Title: Soverein Lord Mercury string Question
Post by: katman on April 28, 2010, 10:21:00 PM
I have acquired a Sovereign Lord Mercury recurve, my research finds it is a 1967 or 1968 model. I plan on making a string for it and would like to know if it is fast flight capable. Tips are reinforced on both sides. Bow is 31@28 70" model 1099. The old string with it is 10 strands endless and looks like fast flight. Would D97 be safe or should I stick with B50 or something else? Thanks.

Fast-Flite didn't exist when it was made. It may be able to handle it, but risking that is up to you.

Thanks vermonster, No risk taking here. I'll plan on using B50 either 12 or 14 strands flemish. Have not used B50 in YEARS, would 12 strand stretch to much? Or would 14 be easier on the bow?

12 strands would be plenty for that draw weight.

Thanks again, time to start twisting. I found a B50 formula online of bow poundage times 6 divided by 25 for number of strands but that yields about 7, that sounds to low to me.

I've shot bows mostly in the mid 60's to 70# range and have never needed more than 12 strands of B-50. You could easily get away with 10 and probably 8. I wouldn't be surprised if the 7 strands would be plenty.

10 strands of dacron (B-50, B-500, or B-55) would be my suggestion.  The original string for that bow was probably B-35, maybe linen?

With the low draw weight a FF material would probably be fine, but on the flip side it wouldn't gain much at all other than string durability.

I have a Lord Sovereign also. What a great shooting bow. You should really enjoy shooting that one. I believe I'm using B-50. Jeff
