Title: make your own ghillie suit?
Post by: johnnyk71 on July 07, 2010, 01:12:00 PM
has anyone done this? i have an old ASAT leafy suit that has faded after several years (new one is on the way). i thought instead of retiring it, i might use it as a base to make a ghillie suit. has anyone made their own? good sources for materials? any tips would be appreciated.

There is a user on Youtube that has lots of videos on ghillies with both demonstrations on how to make them and on how well they work.
The user is called GhillieArnhem, and here is a link to his profile with all videos he has :  http://www.youtube.com/user/GhillieArnhem
Very cool and informative! Hope this helps  ;)  -SveinD-

Great idea. My asat is also faded and it will make a great base layer for a ghillie.

Gotta say here a true ghillie is not what you want.  That is a full length system with crawl pads on the front, and camo on the back.  Your looking for a shaggie suit.  I prefer to use a long smock type and avoid the leggings.  The hanging threads catch on everything if your wearing the pants.

I just ordered two "face veils/ cover" 2'x3' from ghilliesuits dot com at $18 each.  Have made the same type thing for the last few years and lose them each season (brush grabs them off my pack) and can't make them cheaper given all the time it takes to make them.

I ordered one synthetic green and one synthetic mossy.  Green for Alaska in Aug, and I will alter both to suit whatever terrain I find myself with the bundles of synthetic fibers I have from them as well.

A few zip ties or dental floss attaches them wherever you want.  Also some of those doublesided velcro straps are great to attach to the arms.  Makes you into a sagebush with little fuss, and comes off easy so you don't drag the whole mountain with you...

great stuff, guys. thanks.

i think it will be pretty easy to jazz up my old ASAT suit into a "shaggy" type deal. should be fun, too. i'll post some pics when i get it done.
