Limbsations from onestringer, a sponsor here.  You can get many different wood grains for around $20.

Rub his face along the limb until it smooths out?  Just kidding, I know he was just trying to help.

How deep are the scratches?  A limb refinish may be in order.  The bow maker can probably fix it for you.

fine sand until smooth and then wipe on poly, two or three coats, should fix it right up.

Ouch!  My hunting buddy loves to remind me of the time in 1985 after a bear hunt in Ontario that he was cranking his truck-mounted RV down and I was cranking it up on the other side--we nearly tipped the truck over!  But this bow-sanding snafu.....!  I hope you are able to fix it.  He must be a very good friend to help you like this. I'm sure he feels very badly that he didn't understand the project well enough before he started.

Food for thought??? At times, sanding the belly has been used as  way to reduce draw wt. of a set of limbs   :wavey:      :coffee:

Mongoose... you're going to put finish over the snake skins right? A little light sanding with some 320 grit followed by the same with some 600 and it will cover it right up with whatever you use on the skins.

It usually takes a hell of a lot of sanding and a bunch of elbow grease to get through the finish to bare glass.
