Title: Antelope hunting tips
Post by: Michael Arnette on August 03, 2009, 01:10:00 PM
I was wondering if any of you guys would have some tips for a greenhorn on stickbow Antelope. I got invited to go with a fellow trad ganger in SD. I was wondering what time is best to go? Also have any of you had any luck with decoys/calls? Any spot and stalk info would be helpfull. If nothing else I will get to see lots of my favorite American species. Can't wait!

I'm no expert, but have taken a few in Wyoming and Montana.  I believe that from mid to late September they are rutting which makes hunting these critters entertaining.

One tactic I used successfully was to find a fence crossing (common for them to cross at the same spot) and set up a blind of some sort about 20 yards from there.

Another is to set up a blind at water holes or windmills since they tend to drink daily.  Even though they tend to drink mostly at mid-morning, be there before daylight to see everything come alive.

I've used decoys but never had enough success with that method even though I've read about its effectiveness for some hunters.

Lots of good information there.

The fence crossing tip is one you don't hear mentioned often.Where I hunt, there are so many water sources and no topography or cover for stalking, most of the times so fence crossings are the best way.
