seal coats, including the first coat, and do two dips under the crown and one over.  The poly will darken your crown and crest a bit.  I'm not sure how well the later coats of poly will sit on the lacquer, either.  The spar urethane is a softer finish than the regular poly and seems to have target burn issues and may not wear as well.  If you are dipping, thin the poly about 3 or 4 to 1 with a good mineral spirits thinner.  It is plenty weather and water proof.  I've had issues with Testors enamels wanting to run with the polys, so give it plenty of drying time.
