Title: New sharpening toy update on performance!
Post by: lpcjon2 on June 10, 2010, 02:39:00 PM
At my job we just purchased a Tru Hone sharpening system from Mopec($1800.00). This sharpener will put bevels from 20 degrees to 65 degrees on any knife or for me broadhead. So my question is what is the best bevel for my Hill broadheads and what is a good bevel for my hunting knives? Thanks Tim

Hunting knife - 25 degrees will give a sharp, durable edge.

As for the BH, I would just see what duplicates the angle. Generally, that is the angle you get if you lay a straight edge from the ferrule to the cutting edge. I couldn't find any referrence to an exact degree number.

I tend to go pretty fine on my broadheads. 20-22° usually. I figure that edge-retention doesn't need to be brilliant. It only needs to cut 12-14"  ;)

I keep my knives at either 20, 22 or 25° depending on it's primary use.

I don't have much to offer beyond what Rob said, and if I did I would probably keep it to myself out of jealousy.  That's an awesome sharpening system.  Good luck.

For both knives and broadheads I go with 30*. Not as fine an edge as some would use, but I find it works best when your blade may run into tougher surfaces like bone n gristle.

Well today I had a chance to sharpen some heads. And this thing is AWESOME!!three setting at no more than 4 passes on each and I have Hill heads that will shave hair.I had some Magnus 2-blade and this made them razor sharp!.Then I went to the knives,My Marine k-bar(a sledge hammer with a blade)was razor sharp in less than a minute. My wide blade skinner can cut ham paper thin.I think I can shave with my scallion.
I would highly recommend this sharpener to anyone.I have used tons of sharpeners in my time and this one is by far the best I have ever used.
The only thins is due to the 4 grinding wheels it is not good for 3 blade heads they will only sharpen 3/4 of the edge from the front.
