I haven't had many days to get out after deer this January. Once last week and then again the other day. Last week I saw about 80 deer. I have never seen that many deer in one sit before, it was crazy. The real crazy part were that at least 6 were bucks and they were sparring, rubbing trees and chasing does around. There were 4 younger smaller bucks and decent 8pt and real nice 8pt. The only one that came close enough was a 12" spike. I passed hoping for a doe on the big 8pt.
well yesterday was pretty much the same. I saw about 30 deer and the same bucks. Still chasing does, sparring and rubbing. Just before the deer started moving the wind was swirling and the deer stayed out of range all afternoon. Around 4:15 6 does are 60yds away and heading down my trail. at 25yds they are facing me and catch something on the wind. They stand there sniffing for a good 5 minutes and start to leave. As they were leaving a 4pt came in behind them. He pushed them around and continued toward me. he was nervous and stood behind a tree at 15yds stomping for a few minutes. He finally commited and came by me quartering away. He was walking slowly and I dared not stop him. I drew aimed and released. I'm not sure if he stopped or I was leading him, but I hit him in front of the shoulder. As the arrow entered i got that feeling of disgust, but at the same time I saw a huge red spot appear instantly. he took off like he was shot from a cannon but his rear end looked like it was coming out from under him.
I waited until dark and went up to my buddies house. we waited a bit more and took up the trail. The blood was sparse for the first 200yds but then the deer must have slowed down and it was profuse. we had to cross a stream and as we got across and headed up the hill we saw him laying there. He was stiff as a board so I assume he made it the 600yds at a good run and then collapsed, probably dead just a few minutes after the shot. I'm not happy with the shot, but a little luck and some good bloodtrailing paid off.
The cool part was I was using one of my grandfathers old Zwickey heads.
Some pics from the stand

Funny I thought, pics look like upstate NY. Then I scrolled down to fuind you are in Westchester.
I second that Izzy, I wish bow season was still open although I love tearing up my clothes chasing rabbits. That way I can get the latest and greatest hand me downs!
Great recovery, you say poor shot but you did the job.
Congratulations!

I'm not sure what the overlays are. i just picked this bow up in november from the classifieds. this was only the second trip I've had her in the woods.
The stone walls are everywhere down here

Thanks everyone. it was a cool hunt, I hope to get out next saturday for one last hurrah. I could hunt any morning, but it seems they are not moving at all in the AM and being in there will just do more damage than good. I really hope to take a nice fat doe and make a better shot this time.
As Ishiwannabe said, it was really cool to be able to use my grandfathers old BH. i have boxes of different Zwickeys from him and my father, but i found out Dad never shot the 4 blade. I hope to be able to take a deer with his 70# Grizzly some day, right no thats a little to "stout" for me.
I have had an awesome season and just can't believe how lucky I have been. Even with a less than Ideal shot we were able to find this deer without too much of a problem, except having to drag it back across a 25' wide, fast moving stream in 20 degree weather!
Thanks for letting me share this with all of you!

Nice buck,Cool story, That would be wild to see all of them deer in one sit.
I can't help but wonder when I see them old stone fences from out east. That is some cool history. How old do you think they are?
Thanks
Chuck

Greg,
You dog! Man, I keep putting off buying the CT license......and you keep hunting!
Sounds to me like you have some kind of weird "shrew" disease!!!
Way to go with that ol' Zwick.

Yeah, the only downside is that CT non-res license is now $200....but still worth it to be able to hunt all of Jan and then start again in mid sept!

Yeah, i am not a fan of the aluminum adaptor. They break if the deer runs off with the arrow in them, but 180grains are working so well now that the inserts stuffed with solder gets me there perfectly. i will be figuring something out using steel adaptors next year.

Great hunt and deer.
I love the rock wall, I bet the deer funnel because of the wall.
-
Too bad that deer never got to see how beautifull that bow was!
Good work...
It's almost like year round deer, now that rocks

Thanks. My stand is in that corner because of the rock wall, they funnel along it in front of me and can cross it at the break to the left of me.

Very nice congrats.
