Title: Hill arrow rest?
Post by: lpcjon2 on December 24, 2009, 08:38:00 PM
What is the best strike plate and arrow rest for a Hill Tembo 70# the handle is a sharp cut and the shelf is only 3/8" wide?

I like one continuous piece of thin leather, just like they come with.

Would you go with seal skin if the hair is  cut short?

You could, but the overall thickness would cut down on available working shelf space, IMO. Is there a problem with the thin leather type they normally come with? I've always been happy with the original, and have found sealskin to wear on the bows I've tried it on.

This is just one guy's opinion, but there you have it. If you'd like, make it a two-piece and leave a small gap at the inside bend of the riser and shelf.

Look at Goodwill for a pair of thin leather dress gloves. There should be enough for several bows and you can usually get a pair for less than a buck.

If you can't find any, give me a yell and I'll send ya some.

Thin elk or deer hide works great.

I use the standard leather whether it is on my Schulz, Miller, Robertson or my own.

You certainly could use seal skin, but the original type rest is more than adequate. Due to the paradox the arrow bends inward on release and then around the handle. It uses the rest for a split second, the whole arrow does not ride on the rest upon release. The paradox is more pronounced with a longbows than a recurve, because the recurve is more likely cut past center(generally). Your form, release and set up are a factor as well, but it is primarily due to the design. This is also why stiffer spine arrows can be shot from a center-shot bow.

You probably will see a small area of wear on the strike plate, and the seal skin will wear faster than a piece of leather. If you like the look of the seal, use it.

Hey Tim, here are a couple of pics of the rests on some random Hills.

Huds right, If your arrows are spined right, little will touch that rest on release anyway.

Merry Christmas!

If you can't find any locally, call Craig Ekin at Howard Hill Archery and get him to send you a piece. I'm sure 3 Rivers, Kustom King etc would have it too. Believe someone was giving a piece away in one of the Christmas drawings too.

Too funny Tim, I laughingly mentioned it to mine, and got a "watch you talikin' bout" look. Guess I'll find a belt.
