Well, in the spirit of Tradgang generosity and Christmas, I'd like to do a simple little give away.
I make my own leather dressing jokingly called "Bulla-Bulla Boot Butter" when I have to call it something. It is a home made blend of beeswax, deer tallow and a couple other ingredients. Lightly pine scented in a rather blatant attempt to copy Montanna Pitch Blend.
The end result is something a lot like Mink Oil but with just a hint of pine scent. I don't use scent oils, rather I just steep it with some pieces of Christmas tree clippings like tea to take on some of the scent. This batch has some douglas fir and balsam fir scent.
I have two small tupperware tubs about 4"X4" and about 2" deep and will draw two winners on this coming Tuesday, December 7th.
FYI, I've been making it for a couple years and have given away some tubs of it at MOJAM in the past. People seem to like it but maybe they are just being polite.... I don't claim it to be some new super leather water proofing though it does help as well as anything else I've used. Where it seems to really shine is rejuvenating dry leather or softening leather that has been used hard and put away wet. I've uses it on my leather boots, work gloves, quivers, the kids football, old deer antlers, chapped hands and all sorts of places.
Let me know if you are interested.

Dave,
I have some MT Pitch and this harder stuff Australian Boot Dressing (?) which I like better. The Mink Oil seems to soften stuff to the point where it looses shape of it's original design...and stretches.
Sounds like your concoction would be good w/out the mink oil. Rendered deer fat, eh? I've heard of using bear fat... and groundhog... apparently, rendered ground hog fat smells just like Vitamin E. Mentioning that to some biologist and he commented that since woodchucks eat and fatten on lush greens, their fat would be chuck (pun intended) full of Vit E. ;)
Neat idea to mix up your own. I won't cut in on the contest since I have the other 2 tins...but wanted to applaud your creativity and generosity.

Dave, Very generous. You do not need to add me to the list, but thought you might like to know an interesting tidbit on the term Bulla-Bulla. It is a term that is used by Navy fighter pilots when they score a direct hit with a missile on a target drone. Normal wartime shot missiles have an expanding rod warhead and knock down an enemy aircraft with that blast vice a direct hit. Most of those "practice" shots are with non warhead missiles, so getting a direct hit is quite an accomplishment.

Hey Dave,

Beeswax and deer tallow, huh? Would it work as a string wax? Please add me, too. Thanks,
Fred.....
-
Fubar,
When I first attempted to make "something" out of my rendered fat, I was going for that type of product. I wanted a string wax / bow wax / boot wax type thing but it didn't really work out. If it is stiff enough or waxy enough for string wax or bow wood protection, it's generally far too stiff to use on leather. I thought a while and came up with the idea to use my "secret ingredient" which is another very old time product and it worked great. I can vary the ratio and get different consistencies but have settled on something that is real good for all around use. It is pretty stiff as it sets up in the tubs but like shoe polish, once you "mush" into it, it's pretty creamy. I'd describe it as being harder than room temperature Mink Oil, about the same as shoe polish but it feels different once you mush into it.
As for using it on strings, I really don't know how good of an idea that would be since it has animal fat. I don't THINK there would be any problem but I just don't know.

Count me in Dave. I pulled out my Danner Frontiers the other day to give them their annual treatment prior to our cold weather tournaments. I discovered the Danner boot dressing that I bought (and paid too much for) had cracked/dried/shriveled up to nothing. Got a deal on the boots though. 1/2 off in July a few years back. I guess the sporting goods store figured out that 1000 grams of thinsulate wasn't going to be a big seller on the 4th.
-
Hey Dave put me in, sounds like something I could use. Thanks..
-
Wow!!!
About 60 entries already! That's pretty cool.
I kinda figured there wouldn't be much interest in something like this.
I would ask one favor. Who ever wins, let me know what you think of it.
Also, don't expect nearly as much pine scent as the Montana Pitch Blend. There is just a hint of it that sort of adds a "freshness" to it.
-
Put me in please. Thanks, Duane

I'm interested.

Got distracted. It started snowing about an hour ago and was really coming down. I was counting down the time till 8:00pm but around five till, we got the bright idea to all go for a walk in the snow. We just got back a minute ago.
We live in town but there is a block of woods about a 1/4 mile away where my kids like to go so I got them all bundled up in their winter camo and grabbed the toboggan and off we went.
Anyway, I expect you'd all like to know if ya won or not????
AND
THE
WINNERS

Hey Roy, guess what?
I just happened to look in the freezer out in the garage and I've got a big bowl of it out there that's been frozen for a year or two. Forgot all about it.
As soon as I get a chance I'll bring it in and see if it's still good. I don't see why it wouldn't be.
-
Well, at least I think that's what is in that bowl... could be almost anything. Our freezer isn't frost free so things get a bit of ice on 'em if they're left in there for a long time. Especially when one of the kids goes looking for Popsicles and forgets to close the door all the way.
I'll let you know.
-
Thanks for the chance, Dave, and congrats to the winners.
Ron
-
Yeah, Very cool! Thanks! Will definately get allot of use down here in the swamps!
THANKS!
Brad
email sent as well

-
Thanks Dave sounds like ya have a nice thing there I'd be pleased to have you enter me Thank you
-
Thanks Dave for the fun and the info. Rendered fat is not the same as regular fat so it might work on a string...as long as the dog ain't too close...
Fred...
-
Congrats guys! Thanks for the opportunity, Dave.
-
Well, the two tubs of Boot Butter went out about an hour ago. Sent priority mail, parcel. Supposed to take 3 days so about Saturday or Monday at the latest.
-
Thanks Dave! Can't wait to tell the postmistress that the package is Bulla Bulla Boot Butter. The look on her face should be priceless! LOL
Brad
-
Well, I expect that the tubs should arrive today if they didn't already get there Saturday.
Give me a holler if they show up.
-
Please put my name in. I could definitely use it for my LL bean boots
-
HI Dave,

Man you should be selling this stuff! These boots are used and abused daily. I work for the state DOT and hot asphalt and cement are a daily occurance. 10 minutes with a brush and your boot butter and they look better than new!
Thanks much!
Brad
-
Sure, add me to your list. Always willing to try inovations form the minds of fellow outdoorsmen.
-
Thanks for the generocity Dave!
-
Looks good Brad!
Looks like you did it right and pulled the laces and got the tongue real good. That makes a world of difference! They should be softer and more comfortable too.
I apologize about the label.... it was supposed to be sort of olive drab with yellow letters but our printer is fubar and the color printing doesn't work right. It was a spur of the moment semi-joke label anyway but oh well....
Like I said in the letter, try it on some other stuff too. I use it on my antlers to keep them from drying out, the kids football, their baseball gloves, work belts, my back quiver or whatever. Even on dry chapped hands.
