Title: Dynaflight 97 vs Dynaflight 10
Post by: X2 on July 04, 2010, 08:59:00 AM
I have been shooting the 97 for a long time.  I am interested in trying some dynaflight 10.  If it is better I would switch over to it, but would like some input in order to make that decision.  Anyone using the 10?  How does it differ.  Is it the same size?  What works best for the center serving on the 10?  I have been using the 62xs and like it.  Thanks for any input.

Here is the response from BCY.
Dynaflight 97 is made from, what was, the best Dyneema yarn, SK75.  Tough and durable. Low creep.  Used on compound and recurve bows.
Dynaflight 10 is made from what is now the best Dyneema yarn, SK78.  Very little difference in strength and durability but even less creep.  Same size as D 97. Same colors available.  Just a little better product because of the lower creep.

Ok, I got in some Dynaflight 10, and built a few strings with it.  I had to make my string 1/2 inch longer than my normal dynaflight 97 strings.  When cutting my flemish strings I can tell the dynaflight 10 is stronger (harder to cut).  So far a lot less creep with the dynaflight 10.  I have shot some arrows through the string and dont notice any difference in sound, but my arrows are acting slightly weak now.  Not a huge difference, other than there is very little creep with the Dynaflight 10.  I will see how the strings act over time.

If you are making skinny strings D97 creeps too much; D10 hardly at all.

Thanks to everyone here for doing the research and posting your results.  I've been very interested since January.

I went to the BCY booth at the ATA show with the intention of placing a big order for B500 and DF97.  They told me what I really wanted was B55 and DF10.  This was the first I had heard of either product and I wasn't ready to change on such short notice.  Apparently most of you are the same.

I recently spoke to Ray Browne of BCY and he explained that creep has driven the decision to add these products.  If you think about it, BCY is in a position to always look for something better but traditonal archery is known for not changing things.  On top of that, all the flemish string makers have shelves filled with spools of string they plan to use and normally they buy string to add/replace a color, not to start collecting colors of a new material.  So it seems status quo is more the issue than the properties of the new product.

If BCY could bring the price of DF10 down then I think we would all eventually make the DF10/B55 switch, as we run low on the old string material.  With the price issue, who knows.

Good point Larry. I keep hearing about D-10 but to date have not tried it.

I like "traditional" and to me that means not chasing every new gadget that comes along. However, if it's a genuine improvement and fits in the definition of "traditional" then I'm all for it. As you said, "If BCY could bring the price of DF10 down then I think we would all eventually make the DF10/B55 switch, as we run low on the old string material. With the price issue, who knows."

Trad folks are generally frugal with their purchases ( other than new bows ).  They are going to have to drop their prices for me to be looking to purchase S-10 or B-55.

I've bought several colors of B-55, and gotten a good bit of feedback on it so far.  It's not in the same class as the HMPE materials, but it is am improvement over B-500--a little less stretch/creep, a tad better performance (same strand count).  My cost is the same for either one.

I haven't invested in Dynaflight '10, because it would be a huge investment, and I'm not yet convinced there is a noticeable improvement, at least not with the majority of the strings I make.  I've seen a lot of fads come and go, and I don't know yet if the tiny string craze is a fad or not.  I know they only make up a tiny percentage of my orders, and creep doesn't seem to be a problem on moderate strand counts--at least it hasn't been for me.

There's not a huge difference in the price between '97 and '10, but when you are looking at buying 30-40 spools, it's a lot of money.  I'm going to have to be convinced that it's worth the difference.  That, and I've had less than a half-dozen customers even ask for '10.
