Thinking about getting one, wondered if anyone could tell me about them.
-
Well made, warm and about the same weight as my L. L. Bean washable wool shirts. The only issue I have with a pull over (not specific tho the Asbell shirts)m is that there is no way to vent when you get too hot hiking in, etc. since you are not able to open the front of the shirt as you can one with buttons, zipper, etc. These shirts are a great value. I especially am interested in the new ones with the removable cape/hood.

I bought one a while back and I can't speak highly enough about it. Top quality, fits well, and helps me be "more traditional" at the same time.
I ordered it and it came super fast too. Can't go wrong IMO and G. Fred is a sponsor here too!

They must have just put them back on the website because they were not there a few days ago. They are a real pleasure to deal with - very fast. Pick up a knife with your order they are very nice as well.

I got one last summer at ATAR and I love it. very comfortable and warm and worth every penny.
-
I just ordered one.

I got mine a few years ago at the WV expo. I like it alot. I usually carry it in and put it on on the stand.
-
They look very nice, what sizes worked for you guys?
-
Just ordered one. Can't wait to try it out.

I have been looking hard at the "new" Mackinaw....anyone have one yet?
Not to be too dumb but what exactly is this? Lining or an over layer you pull over the pullover?
-
jcar315, i had just e-mail Ms. Asbell that same question yesterday, the Mackinaw is a hood and shoulder layer of wool it has the armhole and extends down just past your arm pits.
-
jcar315,
It is an extra layer. You have a regular shirt, with a hooded Mackinaw that covers your shoulders as an extra layer when needed. It's easier to get into and out of than a vest over the shirt. (But the vests are nice all on their own.)
I can't wait to get mine and try it out.

Call Teresa Asbell and talk about your size. She makes every shirt.
I could not be happier with mine. Superb quality.
-
I bought an Asbell hooded vest in September and have used it almost every time I have hunted since. Very happy with the product. Think I'll place an order for a hooded pullover next.
-
Looks like a good deal. And good prices on those knives, too.
-
Thanks guys,I think I'll order me and my dad a couple.
-
Perfect for layering. I don't like clothing that is tight around my neck and the Asbel pull over fits just right. The length is great to keep cold air from your lower back while sitting. The arms are cut right for shooting a bow too.
Well thought out piece of bowhunting clothing.

The hooded vest is on my list of must have clothing.

I wore one this morning in temps that started out at 15 degrees....long johns, Woolrich shirt, GFA pullover, and a wool vest and I was fine. Great product, super quality, sooooooo inexpensive for the quality of workmanship and materials. I really can't believe they sell them as cheaply as they do.

How cold does it get down there? I like the looks of that mackinaw with the hood, that would be nice with a wool sweater or army shirt.

I'm one of the biggest fans of wool for hunting out here. :readit: One of the Mackinaws in Timber Ghost is on my gotta' get list! :goldtooth:

I got one several years ago at the Kalamazoo MI show,The quality is top's and it is very warm.
-
South MS Bowhunter - It all depends on the temps' and conditions. One of the beauties of wool is that you can wear it in a wide range of temperatures.
If I lived down thataway, I would probably get the pullover with hood and cape. The hood is always handy....cold wind on the back of my neck sends me home quicker than anything...and the cape can be removed on the warmer days. By the way, the hood on mine is large enough to cover a Fedora, on purpose. Teresa said she made it that way for Fred's hat.
Anyway, with a medium weight wool pullover, you could hunt from 55 degrees down below freezing, depending on your layering. Don't forget wool pants.
55 degrees is roughly my starting point with wool.

Thanks Roger I placed and order last night to Ms. Asbell for the Buffalo plaid Mackinaw I was torn on this pattern/color or the Timber ghost. My thinking was with the amount of green we have through winter the tan and black may blend better. What do some of you think? Also Stone Knife we get some temps in the low 30 to 20 most winters but very few, average temps stay around 40's in the late winter (Dec through Feb).

I ordered a Mackinaw in the Timber Ghost. I have plenty of wool as it is, but nothing with the hood and cape. By layering with more wool under the Mackinaw, I expect to have a foul weather outfit that is hard to beat...even in North Dakota!

so is the new Mackinaw one with the take off top ACCTUALLY a shirt with a colar and the hood is attached to the extra pullover. Was a bit confused on the site if it was the "basic" shirt underneath it.
-
Bow Plinker,
The Mackinaw is the pullover and the cape combo i e-mailed Ms. Asbell last night and that was her reply.
