What's the sorriest target you've ever seen at a 3-D Shoot? I went to a shoot out-of-state recently and came across this forlorn little deer. We couldn't pull the arrows out without the head falling off!

probably the same type target I practice on at home, after about 3 or 4 hits the head falls off.

We have some "everyday" targets like that but they are left out 24/7. We try and pull those and repair them before they get to bad. If they are really shot out or have been repaired to many times they end up on our broadhead range. Then they are trash.
We have "shoot quality" targets we only put out for our big shoots. You have to have good targets or the people won't come back.

Sometimes the smaller clubs just don't have the funds to up-grade their targets. How were the rest of the targets?

This happened last year during a 3-d shoot on Terschelling (one of the small Dutch islands).
I took a 35 yards downhill shot at a deer. The arrow hit the kill and indeed it killed it. In slow motion it fell in two pieces. It was really funny to see that happening.

They're not really "sorry" targets, but the archery range at Kapolei in Hawaii (on Oahu) had some nifty homemade 3D targets. There were a couple that got shot up and the inner "skeleton" could be hit. You'd hear "tink" and know you just lost the tip of your arrow. There was another that wasn't anchored to the ground well. My buddy hit it and it started swaying, then tilted forward in slow-motion. He's going, "no, no, no, no, no, NOOOOO!!!!" as it falls over on to his arrow and he hears "Crack!" and the arrow breaks.
They had a big, I don't know what it was, a Snuffelufagus from Sesame Street or some Elephanmammothrhinobuffalo at the bottom of this hill. It was like a 100 some-odd foot shot downhill. Tall grass behind it. Guaranteed arrow loss if you missed.
They had another on a long cord that would zip about ground level down a hill for a "moving target" shot.
Kapolei was built on an old coastal gun emplacement bunker complex. Some targets were up against concrete walls. Yeah, miss those and that arrow is a done deal for the salvage pile.
This was 1996 to 1999 when I lived there and would shoot there. Get up early, get breakfast at Zippy's (yeah, local kine breakfast: two fried eggs, two scoop rice, some fried potagee sausage or some lup cheong or fried spam or combo of those), and hit Kapolei before it got too hot there. Then get lunch at some plate lunch place----Loco Moco usually. Or go to Zippy's again for some other local kine grinds.
I miss Hawaii. Especially this winter when we had these blizzards that took a day to dig out my jeep. Used to get on The Bus in Waikiki (we lived on Nahua Street, right across from International Marketplace) with bow and quiver in hand. Tourists found that "interesting" but, hey, I lived there! Get over it! Then go to the archery range at Kapiolani Park. Shoot for a few hours, talk story with guys like Carl and Ralph (anyone shoots there then knows these guys), then jump back on The Bus and go home. Put on swim trunks, walk barefoot to Waikiki Beach, and swim in that nice warm water to relax the muscles. Great memories...

How about just a vital. No head, no rear end, just a vital. At least half the targets at one time. But hey they only charged $5. The club in a gun club with archery and the archery guys have been building the target stock and overall they are better now. Very nice property too.

Here in NW CT we have major bear problems. They tend to tackle the target and chew them apart. So that head being destroyed is a real problem. I found useing moth balls and spraying bleach regularly keeps them at bay.

Joe, maybe you need to join a club or form one of your own and get the targets up to standard. Not many trad clubs close to me. I drive + hrs to sissispaw. ther're targets are better than the one in the pic, but because I like the folks that put on the shoot and have fun, I'd go just to shoot pinecones. Don

Thanks for the memories. I was just there this past April for 10 days, and you brought back wondeful thoughts of "Loco Moco" at Egs and Things. I really liked eating at Ono's too. I didn't get to do any bow shooting, but I took my oldest son (6) night shark fishing, and had a blast.

Went to a shoot recently and they forgot to put one out. We were joking that someone must have gutted and dragged it out.
As someone has already said, funding can be a problem for small clubs. Also, getting an adequate amount of help to set stuff up can be a major hassle. Supporting these clubs is important. If they have turnouts, they'll make money and have support from their club to improve the 3D program.

I don't know about the sorry targets, but I've seen the ugly target. A turkey target called the mile o more bird a good friend of mine made.

At the McAlester OK. shoot , must have been 12+ years ago, they had some "snakes" as a 10 point or a miss target.
The "snakes" were water hoses wrapped around a log. Hit or miss it would probably cost ya an arrow... :eek:
(And,as I recall, it did... :rolleyes: )
