Title: Hunt every chance you get......
Post by: vermonster13 on December 11, 2009, 09:20:00 PM
Arranged to get most of a full day in the woods today. It was a brisk -20 up where I was. My water bottle was frozen in my quiver pocket after only 90 minutes in the woods. The 12" of snow had that thin crust on top that made every step such a joy (my fellow northern hunters no of what I speak). Tried to take some pics of ways to stay warm and the snow for a couple of other threads on here but alas it was too cold for the digital camera to work. The 40 mph gusts in every direction made playing the wind a little tough too. I loved every minute of it. You see I lost a big chunk of my hunting days this year.

Back in October I had a little virus and a flutter in my chest so my wife made me go to the doctor. Everything looked fine but my EKG was a little different than my base line so I was told I needed a stress test to be safe. So a month later on the Monday before Thanksgiving I was in the Cardiologist office having it done. My blood pressure, blood oxygen and pulse where all fine during the test as was my EKG, but they also take pictures of your heart at these thing right after than a few hours later(the Cardiologist actually asked me why I was even there after the first part of the exam). Well on Tuesday I get called into the office by the top dog who had looked at my pictures. He was very concerned. He said it looked like my heart was 30%+ damaged and asked if I had a major heart attack. Not to my knowledge and I'm pretty sure I would remember something like that and I'd been feeling fine. He wanted me to go north for an immediate heart cath, I said Doc it's hunting season how about we do this next week? He and the wife ganged up on me. So the day before Thanksgiving I was in a hospital two hours north having a heart cath. They found that the artery across my heart was 100% blocked and put two stents in. I made it home on Thanksgiving just in time for dinner.

I passed a lot of does during the early season waiting for a chance at the giant I saw this year. The doctor was glad I did, he wasn't sure I would have lived through a dragging out a deer.

So enjoy every chance you get to hunt, even if you are placed under restrictions(I'm not supposed to do any long hike ins for a little while and to get help with any drag outs). You never know which hunt will be the last so enjoy each and everyone.

Glad to hear you are doing well, that is scary stuff...my father-in-law just went through a similar ordeal.  I agree 100% with enjoying your time doing the things you love.  We have had several medical issues within the family this year and I feel these are "signposts" to take a look around and enjoy what you have and who you have to share it with.

Dave keep positive thoughts, just like archery, most of the health game is mental. You'll be back at "old times" in no time. I have a few retired golfing guys who had that done and there are back to themselves.

I was up top of Hawk Mountain in Pittsfield at the start of today Rich. Ended it in a different spot in Pittsford and a little three doe encounter. Was only a 100 yards from the truck when I ran into them.

Dave, been there done that....nothing worse than have'n a cath done and the doctor says"O look at this" to the nurse....and you can hear it. That was almost 4 years ago. Diet and daily trips to the gym have kept me going and looking forward to every day to do the things I like to do. Do what the Cardio guy says, lose a few pounds, take a walk, shoot each day and enjoy. We really would like to see you around this site for many years to come.    Take Care!!!!!

What vermonster said.
I had my pre rockie mountain stress test on aug 19TH 2009 everything went great.
Went to co. in mid sept, camped out for a week just taking in the country-short hikes and the like.
Went to the quarter circle ranch on the 20TH to start the real hunting with the Judsons.
THat morning going up the mountain chasing a bull I had a chest pain bad enough to take a nitro.this was on sunday morning ate 6 nitros sunday night, scared to go to sleep.
Next morning i tell my hunting partner Ralph Morita  i was sorry  but take me to hospital in gunnison.'thanks ralph'.
I spent 24 hours in the hospital in gunny.
Next day we packed up and made the 14 hour drive home got home in the earley am.
Checked in to the emergency room at st. johns hospital about 10:30am  was out of the heartcath about 1:30 my cardioligist says you had 2 100%
blocked and 1 80% so after two caths i have 5 stents
Doc says somebody was surrly watching over you because you were standing in line for the widow maker.
So even a stress test does not allways cut it.
Thanks for listening.
BE SAFE LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
And for goodness sake have a merry Christmas.
Ron

A reality check for sure!  I had a medical scare back in June that at first was told would be a career ender and shooting a bow might not work out.  No where close to the journey you have just taken but it made me re-think what is important and appreciate a few things I may have taken for granted.  It's ashame that at times it takes something like this to re-focus us and get life's priorities where they should be.  Glad you took the advise and things worked out for you. I'm sure Christmas will be special this year.

Glad you discovered the problem before it revealed itself in a serious way.  Now I feel bad about not going out this morning in the o wind chill.  I'll definitely make it out this afternoon.  Good luck with the rest of your season.

Great to hear you are doing well now, Dave. I went through the stress test part a few years ago, but everything turned out fine. They finally decided I had somehow pulled a muscle in my left shoulder area...still don't know how. It was scary though. I had many of the symptoms of a heart attack. When the nitro tablets didn't seem to help, the doc said, "That's a good sign." What a relief.

Sorry to hear you didn't get off so lucky, but I'm sure glad you caught it in time. Reading a post about you being found dead in the woods holding onto a deer drag is NOT what we want to do. Hopefully they got you fixed up, and you will be able to hunt for many years to come.

Dave,
Good to know you have come through that experience OK. I lost my brother a few months back to an undiscovered heart condition. He had some chest pain and was gone in a couple of minutes. You have had a lucky break, and your story might inspire a few fellow tradgangers to get a check up -- it may be just the nudge a few guys need to get to the doctor.
Thanks so much for sharing your story.
Joe

Dave, glad to hear it worked out, and that you're doing well.

As far as your advice of getting out when and as much as you can, I can relate.  After being diagnosed with cancer and going through 8 months of chemo I realized I had put somethings off, like bowhunting, because I had plenty of time.  Well, the cancer made me rethink my priorities and realize the importance of seizing opportunities to do those things I had put off.

David,

Doesn't suprise me...you've been given away bits of your heart for all the years I've been on this site...

You, Sir, are a person among many trad gang members I'd like to meet and shake hands and buy dinner.

Scary to hear, with my dad's family heart history, how stress tests don't cut the mustard...and you can still have major blockage...

With the current state of my health coverage, I couldn't afford to have tests anyway... guess I don't buy bacon, huh?  :)

Continue to mend well and pay attention to the subtle signs... indigestion often isn't from what I hear with your and my family history.

Keep them asprin handy and taken daily.

Keep the Son in your eyes, Hoss.

I belong to the same heart club.On Dec. 27/08-I had an incident right out of the blue.I am a type 2 diabetic--my wife and I were getting ready to go out and I started to get very warm--then started to sweat-then sweat buckets--then it looked like I went swimming in my clothes.
911 here we come.At hospital I got the super Drano drug[clot buster]--then transport to Heart Institute 35 miles away.Had the catheter--Then was told 4 blockages 3 between-90-95 % and the 4th. not as bad[whatever that meant].Immediately had 2 stents put in--I could breath better--then 2 days later had the 3rd. one done---did not do no.4 as it was at end of artery. Said not critical---
Amazing surgery-- went through my wrist--boy it is a funny feeling lying there awake knowing that a doctor is working in your heart.
Here we are 1 year later--I am in better shape now--than I have been for a while-------
There was no pain of any kind--and apparently diabetics have THEIR CARDIAC INCIDENT this way usually-----------so watch guys--right out of the blue---no warnings.I had been at my regular DRS.2 weeks before and nothing showed up in tests.

Glad to hear you are o.k. Its true, life is so short. Enjoy it NOW ! My dad had a heart attack at work and I had to take him to the E.R. a few years back. He pulled through and swore he would start doing the things he wanted. Now I'm afraid he's slipped back into the stress and troubles of owning a business. I keep telling myself I won't let that happen to me.
Best wishes to you !
