Title: Help. My PCH suddenly is loud....
Post by: Zmonster on August 21, 2010, 08:08:00 PM
When I first received my PCH it was shooting pretty quiet. I was over joyed. I left it strung for about two weeks, and now when shooting it sounds like a train wreak. I figured it was that the string had stretched, so I twisted it back to 9". Same song, but a little better. I added bow hush and hush puppies, and its still better, but not to where it was in the beginning. What could this be?

Bow is 46# and I draw to 28". Im shooting full length 1535 with 100gr up front. They fly like darts, and hot where Im looking. Are my arrows too light?

I'd think those would be quite weak given that the widow is 3/16" past center shot.  Have you done any bare shaft or other tuning to determine that you are using the right shaft?

ZMonster,
Of course the Brace Ht. as you have noted is the first thing I'd look at. It appears you have gone back to a previously quiet height. Of course you should make sure the limb bolts aren't loose - -I put string wax on my bolt threads a few days ago and it took out a 1st shot creak (Learned that trick from folks on this site).

I use three types of silencers on my strings.
1. String Leaches by Sims.
2. "rubber jack" -- I don't know who makes them they look like an "x" and fit like leaches in teh string.
3. Rubber fishing jig skirts.

Sometimes I combine the skirt and the leaches.

I have to move these around a bit on the string to find the best spot.

Have you been shooting a different bow since laying the PCH down for two weeks?  I have a Blacktail Elite that I hadn't shot for a 10-14 days and when I shot it yesterday I was alarmed how loud it seemed COMPARED to what I had been shooting.

Hope something or someone helps.

Bowwild,

Thanks for the informative thread. I do have that first shot creak, and was worried about it. Almost thought I checked a limb. Ill give the wax a try. Ill play a bit more with the silencers. The skirt idea sounds interesting.

I in fact have been shooting a ACS longbow for a bit in between, but I could have sworn the PCH was as quiet as my ACS, when I first got it. Whats the ball park for the brace on these PCH's?

In the morning I'll try heavier arrows.

Thanks,
 Casey

I would experiment with brace height adjustments a whole lot more.

My PCH is quieter than my other Widows. Sounds like you are covering all the bases.

Is the one thing on my tip that tells me the string needs a twist. What yourprobably hearing is slap. Not messed with widows much - but bet that is what it is.

My shooting buddy has a PCH, wool puffs and yarn on string where it touches the limb...the bow is silent.

I own and have owned a number of Widow's.I've had the same problem in the past.Try this unstring your bow and tighten your limbs. The o rings around the alighnment pins will compress over time. This will make the limb gap around the top alighnment pin a little wider than the bottom. And set up a weird vibration pattern. You may have to do this more than once. Thanks,Jim

If it was quiet with those arrows before, it should be quiet with them again.

Did you record all of your previously good settings?

Nock point and brace height should come right back to where it was before, assuming nothing else has changed.

Limb bolts could have loosened as others have suggested. If they were over tightened there could be a problem (owner's manual talks about that).

You haven't changed your glove/tab have you?

Are you shooting the EXACTsame arrows as before, or are these a new set supposedly of comparable spine?

Could be everything is cool, but your shafts are not like your old ones. Stuff like that happens (either mismarked or out of tolerance).

When running tests it helps to minimize as many variables as you can.

I also have a new PCH and had a first shot creek.  Called BW and Roger said to tighten the creeking limb up.  I did and the problem went away.  My brace is just a tad over 8 3/4.  A heavy arrow does make a difference, though still quiet when I shoot lighter arrows.

Have you waxed your string? Sometimes wax build up on you limb contact points will create some noise. Big Ed

You mentioned that you brought your brace height to 9". Raising the brace height will usually help to quiet it down, but did you know that the PCH suggested brace height is lower than the other TD widows? 8-8 3/4" is recommended.
You might try going down a fair ammount, and then work your way back up.

Kat,

Ill give that a try as soon as this storm passes. Where did you find this info regarding the brace? I looked all over the manual, and couldnt find anything regarding brace.

Zmonster,

If you go to the Balck widow site, and look under bows.  Then click on PCH. Pick a PCH, such as PCHIII, complete bow.  Scroll up from where they ask for the specs for ordering a new bow.
They give all the info. here on limbs, riser length, brace height etc.

I was surprised to see it a little lower myself.  When I got my PCH, I set it to 9", because that was where my PMA, and PSA, seemed to shoot the best for me.

Hope this helps.

What j-Dog said.  New string stretched and needs to be shortened to get back to that sweet brace height.   John

That arrow setup sounds light to me. I have a 44# PCH and shoot both 2016s and 3555s cut to 29" with 225g up front.

Take the bow apart and look for friction spots on the riser footings and the same for the limb footings. Put a small amount of Vaseline on both, put Vaseline on the limb stud pins and put some string makers" wax on the limb bolts and also on the area they receed into the brass washer on the limb. I have been doing this to my Widows for quite some time and I never have any problems with noise. I shoot about a 570 grain arrow, brace at 8.625.

Check lower limb for a slight twist.  Easy to do by accident.  Will cause a pop when string goes back in the grooves as it is drawn.
