That's right, I had the pleasure of meeting and hunting with "alligatorDonD", Don Davis while down in Florida for the holidays.I've always thought he had one of the best handles on TG...get it..."Dundee, Don D"...ok,ok....back to hunting.....
After reading about some of Don's hunts that he's shared with Don Thomas, in TBM, I knew he was one fella I'd like to meet if I ever got back down to Florida. I shook his hand on Saturday afternoon, and we on our way to some very "sacred" Florida hunting ground....don't even ask me what the name of the club was, because I really don't know...but it's got a long history. Land to hunt in Florida doesn't get much prettier!
I un-loaded my gear and Don into'd me to some of the guys in camp. Camp was typical of old Fl hunting camps that I've been to...
Shortly after meeting all that were in camp that afternoon, we were dressed and off to one of Don's favorite areas to hunt at the club...."the Orange Grove"...old over grown sweet orange trees....
Working our way in....
The main course.....
Hog sign was abundant and fresh...
After checking a stand in there, we got out and slowly creepped around, looking and listening for hogs. We ended up seeing 3 deer, 1 doe, one unknown, and 1 small racked buck. But for whatever reason, we never did even hear a hog that evening despite all the fresh sign....
It was still a great afternoon of hunting with a new friend. After 5 years since my last hunt in Fl, I was again hunting in Fl and loving every minute of it!
Back at camp everyone gathered, some deer were seen, some hogs as well, not shots, but everyone was smiling.
After a gourmet dinner of Don's elk burgers, Craig's pulled pork, topped off with some chocolate cake...we all ended up at the target to shoot a little....
-
:campfire:
-
For some odd reason, I feel like I have to share this(don't ask me why)....
...So for whatever reason Matt Shuster, had told Don that I was some sort of hot-shot shooter, and Don was letting everyone know. Now anyone that knows me, knows that I do take pride in my shooting, I'm no hot-shot, but I've worked hard over the years to get where I am now. Shooting in front of people doesn't bother me, in fact I really enjoy it. Nor does anyone "breaking my chops" while I'm shooting bother me....I'm usually pretty "cool under fire" so to speak....
So we gather up, several trad shooters, including Jay and Karen Campbell(I'm sure you've read about their adventures in TBM).....
Now remember, Don's telling everyone that Matt Shuster told him that bla,bla,bla.....
I totally embarrassed myself! I haven't shot that bad since the last time I was in Florida shooting with TG'er Greg Dudley! I couldn't believe how bad I shot...I mean my first shot missed the whole bag target from 25yds! After that I was all over the bag.....usually when I'm a little off...I'm just a little off and within a couple shots things get better....not so this time!
A serious case of "humble pie"!!!!
By the way....Jay Campbell edged out Don D. for the "camp champ" for the night....
The next morning after seeing where the other members where headed as not to bother them, Don and I headed out into a beautiful sunrise....
The plan was to sneak around a few spots, then about 8-9ish go stalk a feeder that member dave had told us might be worth checking out.
For my first walkabout of the morning, Don sent me out on my own to sneak around in a big loop and meet him back at the truck.
Didn't see or hear anything as far as hogs, but I did run into this guy....
Evil looking little thing...anyone know anything about them?
Hunting these swamps of the south is like walking back in time...so much history, and so much mystery.....
We drove back out a little of the way we drove in and got out of the truck to do some still hunting, anf from a distance try to pin point exactly where the feeder was, get the wind right, and sneak in.
After slowly moving and looking several hundred yards, Don figured out exactly where Dave's feeder was. We made a big loop around to the south, got the wind in our favor and slowly moved in from about 300yds.....
-
Now not knowing how the feeder was set-up, what the cover looked like close around it, even what side of the tree it hung, I was constantly studying the tree/feeder with my bino's as I closed in.
The closer I got, I could see that the feeder was hung on the back-side of the tree from where I was coming from. But I still had no idea how the cover was around the area, so at about 50yds. I turned and motioned to Don to ask which way....he gave me the ol' palms up and shoulder shrugg, not knowing the feeder himself.....
So little by little I closed in with every step making sure I was making the right decision to work the cover and optomize the wind direction.
At about 40 yds. I started to hear "something" at the feeder and motioned to Don pointing at my ear, then to the feeder...My heart rate was climbing! But that something could be an armadillo, opposum, turkeys, deer......
At about 30yds. I could see I'd made the right decision on the path I took to approach the area. My appoach was silent and the palmetto clumps kept me well hidden.....
At about 25 yds suddenly a hen Osceola busted out and ran for cover...Dang!
But I could still hear movement by the feeder...I crept closer.....
Two more very carefully placed steps around the palmettos revealed a floppy ear...HOGS!!!!
My heart was suddenly hammering in my chest, this is what we live for!
One more step revealed three adult hogs, and 4-5 little 15 pounders. Don had told me earlier that the club encourages member and guests to only shoot boar hogs, so I had to be careful. Anyone thats ever been around hogs knows that they never stop moving and can be hard to keep track of. The biggest was without a doubt a sow, she's the first one I saw. One of the other two was definatly a sow as well. But the other big one was undeniably a boar, and very cool looking reddish black one at that!
With all the jostling around, it's never easy to get things right for a shot when multiple hogs are involved. But after about 30 very tense seconds a lane opened up and the broadside boar....
I picked my spot low and tight and started to draw my CX shaft, tipped with 300grs. of VPA Terminator, loading the limbs on "Timex", my Kempf Kwyk Styk, hit anchor and as the string started to slip I knew my timing was bad...he stepped forward!
-
DOH!!
-
Curt, We used to have tons of those little spiders in Louisiana. We called them jewel spiders, don't remember them being one of the ones to watch out for or any reason to be scared of them. Just real weird looking!! Joe
-
Timing was off on the "Timex"?
Dang!!!
-
The arrow blew thru him in a flash way too far back and the hogs busted out,but quickly stopped in confusion...including the one I'd just put my broadhead thru. I knew i needed to get another arrow in him!
I stepped forward, as I nocked another arrow and quickly sent another arrow into the now moving almost directly away hog. Not a shot I'd normally take, but in this situation, it neede to be done. The arrow hit him high, effecting his back end, but not fully incapacitating it. He made a valeint effort to get away, but a third arrow to the chest ended it quickly.....I walked away....
I didn't feel the need to be there when he passed. So I walked away giving thanx for the opportunity to end it quick. Sometimes thing just don't work out as we envision them....
I walked back the way I came from looking for Don and right about the time I saw him, I heard something else in the palmettos right by the feeder. I motioned to him that I heard something again, and got down on my knees to have a look...
This is what came out.....
I smiled and motioned again to Don letting him know that I had tiny pigs in front of me....
He motioned back to try to catch one....
When I took two steps closer they laid down in an instinctual attemp to hide.....I slowly reached down and snatched up a very "squeely" about 5# hog!

I came in from dead center of the pix, from behind the palmetto patch....
A very cool looking hog....

We loaded up, and headed for camp....but the ride back was interrupted....in a good way!
-
Good stuff Curt. Congrats on a fine hog. Wonderful country and photos. Love that feeling of hunting in a tropical paradise - like a pre historic beast could step out at any moment.
-
Cool looking hog indeed!!!
Great job on the follow up. Something only experience can bring.
-
NICE pig Curt! :clapper: Unusual looking coat for sure, it'd make a lovely, if bristly, rug.
-
Congrats Guru on a very cool hunt. Thanks for
sharing.
-
very nice!
pretty looking pig country
-
Well that takes the pressure off his visit to my camp, Hogdancer, should I put him in the "punishment" stand? Course he hasn't done anything wrong yet. I'll haveta talk with Biggie and see what to do.
-
left us hanging on the "interrupted"...come on Guru!!!! :campfire:

This is getting good.

-
Way to tell it buddy!! Nice hog too!
:wavey:
-
Nice hog, pics and story thanks for sharing.
-
Great hog Curt!
Congratulations on keeping your wits about you and getting a second arrow in him. It’s not a situation that any of us want to be in but it was the hand you were dealt and you played it right. :campfire:
-
Thanx fellas.....
Easy now Marty, at least give me a chance to do something wrong....it won't be long before I'm usually doing something I shouldn't :goldtooth:
Besides...Thomas wouldn't do that to me ;)
Sorry for the delay, I was out riding bikes with the family. Gotta keep the ol' wickets in shape to drag Marty's critters to the buggy. Gotta take care of the host :p
Sooooo, we were almost to camp and Don hits the brakes while saying..."so ya wanna try for another hog?"....silly question!!
I did have a bit of a pickle though...I only had one sharp BH left in my quiver....after what had happened earlier, I was feeling a bit "undergunned".....
I know, I know...."ya only need one"....I knew I had to make it count....I had one razor sharp Snuffer....It was on!
I easily covered the 500yds following a bare barb-wire fence row. Then at 100yds, I hit a bisecting barb-wire fence row that took me to the lone tree in the pasture. It was a raggedy looking thing about 10ft. tall, and about 8in. in dia.....but that still left me 30yds or so away from the closest pig and about 40yds from the furthest...
I stopped to grab my camera....
Then grabbed my binos to get a real good look at them to see if there was a boar in the bunch....
The 3 biggest one's, all black were all very fat sows with young. The next biggest, spotted was also a sow. But there was one, the gray one in the pic, that, had I not gotten a good look at, and if I was in s. Texas, would have swore it was a Javelina! I mean his grizzled gray hair and size were a perfect match! He was a boar!
Albiet, not very big, but if I could pull this off, I'd be proud to have him....
I played cat and mouse with them for a while trying to "hide in plain site" while maintaining a positive wind. I was close enough several times to shoot a couple of the biggest sows. But the little Javi always stayed a little too far...
Eventually they had figured out something wasn't quite right and slowly moved off into some cover...but I was right behind them.
Again, I managed to get close to one of the big sows, but never did see the Javi...but I could hear them as they moved off heading in a direction that looked to be taking them into the back part of what I thought was another pasture when I passed by earlier.....
I looped back around going slow constantly checking thw wind, and sure enough the pasture indeed did cut back it, and I saw movement up ahead......I closed within thirty yards....
Then I got with 20yds.....
Once again a couple of the biggest sows moved even closer and were with range......
But that dang little "Javelina" boar hog just wouldn't come any closer than 25yds....eventually they worked there way into the swamp, and I backed out.....
I had some work to do.....
-
Great Hog Curt!! Well done keeping your cool and doing what had to be done for a quick and clean (as possible) kill.

-
Curt goes hunting. Animal dies. Same old story huh? :p :p You're just a killing machine! (just razz'n ya' - you tell the best stories around!)

Pulled pork for the JLMBH?
Congrats Curt! I'm sure more will die before you head home. Good luck and be safe!
-
Well, I guess I'd better chime in on this..
So, this Yankee calls me and wants to go hunting so I said sure, we haven't tar and feathered a yankee in quite awhile. So I meet the yankee at the convenience store, (I just followed my nose) and there he was. I was going to try and sneak up on him but being "street savvy" he quickly exited his car and started begging for his life. After he realized I wasn't going to mug him he settled down for the 15 mile trip to the camp. After we arrived in camp, I removed his front bumper from my rear bumper and introduced him to the "gang". Curt kept looking around nervously, saying something about hearing banjos. There were no banjos but he was a bit skittish. So we hit the woods...
-
Good on ya, Don and Curt! Nice pig, mate.
-
Looks like Marjorie Rawlings' old home place! How were the oranges?
Thanks for a story well told through words and pictures. I am very glad that I didn't find it until today, though, Charl... I mean Curt! ;)
Killdeer

That is a cool lookin hog! Conrats again Curt!!
-
Great job Curt,I have been checking daily waiting for the outcome of your hunt.Somehow I knew it would end this way. This afternoon I saw Smitty at work and he called me over to show me something on his phone.Just as I suspected it was you with some fresh porkchops.Nice hog!Safe trip home .glen
-
Congrats on a fine job, now I can't wait till Februrary when I am going down there.
-
So I hear these stories about how Curt is the worlds greatest bow shot. I am in the presence of archery royalty I thought. After our trek into the woods, which produced no hogs in spite of my superior hog guiding skills, we retired to camp for a supper of elk burgers, homemade clam chowder and entertainment by Chef Craig. After supper, knowing that Curt would not offer to showcase his worldclass shooting skills, I challenged him to a friendly shootoff for camp champion of the universe and beyond. Curt was ever the gracious guest and deliberately missed the target to allow us to save face in the presence of greatness. Curt even carried this well into the next days hunt, nearly de-quivering on a single hog to make me feel good about myself.
Thankfully, Curt shot a legal hog, meaning one the guide can drive to, and we were soon returning to camp. Unfortunately, I threw my shoulder out loading hogzilla for my guest and was unable to assist in the cleaning process, which disappointed me greatly. So in an effort to make this up to my friend, I went to Chef Craigs and cooked a large pot of grits so Curt would have some quality food after cleaning hogzilla. Wouldn't you know it but Curt, being the woodsman that he is, must have symbolically ate the hogs heart and liver as he cleaned the boar, because he refused my offering of grits!
-
Great story telling and pics are fantastic.
Congrats on a super hog!
-
Of course, everything I have posted about Curt is a little continuation of the friendly "Yankee" bashing Curt endured during his trip to our camp.
Curt was very thankful to have the opportunity to hunt our property when in reality I was thankful for the opportunity to enjoy his company and watch him in action.
I found Curt to be a fine woodsman and archer and one I would enjoy sharing a camp with anytime. I hope I can host him again soon either afield or afloat , chasing pigs, snook, tarpon or whatever is in season.
-
Curt...great story and as always great pic's...no banjo's huh! well I guess the old saying still holds true..."what goes on in camp, stays in camp" LOL
DonD you sound like you would be a riot in any camp, never a dull moment I'll bet!

Sounds like a great hunting camp.
-
Marty, maybe give him a chance first but any foul-ups and off to the punishment stand !
-
"Pulled pork for the JLMBH"....you bet!!!!!!
Glen, I send you the same pic bud, did you not get it?
Dang Thomas, I thought "we was tight"...right under the bus!!
So tell me a bit about this "punishment stand"
.....Sooooo, back to finish up my little adventure with Don......
The whole yankee thing started on the phone before I even got there. Then I walk up to him and he started makin' sniffin' sounds as I get closer.....I knew I was in trouble!
But it was all in super good fun....the little fellas a pretty good dude! :notworthy:
....so back at camp I'm suddenly all alone to render my hog into managable pieces for my cooler. Don't believe the whole "I threw out my shoulder" bit of Don's either....he hates hogs!
Half way thru I was treated to a phenominal breakfast! Hog sausage, bacon, some big ol' hunks of steak of some sort, eggs, biscuts, and fresh strawberrys...like I said...PHENOMINAL!!!
Once I finished up the hog, and cleaned up. I had to grab my bow and shoot a few arrows. Last night just wasn't sittin' good with me. I have to make sure....I was "OK" :archer:
Right from the first shot, everything was just fine...guess it was just a bad shooting session and a bad time to have one! For some reason Don wasn't too quick to grab his bow this time....
But right about the time I was shooting, Karen Campbell started shooting on the other side of camp. It's not everyday a guy gets to shoot with Karen Campbell!
After shooting with Karen for about 40 minutes, we all sat down for a while to relax.....
Then the part that I hate about any trip came...saying goodby.....
Don, As I told you when we went our seperate ways, I can't thank you enough for the great time I had with you and everyone at camp! Southern hositality at it's finest. I sure hope we can do it all again!!!!!!!
Thanks bud.......
-
Southern hostility at its finest? Naw, you got treated good for a dude what refused grits!
Fine doin's down there, that's for sure. Don does sound like a feller who is easy to spend some time with, and Don, I DO like the way you tell a more believable tale. Some folks tend to prevaricate.
Killdeer
-
5:57am Killy....you'd better go get in a tree.....
-
Chasing those hogs looks like a good time..Looking forward to the pulled pork..
-
I have to go tend to my Postal responsibilities.
No hunt for me!!
Killdeer :(
-
Thanks for sharing...just found the thread. A good way to start the morning!
-
Killy, You and Don would get along like two pea's in a pod!
Tucker, We'll eat good bud!
Biggster...tomorrow or Thursday bud
Can't wait! :campfire:
-
Good job Curt!!  . Great story and Pics..
-
Great hunt and story! Congrats on the hog! :saywhat: I've been bitten more times by that "catch em" mentality than I can remember. Glad you guys had so much fun. Wish I'd been there! :campfire: CK
-
Great job Curt! Nice lookin hog :clapper:
-
Don, thanks for taking good care of our Little Buddy! I appreciate you not challenging his pallet too much on the first trip, but I fully expect you to treat him to some gator tail and turtle stew on the next trip! Florida just ain't Florida if'n you ain't eatin' gator tail!
Don/Marty, I'll be down in August for more gator hunting with the winner of the PBS free gator hunt, maybe we can do some swap hunting? I have close to 1000 acres of good Indiana whitetail deer ground.
Thanks to both of you for letting us live vicariously as we are sitting here in -2F wind chill!
-
Curt is apparently very good with photoshop, putting my handsome face onto Biggie's body in a couple of those pics. Thankfully everyone knows I'm a champion body builder. I just interpret the term body building a bit differently than most. Curt, you gotta eat your grits if you want to grow up.
-
Great story and pics Curt!!
Don, Great descriptions from the guides point of view!! LOL!!
I am sure hunting with you would be a blast!!!
-
Congratulations on the hog, Curt!
Don't worry about the lousy shooting. Don D and I always bring out the best in people... :biglaugh:
I think I read about that old orange grove hot spot of Don's in an old TBM a few year's back. Good stuff!
-
So I meet the yankee at the convenience store, (I just followed my nose) and there he was.
That's classic !!! :bigsmyl:
What a great story and pictures. Thank you for sharing. Gapmaster :)
-
Guru- I certainly hope you don't expect to have anybody to shoot with that remotely resembles Karen Campbell this coming weekend? Unless you are into very large men from Georgia. If so- I've got you covered.
What are we gonna do on New Years Eve at midnight?
-
Great pics and stories Curt and Don.
-
Hey Greg, The weirdest thing ever man! Are you in TX yet?
Marty you are too much bud :scared:
-
Hey Curt: I get to shoot with Karen Campbell every day - but the magic never wears down. :-) Karen and I both had fun meeting you, glad you enjoyed the first leg of the trip. Marty's camp will be an upgrade, I'm sure, to our little place. By the way, my 14 year old Cody and I found that same group of hogs yesterday, and one of the black sows was dry, so Cody ended up putting her in the cooler - New Year's eve dinner! Come back anytime. - Jay Campbell
-
I don't know what you and Marty are gonna be doing at midnight but you'd better be very quiet about it, cause if you wake me up I'll stuff you both in an old tennis shoe!
-
Hey there Jay! Glad you found a home to hunt hogs- call sometime when you want a change of scenery. I know you don't like feeders so much, but there's plenty of walkin room if you don't mind bears and panthers- a few have moved in since your last visit!!!
-
Jay, Glad you posted here, I didn't know if you were even a TG member.
I was gonna ask Don for your email to send pix and thank you for the invite to stay for another day.....it meant a lot coming from you. You all made this "yankee" feel very much at home at your "little piece of heaven". There's something so special about camps like yours.
I can't thank you all enough for the hospitality, and yes, I would luv to come back some time! Thank You,much appreciated...
Congrats to Cody, that's awesome!! Ya know I thought about that, but really couldn't tell if any were. Just don't have enough experience around hogs, and I sure didn't want to make a mistake. Any pix of Cody's hog?
Biggie, To be honest, I had no idea what Marty had in mind when he asked, but my first thought was "I plan to be sleeping at midnight"...I'm pretty boring. Besides,I plan on being worn out from killin, skinnin', and butchering hogs!!
I'll see you tomorrow!
-
Hey Marty! I've been hoping you would come over and spend time with us! Food's real good. We'll throw on a beef loin and all the fixin's. I owe you for all the kindness you showed me letting me hunt your place so often back in the day.
Curt, Cody and I had a chance to glass those sows for a good long while to pick out the one for him. That scruffy male was still in there, and I may chase him around this weekend. I'm lugging a bunch of camera gear out to get some turkey and pig photos for a few articles that are brewing.
You are welcome back any time, whether through Don or me. As you know, Don Davis is a great hunting companion and friend. Karen and I owe him a great deal for helping me through some rough times, getting me out of the hospital and into the woods.
I'm glad you could get down and find some success! - Jay and Karen Campbell

Marty, Biggie,
Don't be too hard on the little feller, ain't much bigger n a squirrel. Kinda jumpy too. Rattlers should be moving all over the place when the sun is out down there. Didn't you guys lose a Yankee to one a couple years ago, or so the story goes? Curt ain't gotta worry about the bears or panthers-they won't eat Yankees. Probably the smell.

Cool story and pics Curt! Nice work.
Hmmm...you havent lived until you've seen Biggie in his "tighty whiteys"...in person...

Killdeer :saywhat: Trad Gang is more than a place to visit with hunting friends. It is a place to expand ones mind! :D

I don't know what you and Marty are gonna be doing at midnight but you'd better be very quiet about it, cause if you wake me up I'll stuff you both in an old tennis shoe!
:biglaugh:
A good time WILL be had by all!

Nice story from both Curt....and Don! And a nice piggy too, Curt!
I've been to that orange grove....but Don did'nt show me no feeders? Whats up with that Don? I had to work to get my mmmmisss!
It truly is a beautiful place down there. I only had a day to wander with Don, but I won't soon forget it. Fun stuff. And yes the food was incredible...and hey, that Jay Campbell can accompany on the guitar pretty good too! But he can't sing too well. Great camp in my opinion. Congrats again, Curt!
-
Jay, Thanx bud...I hope to take you up on that. Like I said earlier, it means a lot coming from you.....
Don... :scared: Let's hope he's at least moved on to boxer briefs :smileystooges:
Everyone, Thanx so much for the congrats, well wishes, and fun.
You'all are the reason I'll take a chance and pull out my camera mid-stalk to take photos...I just know you'll enjoy "being there with me"! :notworthy:
-
Man Curt, you're up awful early aren't you? What are you excited or something? I'm just wonderin how Biggie is gonna get us into a tennis shoe? I'll havta set my alarm and get up Thursday eve and find out!
-
I have honestly been up since 3:00...this feeling never gets old!
Biggie's all talk, he's one of those guys that are all big and tough behind a computer screen!
When I met him last year with Terry at the Paradise...he was just like a big shy teddy bear :goldtooth:

True, I did not know of the feeder until this past weekend. Besides Mark is a Montanan and an incredible hunter. He certainly isn't the worlds greatest bow shot like Curt- I don't think he missed the target, just one hog because didn't want me to throw out my shoulder loading it, unlike Curt who didn't care about my wellbeing.
Yep the Montanans are my favorite people and if they happen to need someone to share a camp with them, in Montana, I will make the sacrifice. (hint). And they at least will make an effort to eat their grits!
-
GOOD LUCK Curt...keep us updated...and Sky said again that he wishes he was with you :)
-
Well, Mark: Good to hear from you! True, I can't sing much, but its been a good year for guitars. Here (if the photo thing works) is a picture of Karen and me and a few new Taylors. I hear you may be coming down this year again! We'll have a time. I'll show you a feeder, if that's the way you roll. :-) Jay and Karen Campbell

Don, it won't be long and we'll be chasin' hogs in TX!!!!
That's a great pic Jay! I heard ya pickin', but was kinda lost around camp that night and didn't wander over to get a better listen...it was cool to hear though...
I'm about out, we'll "talk" in a couple day

Shhhhhhh-don't tell Guru, but this was right outside of camp last week on the main road- interrupted my wife having one of those oranges on the buggy! How many women won't put down their orange to pose with a rattlesnake?
-
Dang Marty, that thing is still squirming!
I just ordered "Totch" to learn more about how you guys hunt down there in the Glades! Thanks for the recommend DonD.
-
No prob Terry. Not the best written book but the dude led an interesting life for sure. Give me a ring when you are down and we'll try to set you up for some pig huntin. I don't actually have guest privledges at the lease Guru hunted but another member made room. We talk more in Nashville I hope.
Marty, You have to use that snake to scare Curt somehow. Actually he looks like good eatin size, with grits of course.

I love this time of year on Trad Gang. The winter Texas, Georgia, and Florida hunts keep me going. Curt, your hunting tales are always the best. Great hog and way to make it work.

Some mighty fine reading right here!
