Just wondering if most of you all hunt private or public land and do you bait. I was looking at the trail cam pics thread..lots of great animals. Most of the likes I've never seen in the woods. It seems most of the pics are in heavily baited areas.
So anyway just wonderin..
-
I hunt private if I can but I find myself in public woods more often. As for baiting its illegal here so that's not an option.
I try and set up my cameras on a natural food source or a heavy run. Good luck
-
yes public, would never hunt over bait or fence.
-
Both, but mostly public. Illegal to bait here, though I probably wouldn't bait anyway.
-
Public land here. I don't bait but then I mostly still-hunt. Not sure how that would work out - suppose I could leave a trail of Twinkies or Scooby snacks or something.
-
I don't bait for hunting but do for pictures!
It's a good way to see what's around. We stop using attractants the 1st of August, a full month before season starts.
-
Private my parents farm. I do not put out bait myself, but the deer do eat the crops.
-
I'm hunting public land down here in Texas, but I hunt the family farm up in Kansas. No bait necessary...couple of hundred acres of soybeans, winter wheat, and river bottom full of acorns.
-
Private when I can, public when I have to. Bait- no.
-
GingivitisKahn ... Scooby Snacks and twinkies on the ground. Heck..I might sneak up behind ya. lol
-
Private land most of the time. No baiting allowed. I place my trail cams on travel routes/heavily used trails that I've seen deer and pig sign on. Usually I get pretty lucky with good pics of hogs...occasionally get good pics of deer.
-
I love bait. I even fish with it.
It's like 98% private land in TX so I don't do much public hunting since I got out of college and could afford a small lease.
To each his own, but I would reall really like to hunt somewhere in the midwest with the intermingled farmlands, creeks, and wood funnels.
-
I hunt public land all the time.
Baiting for bears is now illegal in Washington, but baiting for deer is still allowed...and yes, I've done it.
-
I hunt both private and public.Never tryed baiting.
-
I'm lucky enough to have private land to hunt. As far as bait, is a field of winter wehat considered bait? How bout a heavy masted white oak?
-
Used to hunt both when I lived in Jersey. Most likely I'll do the same here in Tejas...
Baiting, nothing wrong with it. I bait with food, food scents, deer scents and sounds.
-
Private this year thanks to my wifes uncle...like what was said above...alot of Texas is private, so public hunting is HARD.
I bait and dont have an issue with it (hope no one else does). To be honest, it is not nearly as easy as one might think...at least for me. I am trying to take only mature deer and this gives me the chance to compare deer, but the mature deer sure are smart.
-
both and no
-
Both-no baiting..........nothing against it either but it doesn't really work for serious spot and stalk.
-
Private 100%
-
100% public. Most good private land is either leased up or the owners are too scared of lawsuits to allow anyone to hunt it. Baiting isn't legal here. I doubt I would if it were. No reason to here.
-
90% Public/ 10% Private, no bait
-
Both and no i do not bait
-
I can only get to public land these days...it's close to home for my usualy day trips. It's not bad but the deer are pressured pretty heavily. Still, no place I'd rather be in October and November.

Another good reason not to bait - scary! :-D
-
public land
-
No Bait. Enough stuff on the ground here in Iowa anyhow. As far as Private and Public? I've hunted both. And by the way this year is going be mostly public next year. Money talks and bull dung hunts on public land. Ground getting bought up by Lakosky's and rich people from Michigan. :banghead: Where's my ticket? :goldtooth:
-
Now days I hunt public only. I always seem to have a problem hunting private land.
Although it might just be me. I never did like someone telling me how I should hunt, or what I should harvest.
Ohhhhhh and no bait!!!!!!!!
-
I hunt public land during the week. I only hunt private land on Sundays, because that's the only way it's legal, in my area.public land is always my first choice. As far as baiting goes, it's not my first choice of options, but I'll utilize this legal method to get some meat in the freezer

So I guess what I heard was true..
-
PRIVATE 80% AND PUBLIC 20%.NO BAITING HERE,NO NEED.MOST OF FARMERS SAY KILL EM ALL.SO YOU CAN BE SELECTIVE,OR THEY MAY TELL YOU TO THIN OUT THE DOES THERES TO MANY.YOU CAN USUALLY TELL WHATS OUT THERE AFTER A COUPLE OF HUNTS AS FAR AS DOES GO...CHRIS

Private and Public prefer Public for the bigger woods. Private land consist of ten acres and houses all around you can hear power tools and people, not very enjoyable. No Bait, seems every year I have at least a few chances at a deer without bait.
-
I like hunting both I think they both have good and bad to them... When I can I small game public due to there seams to be more woods to hunt.. Since we dont own a lot of Private land..
Later Guys,

I have a deer lease so mostly private hunting. I bait pretty regularly. Id doesnt mean I kill anymore than anyone else. in fact ive seen very few deer over my bait. Up until last year I hunted mostly public land & there is no baiting alowed on public land in Oklahoma.
-
Private mostly. Baiting is legal in Ohio for deer but we don't do it. Unless you consider a 200 acre cornfield baiting. :bigsmyl:
-
People who can't see a difference between an apple pile, and a fifty acre corn field, are people who hunt over apple piles. I hunt both private and public and baiting is "thankfully" illegal here in Pennsylvania.
-
I hunt in Washington on public land, we are blessed with tons of it. I have never baited, but I have shot deer traveling to a farmers salt blocks for his cattle. I was still hunting the edge of the field ( I had permission to hunt the farm land) nailed nice doe two years in a row in the same area. About 200 yards from the salt blocks.
-
In Indiana, with a few exceptions, a person is only allowed to take one buck. I do almost my entire bow hunting on public land, stalking and still-hunting for that trophy animal. I own a small hobby farm of 25 acres that I have been trying to develop into a wildlife habitat area. It does have a couple of food plots, which are legal in Indiana and I gun hunt over just to fill the freezer.
-
I am very fortunate. This is only my second season of hunting of any kind and I have 500 private acres between 4 different locations all within 10 minutes from home. No baiting in New York, but the dairy farm I hunt has a hayield that the deer really like.
-
I hunt both, no bait on either. Honestly I like public land better because you have more options for moving around.
-
i aint fussy ill hunt both :D
as for bait.. that's your call
-
I hunt mainly public lots of blm and forest service land here. But the elk unit I hunt is 80% private and can be tough. Did hunt bear over bait this year for the frist time. Deer and elk don't bait but will hunt food sources.
-
50/50 I joined a hunt club this year & the option of hunting private land is great (well, it would be if I could find any deer!)
Lots of good, relatively un-pressured public land around too, so I have a bit of both to play with.
Now all I need to do, is figure out where the deer are!
I'd bait if I could, but I can't, so I dont.
-
Luckily my family has enough land with deer on it that I hunt 90% of the time on private land. I do venture out some and hunt public the other 10%.
-
No baits all of are bucks are picked off trails.Never will see baits in our woods,Not even for our kids. Both, hunted over bait alot back in WI (when it was legal)during late season to fill doe tags. I hunt bears over bait so will hunt any other critter over bait if legal. That being said if I'm not filling doe tags I wont sit bait. lol I've never seen a 150+ hit bait during day light.
-
Good luck on that one...geesshh
-
Hes allready dead look at my avatar.
-
100% private. Gave up hunting public in Florida many years ago. Actually gave up hunting completely becuase of all the idgets on public land. Even after walking 5 miles back in I was still being stepped on.
Now I own 20 acres surounded by hundreds of acres. I do bait.More to compete with the surounding lands owners but rarely hunt over the bait except for hogs.Try and find the trails in and out although, admitadley I set the feeders on trails that were there already..
My plan is to keep slinging arrows after the guns start firing here in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the deer will find my little 20 acres as a refuge.
-
99% public 1% private. Only bait I carry is some sandwiches that brings my son back to the truck.
-
Wyoming is at least half public land as are many western states, so that's usually where I hunt. I do have a cache or two of private land I utilize though. Baiting for deer, never thought of doing that, thought it is illegal. I know a few that bait for bear.
-
I used to hunt only private. lost that due to a death in the family that owned the land. Now I hunt mostly public.
-
Mostly Private.
Using bait is not hunting in my opinion.
That includes biolage etc.........
-
Private most of the time but do a hunt on public with family and friends once a year for a few days.
-
Both, but mostly public now. I have no complaints though.

I hunt on both, private with the guys from work. If I'm on my own, it's public land. Baiting deer is illegal in Minnesota.
