Title: ever doubt yourself
Post by: stevemfwills on July 20, 2010, 05:23:00 PM
Well went out and shot this evening and shot about 40 arrows. As i was out there shooting and not shooting as well as normal,I mean I was in the lungs of my 3d deer never out of the 8,but is statred to doubt my shooting.I have killed alot of animals with my curve and I am so intense in my focus at picking a spot on an animal, but lately I have been doubting my skills with a bow that Im almost not wanting to carry my bow in the woods. Its not target panic cause i really know anything of it,I havent changed my set up at all, just something doesnt seem to fit right..Anyone ever start to doubt their selfs close to season.....thanks

Hell yes!!!
Maybe have someone watch you shoot and give you a few pointers.

Maybe layoff a few days. That helps me.

Your thinking your self out of shooting good.  Quit thinking so much and just shoot.  We can all psyche ourselve into shooting bad.  I just focus on the spot and don't think about anything else.  When I do that I hit it every time.  If I let anything interfere with that I miss the spot I am looking at.  I expect every shot to hit where I am looking.  Thinking about missing almost guarantees a miss.

Don't think about anything, just focus hard and shoot.

Yeah, you may just need to lighten up a bit. Take a few days off. We shoot for fun. Remember, when go out to shoot our bows, we are going out to play. Yes, a clean, ethical kill is a very serious undertaking, but we do it because it is fun!

like Sam said..... just have fun. you dont need to hit a spot to enjoy shooting. maybe it is time to shoot at a blank wall and just enjoy the flight of the arrow.

Like the others said, maybe you just need a break.
Sounds like you know what you are doing and have a ton of experience under you belt so maybe it is other stressors that have your mind wondering.
Maybe just take some time to relax and figure out what that is.  Work on it.

Then pick the bow back up and kill another animal this season. You already know you have what it takes Brother!

Take care and good shooting

I think it's something that more than a few experience if they are over thinking their shooting.

I would suggest that you try just shooting for the fun of shooting at least some of the time. By that I mean shooting without the pressure of each shot having to be perfect.

I would also suggest that you try shooting in total darkness using a candle flame as your target. This exercise takes away the need to try focusing on a spot because a spot is all you can see.(I hope that makes sense) This allows me to shoot without having to think about picking a spot.

Good luck!

God bless,Mudd

All the time. Sometimes you just have to keep pulling the string back with your fingers and feeling the arch of the bow. Passion and desire are things you can't go looking for they find you instead. For me sometimes it takes a new challenge or quest to bring it back. Like hunting a new species, planning a dream hunt, building a bow ect... It may take time but keep at it.

Nothing is going to mess you up more than thinking I "have" to make that shot.

What Brian Krebs said. Forget the deer target and grab a judo arrow. One target, one shot. It puts the fun back in shooting.

We all do at one time or another Steve.....I like to get away from shooting for a week or so and then pick it back up. It usually works for me...something about the time away just seems to help me. I experience the same thing with tennis...suddenly out of nowhere I can't seem to keep the ball in play ..that means i need a week off before I go back to it. Don't get discouraged...you'll be ok

Only doubted myself with the recurve once. I had just graduated from wheels, and had the biggest 8 pt I'd ever had a chance to draw on in front of me. I wished for the wheels at the moment. I drew and shot right over his back.

Sniff, sniff...I'm not quite over that one.    :(

Stump shooting, OR reduce yourself to ONE arrow at a time.

Shoot it...pull it...shoot it...pull it.

Every shot with the same discipline as when drawing on game.

I had a wierd thing happen the other day. At Compton I decided to shoot with my chosen gear, which included a finger glove that I had ripped teh inserts out of just prior. I was disappointed with my shooting, as all my shooting and groups were to the right. I screwed with everything a bit when I got home, including my release and then I just decided to try my other glove and BINGO, arrows perfect, tight, and I am smiling again. Sometimes it isn't you, just can be tough to tell. I guess the glove was stretched a bit and hung on the string just a tad too much...I should have known it couldn't have been me  ;)

If you can't deny it, then how could you ever doubt it?

Every archery will eventually miss. Some more than others and it appears you are missing small. Many good suggestions here. If my shot isn't feeling right I go to the String Bow and practice my form, shot execution, and follow through. (I've explained this so much on this site some are sick of it, I'm sure so I won't bore folks with it again).

I like to shoot blank bales, smaller spots, etc. When I want to focus on my form (without the String Bow) I simply walk up 7-8 yards from the target and WALLUP it. YOu might try putting a tiny sticker or pice of colored tape in the center of your deer's kill zone. See if that helps concentrate your focus. If so, then when you remove the tape remember you have to imagine a tinier spot than you've been looking at.  This is a great technique for new archers. Let them shoot groups without a tiny spot and then give them a spot. It helps them see more of what's possible from an accuracy standpoint. Much of this is just establishing, mainatining, or restoring confidence so you can commit to the shot.

For years I've claimed, "In archery, if your mind wanders, so will the arrow."

Reminds me of something Rod Jenkins said in a video. You do the aiming and let the other guy ( your skills practiced on the blind bale) run the shot.Bad things happen when you start checking up on the other guy. Try the blind bale exercise and see if that helps any. Just a thought.

Well actualy..... NO!

However..... I am EXTREMELY supersticious when it comes to hunting!!!!!

I will usualy practice daily for months in preperation for hunting season. Then, I stop a few days before "Opening Day" (always ending with a possitive group) and I DO NOT practice at all during the season.

I think this goes back to my old compound days back in the 1980's. I would be stripping vanes and busting nocks, then I would go out one day and just plain shoot like crap!!! Now of course it COULDN'T be ME!!! SOMETHING must be "bumped" or out of adjustment..... I would end up fiddlin' with things and get my sights so screwed up that I was lucky to even HIT a paper plate!!!

Traditional archery is "instinctive",If you've "got it" you've got it!!! Then again, anyone can have a bad day. I just don't want to walk out the back door for a "warm-up" before a hunt and find out that I'm having one!!!!!

Thanks to another member on tradgang who told me to shoot one arrow at a time last spring, I have been shooting better than ever, I shoot from 5 to 35 yards, and plan to extend my range a bit more as my confidence allows, never from the same distance twice, I take my shot and then walk back get the single arrow and walk back to another spot and take another single shot, that is the only way I can slow myself down between shots no matter how hard I try, also it gives me time to mentally prepare for the next shot and really helps me to concentrate on my form for some reason. Also, I never pay any attention to the distance I am shooting at, I just let my brain program itself, and taking one shot at a time from different distances really helps me to achieve that. I shoot 21 shots in the morn and 21 most eves, it takes about 35 minutes for one session, I used to shoot alot more within that same time period, but I was not shooting nearly as well, so shooting less arrows is well worth the extra time it takes.
