Title: HUMBLED!
Post by: lpcjon2 on December 24, 2009, 09:59:00 PM
Well I have to say that I have been humbled by the rating system(2stars). I would like to say that I am sorry to anyone who I may have offended with any of my posts.I have been told (by my wife) that sometimes I may think something is funny to me and it is not to everyone else.
Just to let you guys know I am a straight shooter and have good values, I am a former Marine, and In my job I have to be straight to the point aggressive and thick skinned.I can be extremely sarcastic at times and I don't mean any harm. This site has brought me closer to  myself and my children with the values and sportsmanship that is hard to find out in the real world. What I learn here I pass it on to my children and want them to understand that there is good  in this world. So in closing Thank you for your ratings and it is ok to be knocked down a peg or two, that's how you get knowledge and experience.    :knothead:

You have two stars. I still have 0 and have delt with many on here. Sometimes the rating does not equal the person. Keep the chin up. This is a great site with great values.

I really don't know why we have a popularity rating on this fine site to begin with. I already thought most of us on here were 5 star folks to begin with? Me personally have never thought anybody I've ever dealt with were any less than that.

Don't let it bother you, but I understand that it can be humbling.

The bush is my life but when it comes to computers, I'm in kindergarden and a bit shy to post very much. I was away in the bush (guiding and bowhunting) for a few months and upon my return have discovered that I am not a Trad Bowhunter, and that I don't deserve any stars at all. LOL

Seriously though, I don't expect anything to the contrary since no one knows me here and I spend too much time in the bush to be able to spend a lot of time on Tradgang. I think however, that it is a great site and I really enjoy visiting here. I also realize that there has to be some sort of control and it is difficult to accommodate everyone.

You sound like a good person, and good people do not seem in short supply here.

Tim, I don't know who rated me at 5 stars, but whoever it was,I was greatly surprized!!!!! I have always considered myself a "middle of the road" type of guy, really nothing special.

That being said, I have only rated a few people myself, and those were close friends that I have personaly known for many years and they are many rungs on the ladder above me in my eyes. As a former Marine myself,I know that you have to start at the bottom, and fight your way to the top before you can really say that you have "taken the hill".

As for the rating system,I can take it or leave it. I have to agree with Coonbait though,I think most of the folks here were 5 star folks to begin with.

Tim, I don't really understand how this rating system works either. When you had only two votes I know for a fact that one of them was a 5. Even if the other vote was the lowest, a 1, it should have averaged you out to a 3 yet it only showed a 2. I wouldn't worry about it.

I understand the need for having a system like this but I fear it's possibly going to backfire causing more problems than it solves by turning it into a personality contest rather than identifying problem people. Hope not.

Sorry, the ratings mean nothing to me. Until you have met me in person and spent some time with me, it is all BS. Over the internet ya never know, someone who is a mass murderer but seems like a great person on here could get 5 stars!! Sorry but get rid of them, they mean nothing!! Shawn

I agree with Jeff and I thank you for your service to our country.
I've always given everyone I meet the benefit of starting out with the highest possible level of consideration and then it's up to that persons behavior whether they move anywhere in relationship with me. It's all done on a one to one, never based on anyone else s' opinion(s).

My 2 cents worth

I thank you for your service to our country also. I would like to add that I am not sure how well this rating system will work either. Some folks are just plain over sensitive and just the wrong choice of words could make them hold some kind of grudge or give them a bad impression by what was said, even if there was no harm meant. In return, they can rate you low. I'm not so sure how well this will turn out and hope that it does not chase away good people. Merry Christmas to you and your family bro.  :)

Hi There,

I am a former Army Seargent and can be blunt to the point of offensive at times, so I know what your talking about in work and the past life we have led in the military.   I try to temper that tendency and treat everyone with respect.  I have to say that I agree with the previous statements that ratings do not belong on this site.

The one exception I would make to that statement is that if you are a sponsor or selling products a rating system have a valid place.  It lets people know you are a good person to do business with.

As for someone rating you a two, I bet it was one person and they don't like one of your posts.  There are way to many people in this world who think that everyone should think and talk like they do.  Lots of folks in America have forgotten what the first amendment is about.  Freedom of Speech for all, including those who disagree with them.

Well if folks would use the rating system the right way....

It just supposed to be to rate folks that you have personally dealt with in the classifieds. Just a gauge to let someone have an idea what kind of transactions others might have had with that person previously.

It's certainly not perfect, but we're only trying to improve things and weed out the bad apples.

There could be some folks using it the wrong way and just rating someone for how he posts. And sometimes the way someone posts really tells nothing about the person behind the computer.

It'll all iron out over time....

Merry Christmas and thanx for your service!

I have bought many things from this site and never had a problem. Obviously though with the recent changes in the classifieds section and this ratting system there have been problems, what a shame. It's a me me world and a world with easily hurt feelings, as far as ratings go I did not even know what it was until I read this post. If it is used like Guru posted it would be a good thing so I would not be bothered by someone rating something you may have posted. Thank You for your service to our country!

I am ex military and a retired cop. Guess what? I can be abrasive at times. I also have strong feelings about the direction our country is taking, and they are not positive. If folks don't like that, oh well. Just to prove the point, I think a rating system is a bunch of hooey. That being said, thanks for your service and thanks for doing a thankless job. I don't know you personally, but I sure respect what you do and have done professionally. Don't let some silly system like an internet 'rating' system get to you, and keep on keeping on.

I think you need to read Guru's post and understand what the ratings are all about. I would also add that while this internet stuff is really neat it can sometimes be difficult to convey certain types of humor and dipolmacy is not always conveyed the way we might intend. This is a great site and some of the best guys I know, and I have met a few, are just good people. You are in good company.

I saw the stars, wondered a moment, and went on. Not that I have a lot of time these days, a mailma'am at a snowy Christmas.

I never saw the explanation, must have missed it in the flurry. It would be good to have a rating system for those in the classifieds. Perhaps something that shows up either in the classifieds only or the profile only, with an explanation there and at the voting link.

Well, that mystery has been cleared up, I'll be off to find another. Merry Christmas, all you wonderful folks. Especially those in the service of America. When you hear a siren on the road, or see a police cruiser, an ambulance or fire truck out in the neighborhood, pray for them. I rate them a universe of stars.

Coonbait said it well. Guru has a very valid point also.

I went from 0 to 5 overnight. What a Christmas surprise and I know it is not to mean much but it was a great gift after being up at 2;30 am to salt the parking lots at my work so people would be able to walk and not fall and to come home and find out that I do have friends.

You have all been great to deal with and I hope to make more friends this new year.

the member rating system isn't a popularity contest.  it's a tool, at best.

however, if you do think a 5 star rating means something positive to you and for you, that may be enuf of an incentive to endeavor making sure your online personality befits 5 stars.

Not sure how the system works. If you leave a rating, does that person know who left the rating?
Could it become a revenge war?

members have no access to the mechanics of the rating system - they do not know who rated them, nor the rating value given.

all that you'll know is HOW MANY members rated you and what the aggregate of the ratings means in allocated displayed member RATING STARS.

It does not matter to me personally but it is not just for classified dealings according to the original post.

the member rating system can be whatever you want it to be, or don't turn it on for your profile.

as guru alluded to, in the best of all world's it can be an indication of how you participate in the classifieds.  it's just a tool.  turn it on or off - use it or not - all are your calls.

another tool that hasn't been mentioned yet is your profile signature line.  if you have had a good classifieds deal with another member, mention that in your signature line, perhaps as ...

"GOOD MEMBER DEALS WITH - (add the member handles that apply here)."

C'mon folks, give it a chance. We are criticizing something that just got started. I'm sure the mods are going to need time to work out some kinks, but we have to let time take it's toll. If you don't care for it then opt out. Just give things time to work themselves out.
Question: Would it be too much work for someone who rates someone too low to have to explain to A mod(via PM only) why he/she rated that person that low? This might be too much work but I wanted to ask.

Since we are on the subject, I would like to say that I hadn't thought about the classifieds. I see how they could be useful to some people, but I never thought about selling stuff, especially being across the border (extra shipping costs, duty, exchange, etc.).

I thought that the rating was to assess a person's credibility, experience, helpfulness, personality, etc. pertaining to their posts (and I guess it could be used that way too).

I understand now, and the whole thing makes more sense.

mike, i wrote a program that identifies just what member rated what other member(s) and what rating each one has.  so we do have that confidential info (only available to admin) that will NOT be shared.

HOWEVER, *if* we see a 'pattern' whereby a member is 'stuffing the ballot box' by dishing out predominantly low ratings, we're gonna have a chat with that member.

only takes less than one second for my code to read through many thousands of member profile records and spit out who done what to whom.

the big question will be 'why?'.

I like the idea of the rating be used for the classifieds like Curt (Guru) said. It could be helpful identifying those who have made bad deals with our members.
But like MikeM stated the original explanation of the rating system didn't spell it out that way.  Glad I got a better understanding now.

When the ratings started I just rated everyone I could remember dealing with from the classifieds, all Class Acts of course. I  couldn't imagine a case where I'd rate anyone, good or bad, for anything else, since anything other than a physical transaction is my OPINION, which could be wrong.

IpcJon2,

I may have reacted too strongly to one of your posts and I apologize.  Sometimes I take things too seriously or fail to see the implied humor.

However, Hunting, fishing, wildlife, and all things outdoor related the outdoors are the most important parts of my life outside of my family. Many places that I hunted and fished are long gone and knuckleheads have been all too common over the years.

Anyway, you sound like a really good guy with strong values and ethics, and one who is serious about hunting.  In addition,I have enjoyed reading many of your posts. I am glad you are here.

Nevertheless, I am glad rating system isn't based upon posts as I don't do well in popularity contests, especially when I believe strongly in the subject. However, loyalty is one of my best assets.

Used properly it was a good idea. You guys will think of a way to make it work with the classifieds. Appreciate your efforts, you had our best interest in mind. As to personal ratings!

I believe we should be thoughtful of others and choose our words appropriately, but we should also speak straight and honest with a sincereity that comes from our heart. To do so should not penalize us in any manner.

Rob,

Thank you.  I respect your goals for the site and appreciate the work you and your fellow admins do to make this a great site.  I remain firmly persuaded that an anonymous rating system that allows the suggestion that people have made less than honorable deals without giving those people any way to respond cannot satisfy the standard of fundamental fairness.

Again, thank you.

I think the site runs faster for me now also.
I think it was neat to read this post and how a simple rating system can be viewed by the different folks of tradgang. I think that the admin/techie dudes have a tuff job quelling all the fires and wipeing our noses for us. Lets help em out and just BE THE GOOD FOLKS WE ARE. If a bad apple comes along then, well, call it to the attention of a mod and hang on for a minute. I watched The Boss roll hard a month or so back on a con. It'll wash itself out.
Merry Christmas.

That's a good call Rob.  Rating systems like this become hardly more than a popularity contest as friends vote for friends, etc.

For those have been here for a while, they know what the site is about and the decorum that is expected of them.

Rob,
This is something you are probably already aware of but just an idea I thought I would mention.
What they have set up on archerytalk (hope its OK to mention other site, I'm not sure) is a feed back strictly for the classifieds.  Once a transaction is completed you are able to leave feedback that is viewable by all.  You have to attatch the thread to your feed back to legitimize it and to let everyone see who is leaving the feed back.  It works both ways were guys can leave feed back for buyers and sellers.  EX: quick payer, smooth transaction, fast shipper etc. etc. It lets you build up a history almost like a small scale credit rating for others to view.  Just an idea to throw out there.  Joe

Also great job on the idea of having to get permission to post in the classifieds.  Its
a great way to deter scammers and protect the rest of the Gang.       Joe
