Title: NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!!!!
Post by: stickhunter 81 on December 18, 2009, 12:29:00 PM
I could really use some help trying to figure out a way to release the string with this hand. Not using a mechanical release. Maybe a special glove with a small hook sewn in or?? (http://i831.photobucket.com/albums/zz239/jcbelliott/utf-8BSU1HMDAwNjEuanBn.jpg)?????

is that picture the right size tried to do it in photobucket??

I would go for the glove with the hook. I bet you can find a way to make it work if you will experiment with it and give yourself some time to learn how to use it.

cant see a pic from my computer at work but could you use a piece of parachute cord around your writs and leave the tag end around your finger and use a string loop like on a wheelie bow and slip the string through that and hold the tag.it should release smooth.or do it without the string loop and do a double nock set below your arrow.

I have a padded wrist strap off of the mechanical release I used now, guess I could try some parachute cord on it

The force of the string moving forward will fling the cord away.I would place a nock point under your arrow nock and then another 1/4 " below that for the cord to ride in.

maybe a heavy leather glove with a small brass rounded over nub sticking out of the side toward the thumb so you could hold a string loop on it and it would slide off easily when you slid your thumb off of it like a string release without the release. just a thought ?? God Bless and Merry Christmas.

There was an article on a guy who lost his arm and was shooting with a tab permanent mounted on the string with a mouthpiece on it.and used his teeth to hold and release.anything can be done with a little help from your friends!

Hey Stickhunter

I can get you incontact with a leather guy I know. He makes shoes for medical needs and all sorts of things. I bet if you e-mailed him the picture he could come up with something. Let me know if you are interested.

I have seen that artical to. pretty insperational. I think I will try the rope and if that doesn't work maybe i can build some kind of glove. I just don't want to get DQ'd at cloverdale. And I really don't like uses a wheely bow release.

Yeah Sean I might be let me play with this for a couple days, if it doesn't work well I will give ya a hollar, thanks.

I have a traditional style release made out of deer antler you're welcome to if it will work for you. Send me your mailing address and I'll ship it to you. If it doesn't end up working for you just mail it back, if it does work.. well Merry Christmas.

Stick hunter have you thought about a thumb release?

Also Eric Bennett is around the corner from me if you would like to go that rout.

My wife works in a rehab hospital as a speech therapist.  Occupational Therapists are really good at what the call ADL's -- Activities of Daily Living.  This isn't daily living for most people, but I'd bet if you shop around you can find someone that knows enough about archery and finger releases that they could help with this.

We've got a friend who is a PT who likes to work with archers.  These are trained professionals who understand movement and have a drive to help.

Other than that, I'd second what blueline said.  Do some research on thumb rings.

I'm thinking heavy leather wrist release w/thumb trigger. The good folks above have provided names of makers who do that kind of work. I'm interested in what you decide. Good luck.

Yup…the picture’s alright. Probably some dexterity questions to be considered, but you’re still shooting and it appears there are more plausible options available. The added ticket though is satisfying whatever criteria Cloverdale or any other trad event might impose…kinda makes me think I should spend more time practicing at becoming ambidextrous with my game. I can’t recall specific restrictions, but they might be as simple as “release aids”… don’t know of any bow-hand restrictions in shooting traditional class.

Best of luck, Rick.

Jacob, Do you have much strength and flexibility with the thumb on that hand?

I was thinking if you did, maybe something like a thumb ring release could be made. It would have to be connected to a wriststrap or glove instead of the index finger.

Possibly a leather strap with a thicker piece on the end to let your thumb slip off of like Earl Jeff suggested.

Thanks Mudd. Blueline I was looking at thumb rings a few minutes ago but it doesn't look like it will work with what I have. Marvin I have a sister that is a speech patholagist, I might check with her. Straitera I don't think I can use anything mechanical with a trigger, thanks anyway.

Kevin that might work, plenty of strength in them. I just don't think I could use one the way they showed pictures on the internet.

If you can still bend your thumb, i might suggest you use a slightly modified leather glove and sew in an insert plate
with a cylinder tube, resting on the inner side of your middlefinger knuckle. Wrap the cylinder in leather to make it more comfy,
and better for string on release.

Then you just slide the string between your hand and the cylinder, grip with the thumb, and release by easing up on the thumb pressure.

To me, it sounds as if it should get a smooth and stable release that way, and be fairly comfortable for your hand.
Sort of a reverse thumbring.

I composed a small drawing to better explain.
plate on the inside of leather, cylinder sticking out

Sorry if the idea is rubbish, but i have never thought of this before..

In any case good luck  :)

try a thumb ring, it just might work and is trad also.

A thumb ring would require an "opposite" handed bow, to shoot off the Left side of bow for a right handed shooter. I have seen some guy's use a loop added to the bow string so they can use the thumb ring on a "normal" handed bow(right hand for right hand). The first thing I thought of was an antler release that MUDD described, I would give that a try(nice offer MUDD,hope you are felling well).

I would think you could get some kind of custom modified thumbring made? If it can be done with a stickbow, someone here will know what to do and be willing to help.

I have a good friend that lost some fingers in an auto accident and he just made the switch to left handed. That would be the easiest and most logical solution unless the other hand is damaged also.

I sent a picture to your e-mail so you can get a better idea of how it works. I have a strong hunch with a short learning curve you could master it. Shoot I even got to where I could use it without it going off before I was ready..lol
God bless,Mudd

Would someone be willing to allow me to e-mail them a copy to be re-sized and posted. There might be others interested in seeing a traditional release. It certainly works and isn't in any way mechanical. If it had moving parts I'd most likely be lost when it came to making it work...lol

Looks like it could work if someone can show me how to use it. I haven't ever seen one of these before.

Wish I had a idea for You Stickhunter. Don't get discouraged if the first couple of "gadgets" don't work out.

I have a Uncle who lost an arm in a construction accident in the early 70's. He has made more devices than You can shake a stick at to aid him in his every day life. Gun holders, bow holders and so on. Like He says some of them work some don't but He keeps trying til it does work. GOOD LUCK

Jacob.  A long time ago I saw a type of release that  was not "mechanical" but may help you.

It needs to be refined in terms of my description but .. if you took a 3/4 inch leather strap, as in a relatively thin belt and wrap it around your wrist, maybe have a way to tie or clamp it together on the inside to keep it in place.

You should have two ends.  Cut them long enough so that you can take the end located inside, as in, towards the bow around the string just below the arrow.  It should overlap the string by maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

Then wrap the outer strap around that one and pinch that between thumb and forefinger or other part of your hand.  Its length is dictated by whatever length is needed to acheive that.

By wrapping both sides around the string, it takes a ton of pressure off the thumb. .  don't need a lot of strength.

You can anchor similar to a regular release or face anchor  and then just stop squeezing the strap.

Also, this predates compounds and normally thought of "mechanical releases" so it is still "trad" if that bothers you.

I can describe better or draw a pic if you want more info.  PM me if that is the case.

Not sure if this will work because I don't know exactly how they work, but what about a Turkish thumb ring?

Mudd. . try this.

I used a piece of 1" woven strapping for an example.. and it may work fine.

I started with a piece about 20" long.  I cut a 3/4" slit in the center about 8" from one end, using a sharp (single bevel) wood chisel and a bit of effort.  Tuck the longer end thru the hole.    (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/BiteMyButtski/release/001.jpg)

Then I put that on my wrist such that the part that went thru the hole is on the inside, toward my body.   (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/BiteMyButtski/release/002.jpg)

Then I pulled the pieces to extend them.  Wrap the inside piece around the bow string and let it overlap about 3/4"     (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/BiteMyButtski/release/003.jpg)

Hard to see here but the wrap is from the inside toward the outside. (Bow side to outside)

Then wrap the other end the other way, right over the first wrap    (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/BiteMyButtski/release/004.jpg)

Fold it down and pinch with thumb and forefinger or however you need to do it to make it work.    (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/BiteMyButtski/release/005.jpg)

I took pix so that you can see what I did, but they are pretty generic.  You have to make it fit yourself.  You can draw back quite a bit of poundage this way as long as there are two wraps.

The piece I had for the second wrap is too long.  That needs to be adjusted shorter, to fit your needs, but it shows the gist.

Release by just not squeezing.

I don't know what capabilities Jacob (or others) have with his hand so I am only guessing that this will work for him.  It does work though and is easy to make.

Chuck, I'm not sure that he could use that with only part of a thumb and no other digit within easy reach to pinch things together.

Jake, can you touch your thumb and finger together?  If so, how strong?  If not, how hard can you pinch between your thumb and knuckle?

I've got a bit of an idea but need more info.

Far rider That Turkish ring is that a bondage device as well...LOL
Title: Re: NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!!!!
Post by: ChuckC on December 20, 2009, 10:15:00 AM
Dave..It doesn't take a whole lot of pressure or strength to pinch the end and hold it with the double overlap.  Again I don't know Jacob's capabilities with pinching and holding.

The good thing it is is pretty easy and inexpensive to prototype.  Getting it down to a finished, correct length product will be a little more work.  Maybe others here can use the idea as well.  Just an idea from the past.

I am certain I saw this in use before the early-mid 70's (influx of compounds) and that this could be considered "traditional" to those that may worry about that sort of thing.
