Title: thought this was funny
Post by: CaliCreole on January 26, 2010, 03:29:00 PM
Not sure if this is worth posting or not but i found it slightly amusing.
I went to bass pro shops during my lunch break to use their indoor range, there was one other guy in there shooting a compund bow, we were both at 20 yards and my grouping was pretty tight and consistent with a few bulls eyes. well the compund guy was all over the place couldnt come within 9-12" of center and he starts cussing away "how the eff are you aiming that thing?" "what the hell are you doing" on and on, he was getting extremely frustrated after every shot i took and to make it worst for him the BPS employee came in and said "wow he is kicking your ass with a long bow!" dont get me wrong im not knocking compund shooters to each their own and have recently seen some GREAT compund shooters down at riverside archers hitting moving targets dead on at 60 yards. i just thought it was funny to see the look of frustration on his face trying to figure out how i was able to group wihtout using a sight  :)

Perhaps another concversion is on the way.  I know what that fella is going through.  Once he realizes accuracy isn't solely the result of expensive equiptment and gadgets he will begin to enjoy shooting.

Wishing him luck!!

Or he just may be a new shooter of anything, just learning.

again not really talkin trash on the guy just thought it amusing, im not sure the reason for it, but his bow arm was shaking like crazy, he was able to pull the bow back and anchor it but his bow arm would just shake, the BPS guy was trying to tell him to go down in weight or remove some of his "gadgets" from the bow to make it lighter, but he didnt want to hear it

You see that response from Compund shooters all the time even if they're very good shooters!

I shoot at a small rural archery range and am the only longbow shooter and man do I get alot of attn.
Everyone says "you can't even hear that thing go off" or "dose it take years to learn how to shoot one of those?"
I'm not even a very good shot but when I show them pics. of what I shot with it in the last 2 yrs. they seem inpressed. It's fun!

LOL...welcome to when the boys come over to shoot with me.And I'm not even that good as some here.

Pretty bad when even your buddy says about his brother and some friends he brought over to shoot,"And the guy with no sight has a tighter group than the guys with."(Granted it was only 15yards out of my practice treestand)

The guy with no sight hasn't let his bow get cold all year. The week before game day ain't the time to be blowing the dust off the bow fellas.  ;)

I always find it to be fun to outshoot em.
I outshot two good compound shooting buddies a couple weekends back at the 3D course.  I was on fire, and they weren't.  I didn't hear a whole lot of smack talking the next morning for the second day of the shoot, and none of the compounders wanted to do a round with me.

All the trad guys were lined up and wanted to go round though.  Definately puts a smile on your face.

Let the compound guys try your trad bow. You just might convert them.

I don't get that much reaction from them.  When I'm having a good day, I can hang with some of the mid to lower level compound shooters at the range.  Never seen anyone shoot a stickbow that could out-do the top tier guys that go to the big compound shoots in vegas.  They may be out there, but I haven't seen them.  The compound shooters I see don't really ever get that upset because they know exactly how to fix whatever their shooting problem is. How upset can you really get when you miss the x-ring once out of 20 times?

yeah i went to the riverside range and watched some of the compund guys they where pretty amazing with long distance shots at moving targets. I let teh BPS guy shoot my bow he said he has never shot a trad before and always wanted to try one, he couldnt quite pull the 55# i told him he would probably have a lil more fun with something lighter, he said he will stick to the compund but could appreciate the trad. I offered to le the other guy to shoot my bow as well but he declined

I can truthfully say that I cant shoot my recurve nearly as well as I could my compound back in the day. I used to shoot alot competitively.  I can remember getting upset shooting 2" groups at 40 yards, because that was an "off" day for me. Not bragging or anything but I was a really, really good shot.  Killed 50+ deer with a compound.  And I could put it down and not pick it up for 6 months and within an hour be back shooting almost as well as when I practiced 2 hours a day. It got to where I didnt really enjoy it anymore, the challenge was gone.  Now, I struggle with my recurve, but it is like a breath of fresh air.  No sights to worry about getting knocked off, no rest to adjust, no constant tuning and tweaking.  On bad days with the recurve I know the problem is with me and what is going on between my ears, not my bow.  I love the simplicity, the freedom that the recurve gives me.  And to my surprise none of my buddies that I used to shoot with back in my wheelie bow days ever give a hard time about it.  Sometimes I even think they are a little jealous of the simplicity of trad gear.

I probably just went way off topic with this and if so I apologize.  I was just putting in my $0.02 and it sort of spilled out.

Weight of the compound usually does not make your arm shake unless you are holding out for 10 minutes. Shooting a draw weight that is to much for you or holding to long will cause this. Sounds like a new shooter that overbow'd himself. Hopefully someone will take him under there wing and he listens to good advice before he gives up shooting a bow.
