Title: NEW ZIPPER EVOLUTION RECURVE LIMBS (pics.added help me decide on woods for St.Judes )
Post by: zipper bowss on January 25, 2010, 08:20:00 PM
Hey Folks! I wanted to introduce my new recurve limbs. We will continue to make to origional limbs, they will now be called the Classics. The new limbs are called the Evolution. These new limbs will be available for all 3 of our risers, just as the Classics are.
The testing on the new limbs has gone very well.I have had several people review the limbs for me, including several Trad Gang members as well as Bob Morrison and Jim Belcher.Hopefully some of them will give there openions here.
Now for the numbers.I shot the new limbs throuh my chrono. using a shooting machine so the numbers were consistant and easily repeatable. The test limbs were 49.5 lbs@28" bamboo core with curly maple veneer under clear glass. The arrow weighed 458 grains which is 9.2 grains per pound. When drawn to 28" the average speed with this combination was 194 fps.For these test I used a dynaflight 97 string with 2 cat wiskers for silencers and a brass nock set.The arrow had 3 5" feathers.

Speed is great but not if it sacrafices shootability, or the bow is noisy. It makes no differance how fast a bow is if it is not a joy to shoot. The best part about these limbs is how quiet they are. There is no shock or residual vibration. The Evolution limbs on SXT riser gain 2 lbs per inch up to 31".The new Evolution limbs are also just as forgiving as the Classics.

We will offer all the same options on the Evolution limbs that are available on the Classics.Bamboo cores with a veneer under clear glass are the standard for all of our limbs.Carbon back and foam cores will also be an option.

Ccan't wait to shoot them at K-Zoo Bill. A friend was asking if you have any ILF or metal riser bows coming in the near future to your line-up.

Tracy and I have decided that the final prototype of Evolution limbs will be donated for the St Judes auction. These are the limbs I did the majority of the testing with. These are also the limbs that were sent out for review. These limbs a as good as any we will offer for sale.We just figured this would be a better use for the first set.We will just have to decide what wood combinations we want to use for the riser that will be donated with the limbs. This is where you all come in.Help me decide what woods for the riser. The limbs are unstained curly maple,so the riser should probebly have some light colored wood in them.I will use any of the woods I have in stock EXCEPT Mekassar Ebony.

Folks I had the opportunity to test this bow. I shot a lot of arrows through it. Let me tell you this there is not a smoother limb out there. They are quick and very very quiet. Bill has really made a great new addition to an already great line of bows. If you are thinking about a new recurve the evolution should be on your list to consider.

Bill how did the carbon foam turn out?
ILF? this just keeps getting better.

The carbon backed foam core limbs gain 4-5 fps on average depending on what draw length the tests were done at.From what I could tell the limbs did not sound any different with the carbon than with glass.Since this part is somewhat subjective it will be interesting to see what folks think at the Kalamazoo show.
I will have a few 60" and a few 58" bows with these limbs at Kalamazoo.I have both carbon with foam cores and glass with bamboo cores.
Bill

Oh Bill, Tracy had some more of the jackets made.We will bring them to Kalamazoo.

A few of us were at Bill's shop some weeks ago when he broke out these limbs to try. One of the guys changed his SXT order from longbow limbs to this new recurve limb after shooting both.  They were extremely quiet but still fast and smooth.  I'm partial to my SXT longbow limbs but see the possibility of adding these recurve limbs in the future since they will fit my SXT riser. Bill's always pushing the envelope to come up with new and improved versions of the Zipper.

Bill,
I think a snakewood riser with snakewood veneers on the limbs, would make a nice St Judes bow  :bigsmyl:  I really like the design of your new limb and the preformance shows. See Ya Friday...

Bill,

Besides the limb tips, does the shape of the limbs look different when they are strung with these new evolution limbs?

If so can we see a picture of the side profile of the bow?

Looks and sounds pretty good so far!

Well there you go folks,3 new wood options that could be used in the ST.Judes riser.

The Evolution limbs look similar to the Classic limbs when strung. The tips do not have to be pointed if anyone prefers them square.Usualy any limbs I build for a Standard or Extreme riser I leave the tips square.I will see if I can convince Tracy to add another picture for me.

My son and I had the opportunity to test-fire Bill's bow that took on his personal riser and new evolution limbs.  Here is a comment back to Bill after having the chance to shoot it:

"I understand the riser is yours Bill but for me this really made the bow. The grip fit my hand very well and enabled me to land the same hand placement everytime. To me the grip is one of the most important aspects of a bow and this one is a winner in my book.

Now for the limbs...overall they are excellent... Quiet, fast, and forgiving.  Granted I only shot out to 15 or so yards, but impressive none the least.

Although the arrows I was shooting were a tad overspined, the bow still handled them well and put them down range with authority.

I liked the way the limbs pulled throughout the draw as well. I noticed no preload at all.

Like I said before, I was absolutely impressed with the limbs, and I think they are going to soon be your top seller once you get them into production.

Thanks for the opportunity to shoot an outstanding bow."

Bill, I'd keep the same woods as it was quite a looker!!!!

I got to spend some time with these limbs as well. I was asked to give my honest opinion of them so that's exactly what you will get.
If they were crap or over hyped I'd tell you about it. Fortunately they are neither. The design exhibits a fair amount of preload, meaning they gain the bulk of their weight early in the draw. They were utterly smooth with a very linear feel to them out to my 29" draw length. I didn't get to chronograph them but they seemed every bit as fast as my Black Douglas so I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the speeds posted earlier. What struck me the most about the limbs was how quiet they are. They had a sub 7" brace height  and I believe a D97 string. A set of cat whiskers was the only thing silencing the setup. They were hunting quiet as is. Easily as quiet as most long b

Sorry, I fat fingered that post from an Ipod and wasn't able to properly edit it.

My final comment was that these limbs were as quiet as most longbows I have shot.
I haven't shot the Classic limbs so I can't say for sure, but I can see no downside to ordering these limbs. They are fast, smooth, quiet and I am told that they have held up well to some torture testing. I'd say that if Zipper offers a riser that suits you, you will be very happy with these limbs.

Got a chance to shoot the new evolution limbs tonight. I didn't think Bill could improve on the SXT, but he has. These limbs are smooth as silk, quiet as a mouse, and flat out smoke an arrow. The bow is also dead in the hand after the shot. Can't wait to get a set!!!
