Title: disappointing day in the woods....ripped off!
Post by: Mike Bolin on January 22, 2010, 03:05:00 PM
Finally had a day with not too much rain and decided to head to my brother-in-law's property and get my stands down and do some post season scouting. 60 acres of hardwood ridges and ravines that I have hunted for over 15 years and have never had an issues with anyone bothering me or my stands.
Got all of my hang-on stands on the east side  down and to the truck and decided to hit the west edge of the property to drop my remaining hang-on and check the ladder stand. GONE! A gorilla hang-on and 6 gorilla sticks and a 15' ladder stand. First time I have ever taken down stand this early since no one has ever messed with any of them, but I am laid off from work and needed to get outside and get my mind off of the lack of finances. Not only am I not working,  I just had some low life hit me for about $200 worth of gear!! I am not a happy camper right now!
I put the word out to the neighbors that it would be a good thing if my stands showed back up at the property, but there's not much chance in that happening. Sorry for the rant, but I needed to vent! Mike

Get used to it. I lost two 15' ladder stands this year on a MN property that is in the boonies. I really think guys are starting to cruise the snowmobile trails and take what they can grab easily.

Very frustrating, but you are hearing of more and more of this low life stuff.

I feel bad for you.  I had the same thing happen a few years ago on private property, only I found out opening morning.  It pretty much spoiled my opener!  We had a forum from the local newspaper, so I posted that I was ripped off and that the thief probably didn't notice my trail cam near by and that I was having the film developed and planned on pressing charges (I didn't really have a trail cam then).  I wrote that the person ought to man up and return my gear.  Lo and behold, I went to my tree 2 days later and my stand and climbing stick were placed nicely under my tree.  In hindsight, I guess I was lucky.  I hope that you have a similar result.  And best wishes on your job search.  That is tough.

Would you just love to catch them in the act? LOL

Mike I feel ya,my dad and i hunted the same property for years.always felt we were safe leaving our stands.A couple of years ago we had two stands stolen and a trail cam(all chained and pad locked to trees).I dont know what to say man other than there are some low lifes out there.it still leaves a sour tast in my mouth when I think about it.And it has nothing to do with the cost of the equipment. Its the principal! All we can do is thank god for the good honest people.I do believe there are more of them in the world than bad ones.

Hey Inn8hunter,
It's pretty hard to imagine that someone would steal a 15" ladder stand.  I buy them on clearance for $40.00.  Hardly worth getting caught and arrested (or much worse if I caught them!) for forty bucks.
Title: Re: disappointing day in the woods....ripped off!
Post by: scottm on January 22, 2010, 03:28:00 PM
The sad thing is like ronp said 40 bucks. If a guy needed a stand that bad I would have given him one.I dont think people steel them because the need them I think they just take them to be jerks.

I have to agree, Scott.  I would have given an honest person a stand, or at least loaned him/her one.

Mike, I feel for you.  It seems like every couple of years, one of my LoneWolf Alpha hang-ons get lifted.  I should also say that everyone one of my stands have super heavy-duty cable locks on them, including the climbing sticks.  They must be highly motivated to climb up there with a hack saw and saw through that thick cable.

I'd never wish anyone harm......but....it wouldn't make me feel too bad to hear about someone accidently falling while trying to steal one of my stands.

Never gonna change people.  I bet if you watch craigslist you will find stands for sale, real cheap too. people claim they don't need them anymore.

I had a buddy who had all his stands cleared off his private property, his dad went through and put up the glow pins to the stands, we assume the theives were out shining deer and decided to follow the glow tacks.

I understand but don't agree if it happens on public property, but private property, not only are they staeling, they are tresspassing too.

Yep! It does not set well with anyone who has any morals.
I lost a ground blind off of private property last year. I reported it stolen but got the results I expected..nothing.

I pray things turn around for you and others that are in the job market.

God bless,Mudd

The thieves around here don't bother with hacksaws, they use portable sawsall! The price of scrap, the easy market for stands, they will get you no matter how hard you try. If they can't steal it they will destroy just to "show" you. Sorry for your loss Mike, hopefully they get some kind of payback down the road.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, man. I know the feeling.

I have a two-man ladder stand that is locked with a heavy cable in the woods right now. I was thinking about putting a sign on it that reads, "Please do not use this stand. There is a hidden trail camera located nearby that is taking pictures of this stand location". Has anyone ever done this before and do you think it would it work?

Yes I had a ladder stand stolen by a bunch slobs who pretend to be hunters. They also tore up the landowners roads. I had a talk with the owner and he said they wouldn't be back. Nothing I hate worse than a thief.LCH

Sorry about your stand Mike, but nothing surprises me anymore. The world has more scumbags today than ever before, then throw in the bad economy and that only compounds the problem.

I live in a small rural town and the thieves have never been as bad as now. The lowlifes are stealing anything and everything they can haul off.

Ronp:

LOL, yes it is hard to beleive. The only thing that made it "tolerable" was the fact that these were end-of-the-year Menard's for $49.

That is what makes "stealing" stands so frustrating. Plus, all of know how long it takes to find that right tree and clear it. And then, like you said, for $50 they could have bought one.

I think some times it is out of spite for someone that thinks they owned the land just because they hunting it 10 years ago.

Sad thing is, that if I was working, I would have paid somebody $25 to help me get 'em out of the woods! LOL!!
The real kicker here is that for 15 years, absolutely no one has touched a thing on this property. I have left pop-up blinds up for the entire turkey season wothout a worry at all. I had even dropped my stands off in a big pile, covered with a tarp so that I could run over there after work and hang a couple, and they were fine.
I would have loved to have walked in on the low lifes and had 'em explain what they were doin'!
 Thanks guys! Mike

Haven't had a stand stolen in about 15 years. But..... My nephew had a real shocker this year. While he was doing an all day hunt some lowlife cut his catalytic converter off his truck! Hear they get $30 for them at the scrap yard.!

Mike,  I really hate to hear that brother!!!  It seems like that is an epidemic in Indiana lately.  I was using a friends trail cam early in the year and I got more photos of teenage boys than I did deer.  My buddy caught them one day as they were loosening the strap on the camera from around the tree. I've also heard a lot of guys at the archery shop complaining about stolen stands.  I've been meaning to get mine down because I'm worried about someone taking off with it, but I need to wait until my wife or someone can go with me.

I was in terra haute on vacation last year and i thought it looked like a great area to hunt.Having your stands stolen sure can take the fun out of it fast. I wish you goodluck on the job. I also was laid off this year and i understand your need to get out and clear the head. Its to bad someone made  your chance to relax a little into another stressor. Hang in there.

I've had 3 hangons stolen over the years,2 off the family property, and it's a lousy feeling...plenty of lowlifes out there.I still have 2 hangons but it's one of the reasons I got a climber that I can take with me each time.
Can't count all the stands I've come across but never for a second did I think of taking them...just can't understand how someone could unless maybe it was on their property.Thieves like this are a much lower life form than those of us here.   "[dntthnk]"

Mike,
Sorry to hear about your personal situation as well as the theft of your stands. It makes my blood boil when I hear of honest people getting ripped off for the things the worked hard to acquire. There are certainly things lower on the tiers of the dirtbag ladder than a thief, but not many.

Yep; I know the feeling well. Years back , first day of vacation ,around 1985, snuck in to tree where my  stand was hung   and it was gone.Felt like an idiot wondering around checking other trees looking for it when I knew where I hung it.Bad enough the stand was stolen but totally ruined my vacation. This happened twice that same year. I went to all neighbors also and no one would say anything but I have to believe someone knew something.Sad part is the thief probably does not  even hunt. I'm not a violent person; but if I ever catch someone in the act of stealing my stands I'm afraid I would seriously consider kicking their a_s and then call the game warden. But sadly in the world we live in I'd probably be the one going to jail for kicking his a_s.These 2 incidents were over 20 years ago and
I still get pis_ed when I think about it.
P.S.
I Have had 2 more stands and a camera stolen in the last 5 years.Gosh Mike; I really wish you wouldn't have brought this up now I'm not happy either. L.O.L. Hang in there Mike and I hope you never lose another stand. It's so sad that there are so many people in the world with no respect for other people and their property.  I've got to go now, I think I'll go kick the cat. L.O.L.

I myself have had two stands taken, one alittle over $200 into the set up, then I thought I would just put out a cheaper model. Well someone had gone out and taken my Bro-inlaws stand(real big and heavy home job) and on their way out seen mine and dropped his and took mine instead. This last season I hunted from the ground. I would never think to take someone's stand, and when I see one I head to another spot. But the laws here in Michigan say if its up after the  close of season its fair game.

For your own heart, try to let go and forgive...

As for the job, I am scheduled for a lay-off for the end of the month but hustled and found another starting the same day. I have a proven track record of beating much more talented and "certified" candidates in job openings (from Fire fighter to Code Enforcement Officer, sales consultant to my new job in a lab) and will be more than happy to offer my assistance in any way I can (resumes, cover letters, etc.) if you think it might help. I've had some incredible coaching...

I've had a number of stands swiped. I have a friend that's gotten to the point of taking major counter measures. 99% of the time if you hang a new stand I'll bet the same pecker heads will come back and steal it again. Here's a nasty little trick that stopped it from happening on some of his propertys. Take your last set of stacken sticks and apoxy razor blades to the back side protruding approx 3/8"s above the step. Do that on the last two or three steps just before the stand. He can tell when he got the dirt bag by blood and meat on all the low steps and the stands still in place. Now I haven't done it but in the last three years I've lost 8 stands so I'm getten close!!!

Watch craigslist.com  There have been a bunch of stands on the Indy site lately.  I'm sure that at least some of them are stolen.  I know cops got a lot to do and priorities are priorities but a lot of what I see on there is likely stolen.  Seems like an easy catch.

Been there man, it stinks. I talked to a game warden the other day, he told me he has started seeing folks cruise the woods with bolt cutters stealing stands. He said there is nothing he can do uintil he catches them with a stad in hand that has anothers name on it, so put your names on them. They claim they forgot the combination or lost the keys. Some people are just sorry like that.

Be careful if you ever do catch them.  I know a lot of people would like to beat the thief like a drum.  If you do it then you will go to jail.  The law will protect them even though they had it coming. BE CAREFUL!!!!!

Truthfully, when I say it cold get ugly, I mean for me. I rarely take a gun with me to my property and most people in my area carry a firearm when in the woods. I would think the type of person to trespass onto my place would probably be armed and definitely be bold; they'd have to trespass over multiple tracts to reach me. I could easily see my alligator mouth overloading my hummingbird butt, and you should never bring a longbow to a gun fight!!

Had a 15'ladder stand stolen myself this year, scumbags left the safety harness hanging 20' feet in the air. Had to tote an extension ladder in there to get my harness. woulda saved me a lot of trouble if they had stole it to!

Yep, I had it happen to me about 15 years ago. I had a nice Lockon taken off private property. Upon closer examination of the tree it was hung on, we found that the dirty little pukes used a shot gun with slugs to shoot the locked chain out of the tree. This happened during bow season. I went home, got my father and we spent the rest of the afternoon walking the "posted" poperty. In all by the end of the day we evicted four hunters that were trespassing. The best feeling in the world was watching them squirm trying to come up with their reason for being there. None of them would admit to stealing the stand but, they all left knowing we were not happy about it. I no longer hunt from trees only the ground. It sucks that you can't leave anything set up. I have a nice DB blind that I would like to set up and leave but, I know that the minute I do it will be gone. Sorry for my ramble but this topic really gets my blood boiling.

I had a ladder stand come up missing one time. Due to the location, I thought there might be a chance that they left it by the road to come back for it later (in the dark).

On a long shot, I started walking to the road and found the stand. Apparently, the trespasser thought I had it in the wrong place. They actually moved the stand to a different tree!!!

I guess there are alot of us that have had to deal with thieves. I spent the moring yesterday pulling my remaining ladders. I usually leave them in place and just loosen the straps and check them for wear in the spring and again in late summer. I am a little spooked to leave anything out there now. Thanks for all of the kind words and support.
On a brighter note, my mom-in-law and son scored me a ticket for the Colts/Jets game today...not costing me a dime! Lunch, transportation and ticket all taken care of. I've got a wonderful family! My tradgang family is pretty darned special too! Mike

Mike,

That is awesome going to the game.. I have the SIX hour pregame on as I type this!

My girlfriend (whose company built a house for Ron Meeks when he coached in St. Louis) gave me Colts tickets the last year of the old RCA dome. Coach Meeks even gave us a "family" pass where we could go hang out with the player families after the game.  What a great day I had in INDY!!

I had six tree steps stolen this year. The stand is homemade and they left it. A few years ago some stole one of my homemade stands. Scumbags!!!  :banghead:

Mike,
Hate to hear about the loss of your property. On our place, theres one side that has a subdivison of 5-10 acre tracts. My brother found a calf that had been tied to a pole that someone was carrying out, they couldn't get over the fence so they just left it there to die. The sheriff was called out and he found a trailcam that someone put on our property no pics on it tho, but it's ours now.
Since my team got it handed to them last week, Go COLTS.

I had a treestand stolen from me some years ago; and filled out a report on its theft- with a description.
Then the following spring; a guy hit a bear over a bait and could not find it.
I went up to his bait; and there was my missing treestand. With my name on it.
I called the sheriffs department; and a deputy came out; and because the stand was locked to the tree- he shot the lock off.
The man was questioned; and had no idea who had taken back my stand; but wanted who ever it was charged with theft. He said it was his stand;(but it had my name on it).
So- he ended up filling out a complaint against me; for stealing 'his' stand.
He was charged with theft; with filing a false police report; illegal baiting; and shooting a sow with cubs.
And found guilty on all counts.

Having your name on the stand or ladder can be a real help....
