Which state in your opinion has the most all around different game species to which you can hunt (exotics that cost an arm and a leg do not count)with trad gear on your own without paying a guide service. :campfire: :coffee: :goldtooth:

Colorado (?)

In VT as a non res you can get a bear, three turkeys, three deer, and numerous small game all over the counter.Moose is a lottery. All DIY.
I'm not saying we're the best, but I'm thankful we can hunt all of those over the counter(Obviously except moose, but if I get the area I want we're talking a 15-20 minute drive).
Some states have lottery for turkey.Turkey!... :saywhat: We're to the point here they should make it three birds in the spring instead of two as it is.

I am going to throw ND in the ring. Whitetail, mule deer, eastern gobblers and meriams, elk, big horn sheep, moose, mountain lion and I am sure I am missing a few. Plus tons of small game, fox, coyote, racoons. Great place to hunt.
-
I would guess Idaho...
-
Alaska but...
-
I thought Texas would have been the first.Colorado is where my dad and his buddies went every year for a DIYS 30 day hunt on the mountain for elk and sheep.
-
I think Idaho. Muleys, Whitetails, Elk, Bear, Lion, and now Wolf. Pretty tough country, though.
-
I don't know that Texas is the best. Texas is a lot of fun year round to hunt. The biggest problem Texas has is a lack of public lands. if you have the $$$ ya can hunt sumpin in Texas 7x24x365. Well you would need $$$$$$. $$$ would get you one hunt. :)

I second that and if you can find a way for me to convince my wife to move their I will owe you one...LOL
-
I'll 3rd Montana. Great opportunities and beautiful country.
-
Steve H, you didnt give us the but.

Pennsylvania has nearly three million acres of public land, and lots of private land that folks can hunt. I'm happy right here in Penn's Woods.
-
Oregon or Washington.
Roosevelt elk, rocky mountain elk, mule deer, blacktail deer, whitetail deer, Rocky mountain bighorn, California bighorn, mountain goat, black bear, cougar, Rio Grand and Merriam's turkey's, coyote, small game and antelope (Oregon).
Antelope, sheep and goat are a tough draw, but the rest can be bought over the counter for archery and none require a guide.

Any Rocky Mountain state will have a better variety of game. Problem is,the seasons all occur at about the same time and the seasons tend to be much shorter than deer seasons in the east/ midwest. It's all a trade off. The greatest benefit to hunting in the west is the abundance of public land.

California! Ok,that was a joke.I have hunted alot of states.I think Kansas would rank high in my book.

I moved to Wyoming in 1977 for the hunting, fishing, and outdoor activities that we have. Montana and Idaho would be similar, and are great places. Colorado has gotten a bit overpopulated for my taste, at least along the front range, but western Colorado is still pretty nice. We snowbird now in Arizona, which is great for three months but hard to draw a tag to hunt anything. I guess I'm pretty happy in Wyoming.
-
long as they got squirrels ,bunnies, birds i'll go!
-
Of course the 54th State CANADA ! LOL
-
Utah has tough draws but I think there are 10 species of big game that call it home.

Anywhere but Pa

MT.

Have to give my 23 cents to the Rocky Mt. states and Alaska. Quite the variety. Certainly helps to be a resident. In Alaska, a NR's options certainly get better if you have relatives that live there (Take note my Brother-in-Law!).
-
Texas has a lot of hunting year round, but only if you have money.
-
Alaska. At least I hope so. Moving up this summer.
-
I thought Texas is a country? I like Wyoming the best. Although it is getting messed up with oil and gas and other things.

I will throw Iowa into the mix. I can hunt whitetail, tree rats, bunnies, groundhogs, turkeys, coons, pheasants and yotes out my backdoor. Bobcats in southern part of the state as well! I think the season is pretty long(October 1-mid January). We can not hunt with a stick and string for about 3 weeks in early December during shotgun season. Coyotes are hunted year round.
If you are not blessed with land, not much for public land if put up to other states.
My landowner tags are over the counter and very cheap. I think resident tags are around $25-28 each. Non-resident whitetail is a loto and cost a lot!
Good state to hunt if you are already here. My hubby is a mountain climber and dreams of Colorado. Maybe someday! I think I will keep my timber in Iowa for eery Novemeber no mater what!

Clearly Washington DC!
-
TX is an awesome state to hunt....but you have to either own land or lease.
Variety of game, long seasons, and doesn't get TOO cold most of the time.

How about Nebraska or Missouri. Deer, turkeys, small game, fishing galore (especially MO). Pronghorns and draw elk (NE). Plus eastern, western and Canadian hunting is only a 12-16 hr drive from where I live in SW MO. Right in the middle of it all.
