No pop up blinds please. Let's see some pics of deer taken from the ground, this season, from either all natural brush blinds or by spot and stalk.
Here's one I got lucky on and everything just fell into place. Spot and stalk across an open campground(WMA) in blue jeans and a T-shirt. :biglaugh: 15 yard shot.

Here's one of mine. Spot and stalk from the porch of the camp through an overgrown field, on hands and knees. He bedded in some cedars and the wind was right, plus it covered my noise. Ended up with a 5yd shot.

Posted this guy earlier, but here is another view, without the old guy (me) in the picture. Still hunting, 20 yard shot, 50 yard recovery. My avatar has the same deer.

I've taken my last four from the ground, the last two I was simply standing by a tree. Here's the last one.

I'd post the picture but I missed a 15 yard chip shot the other day. I was already butchering the deer in my mind and forgot to pick a spot!!!
-
Way ta go guys! I came soooo.. close a number of times this year but there is always something that goes haywire.

Atta' boys, nice goin'. What are those brown things sticking up between their ears? We don't seem to have any deer like that where I hunt. (First time I've ever hunted October AND November and never saw even ONE fresh scrape or rub. It's like the bucks were all watching football...probably where I should have been, lol)
-
Tony,
I had to drive all the way to Virginia to find a buck dumb enough to let me sneak up on him, LOL.

Posted this back in October and still smilin' about it today. I was standing next to a cherry tree alongside a standing beanfield with nothing but fresh Illinois air between us. Exciting to say the least!
-
Spot and stalk here. It was warm and we needed to get her processed, so this had to be an action shot...

Kevin dude, I saw that Virginia buck of yours. Now aren't you ashamed of bringing a 'porch buck' back home to Maine? I mean c'mon...5 yards? My arrows are longer than that. And in his bed to boot? You could've at least woken him up before shootin' the poor thing! :biglaugh:
What we need up here in Maine is a bunch of those standing bean fields like the Illinois fellas have. Gonna' hafta' order some standing bean seeds this year for sure... :)

I truly enjoy hunting from the ground but always feel like the proverbial sore thumb. Can't seem to close the deal, always getting busted and it is very frustrating. I know the kill is not the main reason I hunt, but it is near the top of the list and I really like venison. Got a new spot that I just found a couple days ago that is very thick with little to no trees, so will spend some more time on the ground, hoping to find a deer that is blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.
-
Naww Tony, if I could have talked him into it, I woulda left the tailgate down on the truck and let him climb in before I shot, LOL. I had just spent 3 days chasing on old, dry doe that had more lives than all three of the kid's cats put together. I got at least two shots a day on her and had everything possible go wrong, including a string breaking at half draw. I figured the deer spirits owed me one by the time he came along.

My wife laughs at me because I walk a mile to climb a tree. She sits a hundred yards from the house and shoots them off the ground.

got this little 4 pt hunting the ground in a natural blind by Del Rio TX. this Dec had a little snow that day and in the low 20s at night, that is not the weather that we are use of hunting in TEXAS. this FED. land will not let u feed, so I was on a rub/scrap line. Stalked in standing corn during a windstorm Oct. 2 this past season. Shot at 10 yards. Coyotes got to him overnight, but still an intense and satisfying hunt. Was able to salvage some of meat.
In this photo, I'm standing where buck was, and camera is where I was when the shot was made just before end of legal time.

Four days later, posted up in standing corn and got this doe as she entered the field about 10 yards away.

And then Oct. 21 took this deer while still hunting through a big CRP field at about 20 yards.

At 25 yards while hidden within the branches of a fallen beach tree. I had a herd of approximately 20-25 does around me. Popped up, made the shot with the longbow and hardly any of them noticed. She dropped 20 yards later.
-
Got this one on a rainy day stillhunt that turned into an 80 yd stalk. Got in for a 15-16 yd shot. Osage English longbow, low 70#'s probably at my hunting draw, 675 grn ash arrow shot off the knuckle.

I now only hunt "natural, on the ground". I gave up on treestands 2 years ago. I use a mix of pines, oak branches and beech branches for stick blinds because they hold the leaves best after being cut. I shot a buck and a doe this year. Both at 15 yards.
Although I have no pics. Didn't bother. I also missed what would have been best Michigan buck, a very nice 8pt. I grunted him in, he came in on a charge but busted me as I put my hand on the string. Frankly I got excited and moved a little too much too fast. Kind of a "holy @&*@" moment. But when he spotted me, he got nervous and turned before he was going to bolt and gave me a full broadside at 27 paces, which I do practice at. But in the heat of the moment, I misjudged the distance and shot about a foot under his lungs.
I'm done hunting out of treestands.
-
congrats to all that got one from the ground that is the hardest and most exciting way to get one. Widow
-
Well-done on some fine achievements, fellows!

Great pics guys, i hunted from the ground this year, no pop up blinds just on the ground with a little cover. I have never had deer so close to me then I did while on the ground. And seen the largest buck I have ever seen in person, live, in Michigan woods his year, a real tall and wide 8 or better. Watched him rubbing a tree for about 30 min. about 40 yards away, could only see his face and rack. Then watched him walk away. He never knew I was there. Also had a Doe face to face with me at about 3 yards, never did get a shot.
-
I have never shot a deer off the ground. I have had a few opportunities over the years but they never pan out. Congratulations to all of the ground hunters!!! :wavey:
-
I think it's time for me to buck-up and hunt from the ground. You guys proved it's possible.
Old habits are hard to break however.
-
My humble advice is, if you hunt in a very heavy pressured area like the central NLP of Michigan, you better build a birds nest around you with great background cover. That's why pines work so well.
What you can get away with in a mile section with 2-5 bowhunters on bigger private parcels vs a section with 15-30 bowhunters revolving in and out with a mix of small private and public land is night and day.
There is no room to overlook any detail with intensely pressured whitetails. While I know many can kill deer from the ground in plaid with lighter cover, at least in my area, which happens to be the heaviest hunted county in the heaviest bowhunted state, I suggest you have head to toe good camo, with facemask and gloves covering hands. IMO, ASAT and Predator are best for hunting intensely pressured whitetails from the ground. But it does depend on your area. About 50% of the land around me is heavily hunted public land. My area fawns are more spooky than some bucks I've seen in other area's. LOL

I got my 1st deer of my life this season.......did it with a longbow from a tree.....a small buttonbuck..... but I have a STRONG desire to improve my skills on the ground. A couple of weeks after my first taste of success, I was on the ground, and had an awesome game of cat and mouse with a doe..I was kneeling down, bent over a fall down tree, trying to blend in as she approached.......after about 2-3 minutes of her walking around trying to deke me into moving, she walked past a tree and gave me the opportunity to squat up fast and get into to shooting position....as she cleared the tree my arrow was already pointing right at her....well, right toward her anyway....as my adrenaline reached a height it hasn't reached in a long time, I took aim and shot....but in all the excitement, I forgot to pick a hair spot, and merely shot at the silhouette.....the arrow went about 3 inches over her back and stuck into a tree directly behind her....the shot was only 10 or 12 yards away, but I missed....she still had no clue I was a human, and ran off only at a slow pace to about 25 yards....I even notched another arrow, but she slowly walked in the opposite direction, hardly scared at all.....
WOW......all you tree guys think about the thrill I'm describing....it was awesome, even in "defeat" !!!!! Yea, the ground is SURREAL......... and it's the way to go for me :)
-
Great pics guys! And some great stories.
-
I have hunted from the ground a lot over the years, had many opportunities and yet to kill a deer. I love it but at times places require tree stands. I was busted this year immediately on one property, just couldn't seem to hide enough for the deer!
Congrats on some fine deer. Gotta love the excitement of ground hunting.
