Title: checkered grip
Post by: tj69 on January 02, 2010, 03:17:00 PM
What do you think about a checkered grip?
Is it so much better then a "normal" grip?
Or is it just a matter of opinion?
Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences.

To me it's great especially when it's raining.

I wouldn't have a bow without it after having a Schafer with a checkered grip.

It's just me but I don't care for checkered grips. Ofcourse it not just bows. I shot hanguns for years and I'd rather have a good smooth grip that fit my hand. I like the smooth leather grip on my Shrews and the smooth wood of my Great Plains Swift. For me if the grip fits my hand it feels better smooth.

I completely agree. However, checkers are OH so purty to look at.

I like stippled grips, when hands are wet or sweaty it just makes them feel more secure.  Doesn't seem to help my groups!!! lol

Bahrzoo,

You can stipple the grip yourself.
Tim Golder has a very good HOW TO on this forum.

Look back 3 or 4 pages and you should find it.
If not, do a search on STIPPLIED GRIP on POWWow forum.

It's easier than you think.

Love mine on the Schafer.
Had a Bob Lee with it and it was great also. Wish I had that one back.

My Thermal has a very sweet checkered grip;

I have had other bows with checkering also. I can honestly say, not all checkering jobs are the same.

I really like a checkered grip. I live where it's hot and it just feels secure. My hands get very sweaty. Only thing is...I've only held them and never shot one.

Thanks a lot for your thoughts!
I also suppose, that I wouldnt shoot better with a checkered grip. But  "it feels more secure" sounds really good.Thats what I wanted to read  :)
@JL: nice grip!

I have bows with and without.  I definitely like them with checkering.

I like "real" checkering, it can be beautiful (like JL's above) as well as functional. Don't care for some of the chicken scratch stuff you see offered by some bowyers.

I don't care for checkering in the grip...I like mine smooth so that pivot point does what it's supposed to do.   Pivot.

Shoot one before you buy.

I bought a Morrison with a checkered grip.  It was a beautiful bow, but after shooting it for a while, it hurt my hand.
The guy I sold it to loves it. Matter of opinion.
