Title: TS-1 Strand Count Question
Post by: Bowhntr on September 18, 2009, 02:38:00 PM
Here's one for all you string twisters, I just ordered two spools of TS-1 from 3R. I'm shooting a 64@29 hybrid longbow that is 60" AMO. My question is how many strands should I use in the string? I'm not looking for a skinny string, just one that is safe and reliable. Also do I need to pad the loops still? These are flemish twist strings I'm making.

Thanks,
Tom

I build mine with 12 strands with 6 extra strands in the loops. 3 Rivers sells thiers with 18 strands. I make a triple flemish (3 bundles). 15 strands strings also works great for me. I still pad these strings.... The nice thing is you can play with the strand count until you find what works best for you.

I use TS-1 but make endless loop strings and I do pad the loops.  I shoot a 69# @29" Shrew Classic Hunter and I use an 8 strand string (4 loops) and use an additonal 8 strands in the loops.   For my 60# Classic Hunter I use a 6 strand endless loop string.  If you use more strands than that I feel pretty confident you will have a safe string.  Can't comment on flemish twist strings.

I've been shooting 58-60# at 30" and use 12-14 strands.  I do pad the loops with 4-6 strands to be on the safe side.

I experimented with a 10 strand string and it was pretty nice.  Keep in mind that 1 strand of TS-1 can handle the rigor of a trad bow.  Keep in mind that as you get skinnier, you need to double up the serving so the arrow will nock properly and you can pull it without slicing your fingers!

God bless.

I build 16 strand strings for all of the bows I build. Plenty tough all the way up to my 90lb bow and never have a problem. Use .026 serving and end up with the perfect size for medium to loose nock. Have not found the need to pad the loops.
