.......Would you buy a new bow, or use it go on a nice hunt?
The reason I ask is that I'm blown away at how many guys here buy bow after bow after bow....instead of say, as an example.... buy a plane ticket to FL. or TX. and go hog hunting for a few days. Same $$ spent....
Is it about time off? Having another bow on your rack? I know for some it's feeding an addiction.
Is it that you're satisfied just hunting around home and lack of desire to hunt elsewhere?
I think if more guys would get together and go somewhere to actually hunt....they'd realize what they're missing out on.....
Lets talk......
-
I'd be using it for a trip to KS next fall! How bout you Curt?
I would have to agree withthe addiction of buying bows for some. I'd rather hunt, especially since our season is short and early. But to each there own.
-
I never spent 1K on a bow yet, and got a bunch...I just taked to a friend about a self guided Elk hunt in Co......for about $1000. I may be going west!! That would be much more meaningful to me than another bow.....
-
Yes sir Ryan!! Fall 2010!
-
I would enjoy some hunting away from home I`m sure. I have always wanted to go West and my Buddy Jeff Holchin keeps that alive in me. But in all honesty I hunt these South Ga. swamps ,not because I have too but because I want to. Gods country!!!
I do enjoy bow swapping and just shooting new bows but If I had a 1000 extra bucks to spend on hunting I`d try to make that Texas hunt with you fellers coming up. I know theres gonna be some blood on the dirt there.RC
-
I would buy a couple good old bears for half and use the other half to go on a decent hunt somewhere thats not over priced like maryland or something.
-
GO HUNTING with family or friends. the memories will be priceless. I'm heading to FL for a hog hunt with a couple other trad buddies on Jan 10th. bows come and bows go BUT, memories last forever.
good post Guru
-
I have never spent that much on a bow either. I only have 3. One short (48") recurve for my turkey blind, one BW that I bought recently on here, and a Zipper that I will be selling as soon as I figure out what I need for it.
I've been on several out of state hunts (Canada, Montana, Colorado)and may go on a few more before I get too old.
Long story short... my money will go toward hunts... not more bows.
-
...gotta go with a nice pig hunt somewhere....got plenty of bows and more arrows and broadheads than I can count...been hunting in three states this year, MD,PA, and OH...leaving for 2 weeks in OH in the morning...getting later in the season, time to get less picky. ...But always ready to try somewhere new....
-
Doesn't necessarily have to be $1000 fellas...that's just a number I threw out there....
-
Hunt, but some folks have the dough to do both but not me :( .
-
hmmm, that's a tough one. Put a down payment on a Yukon Moose hunt!
-
Just bought a new bow so id take it out hunting. Id go hog hunting somewhere with big toothy boars perhaps take a trip to California?
-
I'd love to chase them long legged Osceola's down in the Florida swamps.
-
I'd go with the bow. Spare $1K bills don't come easy around here. Here's my justification:
The memories from a from say, a three-day, out-of-state hunt may last a lifetime, but the tangible part lasts -- you guessed it -- three days.
That new bow will probably last a lifetime, and may even get used on a "hunt of a lifetime" someday when I have more time and money to do it... It definintly will get used around home!!!
Just too many nice bows out there I haven't owned or even shot yet! I'd love to have the money to do both, but for now, I'll keep sorting through the bows I hope to travel with after I retire.
-
Curt- If i had $1000 to blow and could do a hunt with it, I would !!!
My wife makes me sell a bow before I can buy a bow, so I'm always at the same number (which happens to be 1).
I'd like to do a mule deer or antelope hunt out west, but hunting home in Iowa is fun too!
Josh
-
I would like a new bow for myself,a $1000 can buy a nice bow.
-
Go hunt! I have more than enough bows. Seeing other parts of the world is worth any amount of money.
-
I'd put it in the bank LOL.
However, between the two I'd choose a hunt. Bows are great, but hunts are where memories are made.
-
Heck I could hunt Kauai another time in the year if I had a thousand bucks!
-
I would guess for most guys it is probably a matter of the time away being the bigger issue. They have the money but can't get away, so buy a bow instead? If it came down to a choice where I could have one or the other it for sure would be the hunting trip!
-
I would use it to help pay the bills. I cannot even imagine having that amount to consider going on a hunt. Most of us have to hunt close to home or not at all. Just not much extra out there right now!
-
Whip probably gave the best answer for me. I will spend that much next week taking my family away for a few days. I plan and budget to do that because I'd rather spend time with them (their not ready to chase big game ... yet). I've got some quite divers hunting experiences for very little cash outlay (good to have friends) so there's no "need" to pay alot. Besides some friends have put out big bucks and still got skunked. If they just wanted some memories and comraderie, we could've done that for less $$$!
I don't buy many bows anymore but they are something tangible that can bring their own memories. If they don't produce as intended, they can be sold.
-
whoops
-
I think i would hall butt to Arkansas and take my two youngest boys on their first hog hunt or let them take me on my first whitetail hunt.
-
Well, $1000 wouldn't get me there, but I'd add it to my Alaskan black bear hunt with Tom fund.
-
Careful, Curt! If you win everyone over to your viewpoint, there won't be enough bowyer sponsors to help provide for a really fine trad archery site anymore!!
Daryl
-
I'd have to say several hunts in surrounding states. Or I could just cut my throat and die rich..lol
God bless,Mudd
-
Bow buying / trading is a hard habit to break.....don't I know....classic materialism. Realistically, we shoot the arrow, not the bow and would be better off focusing on future hunts or family activities instead which bow we want to acquire next.
-
I understand both sides of the affliction, for me it's about hunting, but my schedule won't allow me to get away often. I hunt locally as much as I can because short notice works fine. Problem is, when deer season ends, that's pretty much it for me. I have no one to trad hunt with, so I turn to other aspects of the affliction to satisfy myself during the off season.
Money can dictate things, but mostly it's time. If I had some guys to trad with, I'm sure I'd find the time to grab a few hunts here and there. I just can't wonder off very far unless it's on vacation, which I have little of.
So for now I will dream, grab it when I can, and enjoy all of Traditional Archery's facets.
-
Easy one, it's a trip for me. With another move coming up in the spring, the less stuff I need to deal with the better, LOL!
-
I hear what you're sayin' Curt. I like looking at a lot of bows on here and at different events, but haven't personally been bitten with the bow bug enough to own more than a couple. The only one I shoot is a used one I got off the classifieds.
About this time last year, I determined to pick up some extra work when I could and put every spare penny toward hunting this season. I have been fortunate enough to hunt in 4 states, be on 2 St. Jude Hunts and have the pleasure of hunting with 6 different Trad Gang members. All that for $1500! That's licences and gas total. Took a little effort and discipline not to spend $ on other stuff, but well worth it in my opinion.
I can't think of a way to shoot more than one bow at a time, but I sure have figured out how to enjoy the one I have while alongside some quality folks!
To save $1000 in a year's time you only have to set back $2.74/day; $1500 is $4.11. I'm guessing most folks can handle that part. Time off is another matter, but a couple of 3 day weekends in a neighboring state can be done inexpensively and with little travel time.
-
A hunt, for sure. As a new trad hunter, but long time rifle/compound hunter, one local animal I've never taken is cougar, I would use the money to pay for a houndsman to get my cat!
-
Well if I had 1 grand I would get a New Bow and go on a Hunt.
-
My vote is for the bow, mostly because I'm satasified hunting Idaho. The time off would also be a factor, as I don't get to much, a feel guilty using it on myself rather than doing something with the family. There are hunts I want to do away from Idaho someday, but unfortunately they are going to cost a whole lot more than the cost of a new bow.
The guys I know that have a bunch of really nice, real expensive bows seem to do more traveling to hunt as well. I would guess that's more common than someone having a rack full of expensive bows but not hunting much.
-
Already got the bow on order; so that must mean I'm going for the hunt :bigsmyl:
-
$1000 wouldn't cover going to the only place I would leave Alaska to hunt.......I'd buy something nice for the wife for Yule(our mid winter gift giving holiday)......so I can continue to buy bows the rest of the year!
-
I'd go on a hog hunt to Ray's place in April!!
-
Bowhunting is my main interest and to be able to hunt is the realisation of our dreams, but the most exciting places like out West or Alaska are very expensive. So for the price of a dream hunt for Moose you can buy 10 of the most expensive custom bows, keep dreaming; you always have a resale value. We don't hunt for the killing but for the trill and the experience, but when you spend 10K in 10 days and you come back empty hands memories fade away.Said that I would like to spend more for hunting.
-
New bows are nice... as we all know.... but after just coming back from CO on a Elk hunt... thats enough buying of bows for me. I have three nice bows now after buying & selling to get what I wanted over the years.
Oh and Curt... 1K will cover your flight from LAX to Brisbane and return mate....
ak.

That really sums it up for me. Seems when I have the time, I don't have the money, and visa versa. But if it were to come down to it and I had both, YUP! it would be the hunt!

I would pick the hunt as I have more bows than five people need. As a matter a fact I could go on a combo fall turkey hunt and clean up the bucks Curt lets walk
-
I have the 2 bows I have always wanted a Bear T/D A mag and a Bear B wood riser with a few sets of limbs. I always save my $1000 each year for my 2 week hunt in the Grayling/Mio,Mi area, been doing this since the early 60's and dont plan on stopping just yet. Well my ride is here for this mornings hunt.
-
Beware the man with one bow...he probably knows how to shoot it! I have a couple sets of limbs, but I've been spending my money on hunting rather than bows for a long time. Pretty much shot the same bow for over 20 years, and I enjoy carrying it all over the country...and to a few others. The nicks, scratches, scars and spray paint are all memories. Short of dropping my bow off a mountain or something I plan on carrying it all over for the next 20 years. Heck, if I had a new, shiny bow I wouldn't know what to do with it...I'd probably be afraid of tossing it out of a tree 'cause it might get scratched or something.

Each to his own but personally I'm not into paying to hunt. Paul<><
-
For me it would be a hunt. BUT that being said I get very limited time off from work. So I would have a hard time spending that time on a hunting trip for me rather than going on vacation with my family. So I buy bows!

I took the part about paying for a hunt to mean just travel, lodging, eats ect. not that I'd be willing to buy a hunt from someone. I guess it's all in how you interpret it.
hahaha Just made me remember " It depends on what is,is?" or something to that affect...lol
-
I spent about that much this year to hunt BIG whitetails in a northern state. The license was relatively cheap at $200, no draw, we hunted public land for free, and we saw no other hunters! My group saw more big bucks than I could believe, so we will go back. Ain't sayin' where!
I can hunt whitetails out my back door, but nothing like the bruisers we saw up there! The money was mostly spent on gas, food, and lodging, expenses shared. We had a comfortable cabin to hunt from, where we could see game out the window.
Got plenty of bows and arrows.
-
Man, Curt, yer killin me.
Am I the only one who has gotten tagged by the recent years economic effects? :)
If I had the $$, I'd either go see li'l Feather, Ray, or get on one of the spring bear hunts with Quest IV. Thing is, that you have to plan on most of those some time ahead...and way things have been for way too long, I never know if I'll even have work in 3 mos, 6 mos. No use making those kinda long-range plans in that situation.
If I made a deposit, then things tanked, you'd be seeing me on here like some fellas some time back trying to sell out their hunt spot to recoup some deposit.
That and I did some of those 4 day weekend hog hunts with an ole friend in Tx..back around 9/11. The horrors of airline flights now, packing nuff gear in the tiny allowances and praying it gets there...oye! :(
Guess I'd need another bow since some guys ship ahead...but if it's "fall", I couldn't chase leaves around the back wood lots locally as I only have one bow I hunt with...
Now look at me...here I am in a tither over this when there ain't a snowball's chance in Hades this is ever gonna be a real problem...ya stinker, Guru :knothead: :bigsmyl:
-
I all ready own an awesome bow, so I don't need another one (though I wouldn't mind having another, and another...). I would use the money to hunt some place other then my home area.
-
I'm pretty set on the bow.Don't know if this counts but I've been wanting to build my own bows and would spend the 1K on tools to do so.
-
To pass the time since I ordered my $1000 Brackenbury I have been to Ray Hammonds twice, spending another $1000.
So I guess my answer to the question would be............BOTH!
The Brack should be here soon and I already have plans to return to Ray's with the new bow. :)
My wife and I worked hard, lived modestly, raised our children, and took care of things. Now it's time to do some things we put off.
-
Unless I had my eye on a particular bow for a long time, it would be spent on a hunt,it would be a do it yourself hunt in a good whitetail state, maybe a western hunt, a bear hunt in Canada or......shoot, I need more than a grand!
David
-
I have a few bows and one on the way. I definitely love bows, but I got off of my high priced local lease so I would be able to take a trip every year. This year was my first year to hunt in KS, but it won't be my last! After seeing how deer are supposed to act; compared to are "few and far between", freaked out local deer, I never knew what I was missing. I still have quite abit of local land to hunt, but I won't be spending quite as much time or money to hunt locally as I did before.
-
right now i would say im financially embarrased.but to have a $1000, i would say i would love to go on a guided or semi guided hunt for a trophy whitetail.ive spent a good amount of timein the woods over the yrs, and have never seen in person, the monsterbucks you see on tv.ive seen plenty of does, a few spikes, and at best one fork horn. right now al i can do is dream of a hunt like that.may be some day
-
I bought a pair of shrews this year. After many years of shooting second hand bows they are the first and last new bows I will probably ever buy. I would have to replace one if it ever broke but otherwise I have no need or desire to trade for anything else. So I guess I would go for the hunt every time. You are correct on the time off part. For me the price of a hunt borders on being irrelevant compared to the cost in time. I have a very limited number of days remaining on this earth and have so much to do. I keep a full plate with family, work, business projects, shop projects, horses, and hunting. I wish I knew how to get more time in a day without loosing my sleep time.
-
Load the 5th wheel and head south for a hog hunt :goldtooth:
-
A long time ago I read that Howard Hill figured he could spend a lot of money on taxidermy or go huntin with that same money. He chose to go huntin and I adopted that philosophy myself.
Not sure who'd take a whole bunch of mounted stuff or for that matter the bows I still own from years past.
Huntin costs regardless of where you go so it ain't always about payin somebody to take you huntin.
-
I dunno, I already have a couple of good bows. In my mind, a bow is a bow is a bow, so I would definately take the hunt. Gators maybe....
-
2009: bought some collectible and shootable old Bear bows - mostly 1959's. Hunted in my home state of Iowa, plus Texas, Quebec, Colorado,Wisconsin and Georgia. Did not harvest animals on all those hunts but time spent with good friends, sunrises and sun sets, with a bag of memories put up for life's late season. A $k would not help much, fit in about all I could this year.
-
I am right there with you Curt! I have more bows than time to shoot them, cant shoot a BW Or Morrison any better than my Quinn or Tradtech. Me and 5 buddies are going to Texas, Febuary, hog, javelina and varmint hunting. A $48 tag for 5 days, gas and eats is all it will cost, hunting for free on a friens Uncles deer lease, 2500 acres infested with hogs. We will be bunking in his cabin, everyone is pitching in same $ for groceries, to cook, should be a great time.
-
Out of state trips are great, especially the 1st time in new country but I think for a lot of folks the reason that they buy multiple bows is because they value them as they would fine paintings or sculpture.
Its hard to tell an art collector that they already have a VanGoh and dont need another.
-
Are you a bow HUNTER
or a BOW hunter? LOL
-
I have some great bows. I would take them on a hunt! If I draw the out of state elk tag I am hoping for this year I would welcome the $ for that trip.

out of all the hunting, i have only 2 shoulder mounts. I try keep teeth, claws, horns, skulls etc but most have been lost or given away. I dont hunt for the horns, i hunt for the hunt.
Id used the money to hunt! for sure
-
I will take the 1000 dollors and go on a 7 day diy hunt in oregon.do it now, some day you will be to old to go.
-
I'd go hunting with Curt!

Well..... Maybe I'm a little "odd"
I was born and raised here in N.Y. I've lived the majority of my 49 years right here in Dutchess Co. I have family and friends all over the state. My Mom and Dad lived in Maine for a while, and that is where my ancestors came from originaly. I used to hunt up there quite a bit years ago. However,I have done most of my hunting right here in N.Y. hunting every season of my entire life. I have never even really "wanted" to hunt anywhere else. As for bows..... I have a few old Bear recurves, and I have my Mikuta longbow. It fits my hand perfectly, and it shoots better than I do. I paid $350 for it. Unless it breaks,I really have no reason to buy another one.
If I had $1000 just sitting around collecting dust,I might take it up to Shawn's for the JLMBH and buy a bunch of raffle tickets for the kids at St.Judes.
Then again, I would probly just send it to vermonster. He can do better things with that $1000 than I ever could. :notworthy:

Great thread! Kinda like what came first the chicken or the egg??
I suppose that I am the classic trad bow-a-holic. I follow the ads here regularly, as well as **** a few times each week.
For me, trading/buying bows is kinda like having Christmas all year long! However, and I am always trying to scheme up ways to beat my wife to the front door to get the mail first! Right now I think I up to like 18 bows, and I have a couple of nice customs on the way, along with 1 Bear Grizzly; as I have recently begun trying to collect some old LH Bear bows. Yes, I guess I need some serious help.
But for me the hunt is the true essense of what really motivates me. Because, for me these tools would be useless if you couldn't shoot something else other than a target face. A nice day in the woods is just what the doctor ordered, and helps me find a sense of peace and clarity to my sometimes complicated life. I also enjoy making great memories and sharing camp with my hunting buddies, some from this great site! In order to balance my addiction and hunting endeavors, I try to pick a couple of low-budget hog hunts each year, along with one major hunt. I can usually swing this without too much "heat" from the homefront.
Behind door #3..... perhaps there is the best of both worlds where you can have your cake and eat it too? I am fortunate to have a wife who tolerates my affliction and escapades into to woods and for that I feel pretty lucky. My latest idea that I sprang on her just yesterday is to hunt the first week of bear season with Eldon Jeandreau in Maine for for 2010. I try to start planting the seeds early for my annual "BIG ADVENTURE". Then, this one special hunt, along with a couple of other smaller ones keeps me smiling. :archer:
-
Bow-a-holic here too. I like shooting arrows out of different bows. I enjoy hunting and Whitetails are my favorite and Alabama and Tennessee offer some of the best Whitetail hunting around.(Sep-Jan. 3 a day limit.)So traveling is not a priority for me. So given the choice a different bow is my choice of the two.
Let's do some buying/selling/trading!!!Christmas is days away!! LOL
PS. Even learned to shoot Right handed for the purpose of shooting a better selection of bows. NOW AIN'T THAT SICK!!!!!
By the way Chas, thanks for selling me that Bob Lee Elite that Buckster was eyeballing.Looking forward to shooting that one! LOL
-
I got bows.heck I'll be going on another hunt.
-
I'm a bow junkie to, but anymore I'm more interested hunting experiences than buying bows. Elk hunting for the 1st time next year! I also have some other hunts I'd like to do before all my youth has escaped.
-
Momma dont notice another bow but pretty sure she would figure out a Ks trip
-
I've been shooting the same bow for at least a dozen years, and it's never given me a reason to want a different one (ok, I have a few others, but they don't get shot much).
Between the two choices given, I'd go hunting. I'd have to say though, there are causes that are much better than me, such as supporting our troops or helping out the Catch-a-Dream foundation.
-
I am definately a Bow-Aholic, I appreciate fine craftsmanship and enjoy buying selling and trading. I have met some fine people here swapping bows.
With that said I also get to chase Elk every year for a couple weeks, hunt Whitetails when I can draw the tag.
If it was a choice one or the other I would pick the hunt. I will be going down to chase Hogs with Curtis in February!
-
Well if I had an extra $1000 dollars sitting around I’d be set on my string supplies so I’m not looking for the pile of cash to start piling up anytime soon.
If…(big IF)…$1 bills start to magically appear and pile up I’d like to go on a hog hunt in the south somewhere. Or I know some prime deer ground to bow hunt in Missouri…$1000 would cover the hotel/gas and open some doors for sure!
As for time, well that’s a different story all together! My wife and I are on completely opposite shifts so time is not on our side. Couple that with our young kids and I’m not getting away often. I was fortunate in that she said yes to me going bear hunting in MN this fall, I think she really wanted to go north with her family and the kids anyway so it worked out.
I’d love to go somewhere and spend $1000 dollars hunting in the process…I can think of a lot of places and animals to chase. But I can buy two bows or more for that money and I don’t have to find time to shoot them, I can do that every night when I get home from work.
Josh
-
If it is a choice between a new bow and a chance to hunt with my son Matt in Colorado again, there is no doubt- I'm going hunting with what I got.
Gary
-
A hunt. I had a $1000 bow and didn't like taking it out in the brush. Was afraid I'd scratch it.
Sold the Blacktail and got a second hand Bob Lee. Shoots the same arrows. ;)
-
I also needed some of my cash back. ;)
-
I'de invest it in improving the deer habitat on my property. Get in at least one good food plot.
-
I can't speak for everyone else but for me it's the thought of spending the $ and having the possibility of coming home empty handed. That would be hard to swallow as well as hard to explain to the spouse. At least if I buy a bow I can have something to show for the money. For us, that's a lot of money and I better have something to show for it or I'll be in the doghouse for a long long time.
My prefference however would be to go on a hunt but realisticly the smart choice would be the bow if these were my only two options. Plus the better half isn't much for the outdoors.
-
$1000 bow or go hunt.... I'm huntin!!
-
I have my bow fund and work to buy, sell and trade with that. I can have a couple bows at a time. I am still trying stuff to see what I like. If I had $1000 it would go in the bank with these times we are in. Maybe a couple nice used bows I could sell and get the money back if needed. Hunting something different or a trophy would be nice, but with my family, the economy and schedule, It would be very hard to justify traveling to hunt. Maybe some day. Right now I have 4 deer in the freezer and a buck tag. I can't get motivated to hunt in the cold when all I would be doing is hunting horns given I don't need more meet.
I do know that if I had it to do over again I would have done more traveling and hunting when I was younger and single. I wasted far too much $ on guns, general young men's fun and vehicals.
-

Amen to that brother!
-
I could take $1000.00 and do either, but I wouldn't spend that much on a bow, and I wouldn't pay for any guide service. I think it would be cool just visiting with another tradganger and hunting or just shooting stumps with them.
-
If it was truly "extra" cash, I would put it toward a moose hunt. I would go with an outfitted hunt, not guided. With money being as tight as it is right now, I would most likely do something foolinsh with it, like put it in the bank!!
I trade/buy alot of bows, but I don't take money from the "household funds" to do so. When I do an out of state hunt, I try to work overtime or pick up odd jobs (roofing, fence building, brush clearing) to pay for it. As I have hit my mid 50s, doing the extra work is a bit tougher to do as the body is showing some wear. In construction, I tend to get time off when I want it the least and end up working overtime when I would prefer to be in the woods! Always works that way for some reason.
My biggest issue is TIME. I get no pay unless I am at work...no vacation time, no paid holidays, no sick days, so when I DO plan a hunt, I need to have enough money set aside to cover the time lost from work, as well as the license and transportation costs of the hunt.
I have been blessed to have been able hunt bear and caribou in Canada a few times and if I had to limit myself to one more hunt away from home it would definitely be Moose. Mike
-
Won't say I will never buy another bow, but I am pretty set now with Widows and Treadways as well as a few old Bears. The right used Dale Dye might tempt me.
Any loose change I get and the odd dollar bill goes into a five gallon water bottle that is solely designated as a hunting fund. Once I get enough for a deposit I can usually sweet talk Mrs. Gregg Dudley into increasing my allowance to cover the rest. Love that woman!
My problem now is that there are child labor laws which prevent my 12 year old hunting partner from earning enough money to pay his own way. Stupid laws! :knothead: ;)
-
If I had a g-note I would give it to the wife to go shopping and then I could go hunt(local of course) till the money is gone and she would think I was the BOMB.would get more that a week or two of hunting from a grand...LOL
-
I have TWO thousand dollars......I think I'll buy a new PLX AND go hunting with Curtis....

I like to buy and trade bows too...I love to hunt with different bows and setups also...
In my eyes each bow holds some character to it, either from the bowyer or from the person I got it from, even one of yours, Curt, I love that little bow for how it shoots but I also know I have shared in its mojo with you on the journey as I have hunted with it...
I am blessed to have plenty of Good Texas land to hunt for free, and I like to hunt close to home...So if I had $1000, it would be all about a bow...
-
From a guy that has never hunted anywhere other than closes to home or never had a high end bow. Boy I think that I would be able to do both. I have always had to do things the cheap way, I make do will a little and do a lot. Lately making a bow has been real appealing to me. I could buy some bow making supplies and be able to buy an out of state tag somewhere. It may seem wierd to some of you but a whitetail hunt is an exotic hunt to a Utah boy. A tank of gas and some potatoes and veggies from the garden. Meat from the frezzer and I am good as gold. :campfire:
-
I'm spending 1k on stika gear, then a little over 1k on camera gear then hoping I draw some good tags! Might toss a hog hunt or 2 in, finally caught up on bills and the house work!

Chek mate Hunter II and two day bear hunt
-
I've been thinking the same thing here lately. I've bought a couple Morrisons the last 2 years and now a MOAB. It's time to start killing some things! Starting next year I have a 3 year plan going. I'm planning a moose hunt, bear hunt, and elk hunt in no particular order. Can't wait!!!
-
If I had all the money in the world I'd buy Montana.
-
Joe or Hanna?
I don't hunt so I enjoy trying out different bows. Or maybe a camera. I hunt with my camera.

Love that pic Greg. But then I'm a sucker for elk.
-
Im new to trad archery so i went a little wild and ordered several custom bows in that price range. From now on i plan on going on some more paid out of state hunts. I just went through a divorce that was costly so i have had to slow down on my spending. When i get back on my feet there are still some bows i would like to get, man i just love all these different bows.
-
I'd do the same thing that i've been doing for the last 23 years, pack my 1 bow and head for my cabin in West Virginia for two weeks. Great deer ,bear , turkey and grouse hunting with my sons and a couple of good friends. I have no desire to buy another bow, my Acadian Woods Recurve gets me a few critters every year
I also have no desire to hunt elsewhere,Why?? I'm already in heaven!!!!

"I can't speak for everyone else but for me it's the thought of spending the $ and having the possibility of coming home empty handed. That would be hard to swallow as well as hard to explain to the spouse. At least if I buy a bow I can have something to show for the money."
I thought so too, until I did it. I've been to several states hunting hogs, been to Canada on a moose hunt, been to NM and CO elk hunting....I haven't killed many animlas on these trips, but I have experiences and memories that money can't buy and time spent with fellow archers and hunters that I wouldn't have gotten any other way. Those are worth more than any bow.
-
$1000 free money(OH BOY)I'm having a hard time thinking about it.I am a member of bowaholics but the thought of someplace warm right now chasing varmints would be very appealing.
-
You can't put a price on memories made. Everyone needs to take a hunting or fishing trip and hang out with your buddies. I don't want to be sitting around one day talking about what I should have done I want to do it now. That being said I enjoy bow shoots in the off season just as much as hunting. Me and my freinds usually make a day of it with the big boy breakfast and conversation. I also enjoy buying and trading bows. The bottom line is live life while you can. I'm planning a moose hunt and fishing trip with my brother-in-law now. Sometime in the next 3 years. I'll put my thousand dollars towards that!

HATCHASER, right on! I find myself hunting less and less at home, where I can walk outside straight into the woods, but I cherish each hunt I make with my friends. As we age, the camaraderie and shared experiences become much more important than the kills. I've been hunting with the same two guys, who live in different states from me, for about 30 years. The memories I can share with my friends are what keep me going. We've hunted several states together, and we have rarely killed anything on any of those hunts, but I wouldn't change a thing. Well, except maybe to convert a miss or two to hits! :)
We've had more fun in the process than any three people have a right to do.
-
Got all the bows I need for now and I've never hunted anything more than an hour drive away so I'd rather take the $ and put it towards a hog hunt somewhere warm during the winter.Never hunted them but looks and sounds like fun and I like pork.Someday!
-
Hunt.
-
I' put up the payment for a Centaur :)
To bad on the One Year Wait!
-
Kurt- A boar hunt sounds like fun, but I think that a good way to spend the money is on the once a year bunny hunt. With all these guys responding, we can double the money we raised last year for St. Jude's at the bunny hunt. I am in either way. :notworthy:
-
$1000 will just about pay for my 2 week bear/blacktail hunt to POW this September. $650 for the air charter and the rest for tags. My flight from Detroit to Ketchikan cost $30.
I've got a new TallTines coming in another month or so...thank goodness Brian hasn't started pricing them for what they are really worth YET!
-
i'd buy heaps and heaps of stumping and rabbit arrows ... !!!
-
There's a lot of pigs hoping you blokes don't get your hands on an extra thousand bucks!
-
I had the same thoughts too Ben!
-
I just sold a rifle, and the money is going into a 'hunting trip' account. I have more bows than I can shoot at one time now, and although I am tempted to get some more bows from time to time, I will be spending on hunting jaunts instead. Hogs or a buffalo is my short list.
-
Here's the way I look at it. While $1000 bows are nice to look at and shoot, I don't really NEED one, or a rack full of said bows. Collecting bows is kind of like collecting guns, one of each caliber or style for a particular reason. In reality, in the way a guy could buy a Remington 30-06 and hunt the world, a guy could buy a 55# Bear Montana (or something in the same class) and hunt the world, no other tool needed. Since you don't get a bank account or "man room" when you die, ie. you don't get to take it with you, I'd rather spend the money making memories with my friends and family hunting somewhere different. As I get older, "stuff" is getting less important to me, I've got more toys than I need, but the memory banks have plenty of room!
-
Yeah, I,d be going to the woods. I go out of state hunting every year, sometimes twice. I do it the cheap way, though. I go for a week and I spend just over $400 including tags. Maybe i'd go on two trips. :bigsmyl:

I have found my bows that I am happy with and I am one of those fellas that dont want alot of bows, simply because I like to get "comfortable" with my equipment. That way I can concentrate on my shooting, and not worry about the different feel of a different bow.
I would rather take a hunting trip with that $1000.00 . Its always been my dream of mine to take my 13 year old daughter Ashley with me, and experience a hunt. I dont care if its for pigs, deer, bear or whatever. That time would be cherished by me and the memories would last till I take my last breath..
-
With $1000, I'd buy more tools and materials, make more bows, Sell some of the bows, go on the hunting trip, then I'd still have the tools to build more bows. Right Wingnut?

Everyone beats to a different drum.
I would rather spend money on a trip, that makes me happy.
Some people by nature love to buy, collect or dream, thank God we are not all the same.
-
I'd get some arra fixins with a little bit, then go on a couple of hunts back home, but nothing crazy. Give the last couple away or get some kid stuff with it.
-
Like Biggie I also have $2,000. I think I'll go on TWO hunting trips however! (Wished they only cost $1,000 each!)
-
I am blessed that my wife and 3 sons all enjoy archery, hunting and exploring nature with me, so I would use the money to take us on a road trip to see new places here in the Rockies and to chase a few rabbits and grouse along the way.
-
Curt,
For me it is about the time off from work, and the cost for me to travel anywhere to hunt.I only get to go off island once per year so I make it worth my while and try to get at least two hunts in during that time. This year I did Solana ranch and Brush Country. It costs me at least $1600 in airfare to get to Texas and another $1000 to rent a car plus what ever the hunts cost, this year was a total of $1800 for the hunts plus $330 for my lic. Total cost $4730. So I have to save all year for my trip, the buying of bows is secondary, but yeah, I have plenty of bows and if I could just stop buying I could afford another hunt while I am home. I think I am pretty much done now on the buying thing as I have the bows that fit me. But it is all good.

I'd definitely head out of state somewhere maybe go visit Ray at Hog Heaven Twice!! Skippy
-
For me the bow is not the objective, the hunt is. The bow is just a tool that I use to meet my objective, just like my truck. I'd rather spend the money on a hunt, or several tags, then buying bows. If I had a bow I shot well with and met my needs that step is checked off in my mind and I move on to other needs. But that's just my nature.
-
$1,000.00...? A new longbow (Bear Montana), 2 dozen arrows, broadheads and a self guided wild boar hunt down south.
-
I'd head out to Montana on a antelope hunt. I've always wanted to do this and after some research figured I could for about $1500 or so for a couple weeks if I rough it.. I like the bows I have right now so i'm just shooting/hunting with what I have.. but we'll see how long that lasts. :-)
-
I would be chasing elk in a heartbeat. No question.
-
I would either go on an elk hunt or black bear hunt with my dad. I'm very satisfied with my TallTines so I'm not really looking for a new bow.
-
in my humble opinion.. most people say they'd spend the $$$ on a hunt w/ family and friends and i agree that is the way to best spend any $$$$. BUT..
human nature being what it is and seeing how many bows people buy/sell/trade on this (and other sites, me included) i'd say the reality is most people buy the bow..
