Anybody hunt in oil cloth coats? If so I have one that really smells like the oil cloth, how can I get rid of some of the smell? It is 10 years old, and for a while I was not able to wear the coat without stinking like it the rest of the day, it is not that bad anymore, but there is still a smell too it.
Thanks,
Chester

Chester, I can't imagine drawing a bow while wearing an oil cloth coat. It seems like it would be very noisey. Maybe it has softened over the years. I have no idea how to get rid of the smell. Have you hunted in it before? I would think the animal would smell you and high tail it!

A heavier oil soaked coat might cost you an animal if it's restrictive or noisy at all. Softer wool is the better option IMO.

Nope I have never hunted in, that is why I was asking if anybody else had tried, so I could learn from their "mistakes", not sure about drawing in one. Since it is starting to cool off in Houston is was actually in the 80s the other day I can actually think about putting on a coat.

In my avatar I shoot wearing a 10 years old Barbour.
Still stinks ;) Wouldn't hunt deer with it, but for pheasants, ducks, etc and rain: Yes
I have a wool coat for winter

I have, when it's raining hard and I'm on stand close to accomodations. (it's too heavy to pack in) I've even used one when I stalked on a turkey with my wheelie bow (can't show pic). Still smells after 10 years.

I only wear the bottoms since it is waist high weeds and multi-flora rose here. There is a waxy smell but it has not bothered deer. I have a shirt I have soaked in the oil cloth treatment I sometimes wear. That smells like wax also but does not bother deer. The secretions from your glands give you away, not the waxy odors.

I also wear the chaps from Filson and work great in tough cover. The multa-flora rose will rip you up pretty bad if not protected.

I was looking at getting some of those chaps, seems like pretty much everything in Texas has thorns, or spikes, or will take a piece of flesh from you.
