Title: I hope to hunt with a compound this year!
Post by: Pennsyltuckey pete on June 23, 2010, 12:49:00 PM
It looks like I will be giving up on my trad gear for a while.  I do wish it was because of something like target panic, aka flinching, or a really bad problem with my bow arm.  Truth be told, I just can't hit anyhing with my trad gear any more.  Heck, I can't hit anything with anything!  I just got out of surgery having the tendons reattached in my right elbow.  :scared:    Yes it hurts even with the pain meds.  The docs are saying recovery will be anywhere from four to six months.  :help:

Wouldn't hold it against you even if you had to make the switch totally back to wheels.

Your a bow hunter!!  Enjoy the chase with whatever equipment you use!!    :archer2:

Be blessed and shoot straight!!

I had torn elbow tendon surgery May 22nd of last year.  I was shooting 50# recurve by Sept.  I started with a 20# Little Bear, a 30# target bow and progressed to a 41# hunting bow, 45# hunting bow and eventually back to 50#.  Can shoot 55# with ease now.

Recovery took about 12 weeks with PT and all and after that I did my own at the gym.

You may surprise yourself.

You don't need 65-75# bows. That'll just tear you up anyway. Get well soon.

Drop your high end bow weight and do the light to heavier shooting steps noted above.  I bet you can hit 40 lbs by hunting season.  With damage already having occured I would stop at 50 or 55lbs and give your body a break.

Pete you did leave the 35lb training bow here in Florida. You want me to get it back from "you know who" I could drop it off on my way to Maine in July.

Worst case, your my camera man this year.

Good luck with whatever method you use to get back in shooting shape.

I had a shoulder operation in February a few years ago and was hunting in May of that same year. I realize that it was not the same operation, but I managed to get back by starting with a kid's bow and working my way up. I used a light but legal bow that spring season.

You truly have a traditional heart when you feel that you have to let other traditional people know that you need to rehab with a compound. Do what is necessary, only you know how your arm feels...

good luck with a speedy recovery .pt is a great resorce and i think you can get back in shape before u know it .just work up from the light weights like others have said . 65/75 is really overkill . i used to shoot that and more but it just didnt make me any beter of a shot /hunter/man to shoot that weight.

i am getting much better with lighter and ill be going lighter yet as i feel it could better me in many ways.

The great thing about archery is there are so many options...I get tired of people saying that you can't shoot a compound or you can't shoot a crossbow.  I shoot everything and enjoy them all!!! I shoot tradition 65%, 25% compound, and even shoot the dreaded cheater(crossbow) when it's very cold!!  Thank god for choices!!! You should shoot whatever works for you and whatever you enjoy. Go with a crossbow until you heal up!

I had to do that for part of a season. I even had to use a draw lock too.

If you think a draw lock would be helpful send me a pm. I'd sell it cheap since I no longer need it.

What ever you need to do to stay in the game is important. I would like to add that careful rehab can produce good results and that it is possible that a light recurve or longbow may actually put less stress on the injured tendons than a compound. Perhaps you could check your draw and form out to see if there is something you can do to minimize the threat of further injury with a very light bow first.

was the target panic you speak of caused by pain.  I have never had target panic, so I really don't understand it, but I team rope.  Horses develop a reaction to pain.  It is how you first know they hurt.  You ask them to do a certian move and they do it, but first there is a sudden quick shimmie, of sorts.  It is almost like a reaction due to dread of the pain.  Maybe that is where you got your target panic.

When you remove the pain from the horse they stop the jerk in a matter of days.  This might be good for you...

Shoot lots and lots of stumps!!!!!   :readit:

I sometimes suffer a little target panic during the off hunting season, mainly because I'm trying too hard. I'm my own worst critic and not hitting exactly where I want to leaves me with a flushed face and too worked up to have fun.

Change it up for something silly like balloons, old Barbie dolls, stuffed toys, anything that takes the seriousness out of your practice routine. Get loose and goofey.....all will be well.

I will be in the wood with something be it long bow, atl-atl left handed, recurve or wheelie. Les the 26 # trainer is a good idea.  check with that famous bear slayer and see if he is done with it.  I may need to call bloody ugly home too.  I forgot about both of them till you mentioned the lightweight.  Still under the affect of the strong happy pills. (only excuse I can come up with)

I need a bowl of ice cream!!!! to ice my elbow... yea right...

Hang in there, listen to the Doc, do the PT, and get out there with what ever you can shoot to enjoy the hunt.  I still have a compound and don't plan to get rid of it.  It is dusty, but there if I should need it.

I'd use a crossbow to stay in the game. Hate to say it, but I would. I think you should stay off the bow as long as it takes to recover. The crossbow will allow you to keep your eye sharp and keep hunting. Most states have an exception for crossbow based on age or disability. I think with your surgery you can get that option this year.

Good luck whatever you do and be careful

Crossbow has crossed my mind. They are legal in PA. the expense for one season is  a little steep though. I think  I would rather take the year off and hunt with a camera or take a kid out. If I cant hunt FL deer with Les this fall I will be his go to videographer and grab a january-february hog hunt.

I just have to make sure i don't push and re injure the arm.  You know how us Pennsyltuckey types are... strong as a bulls but only half as bright.

I have to go.  I think I hear my wife cutting all of my bow strings  :)    :)    :)

The draw-loc makes a compound sort of like shooting a variation of a vertical cross bow.

The biggest disappointment I had when using it was not having a legal deer come within my range..lol No turkeys either.

You have your priorities right....first, do no harm....you don't want a short-term setback to become a permanent one by pushing too hard, too soon. I don't know if you're a hockey fan or not, but as an Islanders fan I know what that strategy has done to possibly end Rick DiPietro's career as an NHL goalie. So skip this season if you must. But see if a slow and steady work-up to a 35# longbow will get you into the woods this fall. Even an inexpensive selfbow of that weight could "keep you in the game", and that's what it's all about right? Carrying around the heavy mass weight of a crossbow or compound won't do you any good, either, but a feather of a longbow would be no strain at all.

When I was a kid a 45# bow was about the norm. Some people used 50's and a 55 was a real WOW factor. Maybe it's time to take a step back in time.

Pete,

take it slow and do what the doctor and physical therapist say and you will be back in the saddle before you know it!

Someone mentioned that a trad bow might be easier on it than a compound.  Makes since to me.  Talked to less and he said it was the tendon that you would use to turn a doorknob.  Might be wrong but using a release on a compound seems more like that than drawing a trad bow.

Anyway, know that we are praying for a speedy recovery...oh and offer still stands to cover your spot in Florida   :D

Hunt with whatever gets you out. I had my shoulder done in Dec of 08. 16 days after surgery I started shooting 32#. Slowly built up after April but had to sell all my bows 60 & over. So what. I could shoot them pretty well but really painful so I sold them. I shoot all 50-55 now pain free and love it. I took my compound as backup but didn't need it. Be careful and listen to MD  & PT and get back when you can. I even got my first trad turkey this spring. Best of luck.

Pete what's your draw. I have a 56" 45# at 28 longbow you may borrow for the season if you work up to it and want to try it. I use it for misc small game/fun. Hoping eventually my 3yo will work up to it...of course that'll be another 6-8 years so it's all yours if you want to borrow it.

I'm driving up to NY/CT and back this weekend so if you're not too far from eastern PA we could hook up.

The famous 'Bear Slayer" is ready and willing to give ya the 26#. Don't forget "Lightening" she be a tad under 50 if you don't use your full draw. Your certainly familiar with her since you built her.

I can't believe deer season opens July 31. It ain't natural.

chopix2, Thank you so much for your offer but I have a 26# longbow and a 45# longbow that I made as training bows and have lent out.  Forgot about them till Les reminded me last night so I am covered.  I will build a 35# TO FILL THE GAP!  This will give me a chance to stay involved and I am also going to change the design a little. (Ferrett, Remember the flat spot I showed you on that long bow? Say goodbye!!!!!) Way to much thinking time on my hands.  I am watching hunt videos to pass the time.

Gosh- I would not be afraid of a compound or cross-bow. . . HOWEVER I would not be afraid of a 35-40# curve with really heavy arrows either.  Keep the shot under 15 yds or so and you would be in.

Another thing to consider is shooting with a shoulder harness or your teeth.  You don't have to use your arm to draw!  I have observed guys doing this with great efficiency.

Heading out to the Lease today and fixing up Garrett's Lair for Chip just in case. Figure I can put you two on stand there and you could tell him when to shoot.

In December, 2008 I tore a tendon 50% loose in my bow arm (left shoulder). I think I did this while carrying too much lumber on my shoulder on a DIY carpentry job at home. The doctor was recommmending surgery until I told him my job and my passion (after God and family) was archery. He said I might recover fully after surgery or I might not be able to shoot at all. I opted instead for stretch band therapy (self-applied).  It took WAY longer than I thought it would but by late July (I started in January)I was 100%. I hunted that very season with a 59 pound compound.  The tendon doesn't repair this way but the muscles around it get stronger.  My recurves and limmbs are all (at my draw length)52-40 pounds. In my late twenties and thirties I shot 73 pounds.  I would never recommend anyone shoot more than 60 pounds these days and I think, at least for the beasts I hunt (white-tails, antelope, turkey, and elk) that is 10 pounds (at least) more than needed. In my 44-years of experience I think sharp well-designed broadheads, reasonable distance, and broadside posture is more important than the heavy weight.

ADK Bowman,  I hope you are right but the forced draw curves are totally different and leverage will be on my side at the peak draw weight.  plus making a good shot holding 17# for 30 seconds v. 45 for 30 seconds is on my mind.  If it can be stick, it will be stick!!!!!!! or left hand atl-atl. Therapy was no option as the tendon wa 100% ruptured.  We were hoping therapy too.  Thanks to all for the encouragement.  I get the surgical dressings removed today and get to scratch my arm!  oh how it itches!!!!!  Thanks Les. I look forward to the Northwestern! and Sig! Have fun on the lease. shoot a pig for me!

Good luck on your recovery Pete, nothin wrong with shooting a compound if you need to, alot less stress on your body then a traditional bow, if you do decide to try traditional again when you get stronger theres nothing wrong with 45#, I shot 60# trad bows for years and switched to a 45# (Lucky for me nothing medical) about 6 months ago, best thing I ever did for myself as far as traditional equipment goes.
