Title: Best way to remove inserts from Carbon Shafts
Post by: LongStick64 on March 18, 2010, 04:38:00 PM
Guys,

I recently picked up a nice PSR that came with some GT Traditional arrows. I don't really mess around with carbon much, prefer aluminum.
What is the best way to remove the inserts and remove the fletching without damaging the arrow.

I have found that the best for me is to slowly heat the tip while trying to turn it. when it starts to turn pull it out and cool the shaft at once. Fletching I remove by using the dull side of a utility knife.  J.P.

Another method you can try is to pull out the nock and get a drill bit that fits inside. And then whip the shaft toward the floor nocking out the insert.I like to wad up a blanket to catch the insert and bit for when it comes flying out. This works pretty good without using any heat. Then you can try heating up a point and try pulling the insert out,but don't heat the shaft directly.Sometimes depending on what was used to glue the inserts you may have to just cut the shaft alittle shorter removing the insert.

I've used JPE's method - works ok.  Don't overheat and heat only the point that's screwed into the insert.  H

I have an arrow insert tool that I heat up over a torch or kitchen stove top.  Once it is hot, I screw it in and pull.  Works every time.

Why remove the insert? If you are going to remove the fletching, and want to shorten the shaft, cut the nock end.

Randy,

I need to remove the inserts because the previous owner of the arrows used the Goldtip insert with the weight adapters, over time they have become loose and are rattling.
