Title: So what do you really think about the MARTIN SAVANNAH?
Post by: raideranch on January 22, 2010, 10:55:00 PM
I’ve been shooting recurves but I was thinking about giving longbows another shot.  I like the Savannah and almost everyone post great comments on them but when asked to pick the Savannah or another longbow everyone picks against it.  If I can get a new Savannah for about $400 with no wait is that as good as it gets or would you recommend something else?

Depends on what you like.  I was very un-impressed with the two different ones I've shot.  The owners are friends of mine, and they sold theirs not long after buying them.  You might love it though.

Shoot  a bunch of bows and buy the one you like most.  Otherwise you might get into frustrating trend of buying and selling bows (and arrows).  Find something that you shoot well.  Some bows have similar models which will give you some flexibility. Look for a style bow wood, grip and what not, not necessarily a specific brand.  For 400. bucks you can find a great bow on the classifieds (also no wait)!

I like the looks of the Savannah and it shoots nicely once you're used to it... BUT I think it is slightly stacky and it is not really a longbow per say... its a hybrid.  For your money there is a Robertson Stykbow Purist someone is selling in the classifieds for a GREAT price.  I had a Robertson that I sold for family expenses and LOVE them.  I think this is a better investment for your $$ and its less than $400!!

I have a Martin Savannah. It was the first trad bow that I ever purchased. Although I have since purchased several custom bows, I still have the Savannah and I love it. In my opinion it remains one of the best "production" bows out there. Let me put it this way: Heaven forbid, but for one reason or another there may come a time when I may sell one or two of my bows. If and when that time ever comes (and I hope it doesn't) the Savannah will not be among them. Some bows are a nice prime rib and lobster luxury. The Savannah is my meat and potatoes.

Yep. There's definitely no doubt where you stand on the Savannah issue. Isn't there an old saying about one man's treasure being another man's junk?   :D

I had one and it was one of the worst longbows I have ever owned.  It was poorly made and cost more than some of the customs I have had over the years.  A Martin Savannah would be the last longbow I would be looking at.

Look around and for second-hand or even new there is a lot to choose from in that price range.

I've shot the Savannha along with a lot of other strongly R/D bows.
After 4-5 years of messing with them I now prefer real longbows and real recurves.
These R/d things are neither and deliver the feel of neither.
From an older trad shooters point of view I dislike them more than compounds,,,in competition they are the cheats longbow.

400 is a great price for a new Savannah. I own one and it's a great shooter, nice bow, I like the larger grip. I have a few other bows and the Savannah has been my hunting bow for a few years.

If you draw past 28" forget it.  It stacks up pretty hard.  I know I put one on a scale.  No bow shoots well when it is stacking.  Up to 28" I am sure it would be fine, thus the varying opinions.  I second the Mohawk.

I looked at one, along with a Bear Montana, a couple PSE and other brand bows on my last trip down to Cabelas. I didn't get to shoot it, so it may be the greatest shooting bow to ever be bent, but comparing it to what's available it seemed like you could get a lot more bow for a lot less money. Just one guys opinion...

14th picture down--check it out, especially the last two archers in the picture.  Can anyone contend that they aren't shooting "real" bows?

I liked the few that I've shot.
You can get a very nice used custom longbow for $400(or less).
I love my Kohannah Fury Ext., Treadways are great, same for Turkey Creek and others.

That's pretty cool. Interesting to see that even 16,000 years ago there were differences in bows among a like group of hunters. I can't help wonder if those first two guys depicted razzed that fourth guy about his bow choice.  :D

My bet is they were all jealous of the 4th guy because he got a pass-through pulling 20# less than they were.  :D

The Savannah I had 3 or 4 years ago was really a nice shooter.  Very quiet and fairly quick.  It was what it was--a well built off the shelf bow. Not a thing wrong with it.
There are deflex/reflex bows that you can buy used (but like new) on here and elsewhere that are a whole lot better for the same money.
Do some searches.
Some great bows which you can find for $400 to $450:  Roy Hall Navajo Apache, Dan Toelke Whip, Acadian Woods Tree Stick, Fedora Excellerator, to name only a few.  Have some fun with the "search" function on Trad Gang and you can learn a bunch about what's out there in your price range.

i owned one and liked it, but my tastes run to "D" braced longbows rather than r/d limbs, so i sold it to trad ganger todd hathaway who promptly used it to win the muzzy longbow division a year or so ago.

like most everything about trad archery, and lotsa other things in life, subjectivity rules and yer tastes and opinions count most.

ymmv.   :D

I just got one and love it. Very nice shooter. I like it. Funny how everyone says other bows are better, the Savannah's too expensive, etc. I shoot my Savannah much better than any of my current bows, and I love the look. Yeah, it's pricey, but IMO, you get what you pay for... It's funny how when you look at places that sell it, like Cabela's, 3rivers, etc. People give it 5 stars. Everyone loves it. Then you look on another website like this one, or other forums, and everybody thinks it sucks. Oh well. To each his own. I'll be hunting with mine along with my soon to be Check Mate this fall...

Seems that most people that have shot the Savannah and got used to it, actually like it...

I had two and liked them both. Got hold of a Roy Hall Apache and fell in love with it. Decided to sell the two Savannahas as well as some other bows I had to reduce my inventory and just stick with two Apaches. Good Luck on whatever you decide.

I don't have one, but I have shot my hunting partners, a #65@28".  His shoots very nice, no hand shock, quiet and fairly fast with a heavy arrow.  To each his own.  I have another brand of bow I'm fond of.

Everyone likes and dislikes bows for their own reasons.I bought a Savannah when they fist came out,I still have mine.It is a great shooting bow, smooth draw and fast as any other bows.I have a few Martin/Howatt bows and everyone I have is well made and solid shooters.I think the Savannah looks good, bubinga riser with zebrawood limbs,I like mine.

The Savannah is my favorite Martin bow. I killed two deer in one season with mine. If you can shoot a longbow, you'll like the Savannah. I regret selling it, but at the time, I felt I had to because I was spending so much on a Blacktail. The Savannah was 45lbs., the Blacktail is 47. Savannah is as smooth and fast as the Blacktail. The only problem I had was learning to grip it correctly. When I learned to hold it in a lose fist, it was very consistent. I think the Savannah excels at long shots. I could hit a gallon jug at 50 yards, which I cannot do with the custom.

It's not more overpriced than a Black Widow...a factory bow 8^).

Actually, I think it is one of the best deflex/reflex bows made.  It does not kick or rattle your teeth....I notice NO hand vibration at all.  It is deadly accurate..has a small pivot that is difficult to torque, and is plenty fast.....right there with most customs.  And...it doesn't stack until past 30" draw.  Some folks wouldn't know stack, from a grocery bag.

Try to find one to shoot, and make a decision based on what you find....not any opinions garnered here or anywhere else.  And that includes my opinion.    :readit:

I shot one through the chrono and was real impressed with the speed.  Then I put it on the weight scale and it gained a little over 5 lbs. from 29" to 30".  Thus it nullifies what I thought was great speed to ok speed.  I may be wrong about that being stack but 5 lbs. in an inch is what I thought was stack.

As George says:shoot one and form your own opinion.
My draw length is 30' and I have no problems with shooting it.Handshock is a tuning issue IMO.If you buy one ,get it 2nd hand.Lots of em out there in 300-350 range.

Hey George,I can stack a lot in a grocery bag,as long as it's one of those paper ones.

I owned a Savannah, bought it off of a dealer at Forksville in 2004, shot it in the Longbow competition there in 2006. It was a 50#er and I knew it like the back of my hand.Shot against all
the big name bows and took first place with it. They do shoot and as far as production longbows go,dollar for dollar, you won't beat the Savannah.

                             Good shooting,
                                      Craig

I am a recurve guy first and foremost, but picked up my buddys savanah and hit great with it. Shoots a large variety of spines and brand of arrows well,no hand shock and fast and smooth. I have shot a lot of custom bows that werent as smooth as my buddy's and ended up trading him out of his. After shooting a few days with it, I am comfortable out to 30yds, not able to say that with any other longbows before, including H Hills, Bear montana's, and a bunch more. I see them used for around$300 on several websites, cant go wrong. If you cant shoot a savanah, probably is you.

The best bow is the one you shoot and discover fits you. No matter what anyone else says. That's why there are people who love their steaks rare and others won't touch it unless it's well-done.
