Wellllllll
I was going through my totes the other day organizing my hunting equipment and ran across my decoys. I set the deer decoy out and had a crazy thought. Has anyone ever put out turkey decoys while deer hunting as sort of a confidence decoy?? It has been my experience that turkey can see you a mile away in a tree and just wondered if having a decoy out might take some of the edge off the local deer?? Or maybe would scare them off? :bigsmyl:
Any thoughts or suggestions?

good thought I'd say, I dont think it would scare them its well known that dee and turkey feed together.... May have to try it myself.....
that is if you try it first with results. i dont want to take the chance that we are wrong....lol
-
Have never done it but probably would work. Let us know how you do.

Don't think it will work.. they see that 220# "turkey" in the tree stand and get scared all the time !!! ..lol!

That is genius. Turkeys are not common here, but wondering if a couple of crow decoys would calm the deer enough for a clean shot. What do ya'll think?

I have had the same idea with using turkey decoys. I have never seen them together but have had them in same area. Turkey do tend to make a lot of noise. Wondering if a call would help? Then wondering what to tell warden when he says I am hunting turkey out if season!

I thought about trying the same thing.
I have had deer come out and pay me no mind while turkey hunting. They see the decoy, look at it for a second and then go about their business. I have even called while they were 20 yards away and they didn't run off.

There is an article in the new TBM and the author does just that. He puts a turkey decoy in the tree near him and if a deer gets close and a lil' suspicious he starts a little turkey talk and says it calms the deer everytime. He has had deer look right up and after an eyeballing calm down and go about their routine!! Shawn

you need to spray the decoy with scent killer or you may get busted.

I had a friend who while stalking through crunchy leaves would softly call with his turkey diaphram. He swore by it, i've never tried it.

I have thousands of trail camera pictures and not a single shot of a deer and turkey feeding at the same spot. I am not saying it doesn't happen, just that I have not witnessed it. I have plenty of shots with deer and other animals or turkey with other animals but none of deer and turkey together. I actually just went through the last 2 years of photos to see if they were even close to feeding at the same time. I wouldn't try this idea unless somebody can verify it works. Just my opinion.

I've heard of a number of people useing turkey calls to put deer as ease.

Thanks for the tip.

Where we hunt in Missouri we can kill turkey and deer at the same time. We use turkey decoys every time we hunt. Deer come in all the time. It works there.

I have used crow decoys but not turkey. The crows worked very well. Hap

you bet it could work! I have had several experiences with deer literally playing like a dog around my turkey decoys during spring turkey hunting. I mean play chasing it and coming back every time I would give a yelp/cluck.
I tried using turkey decoys while bowhunting. I cannot say I have scored yet but I have had deer feed amongst the decoys on more than one occassion. I live in Northern MN and do not make it down "southern MN every year to bowhunt. This year I will be going down to turkey country deer hunting in Oct with a turkey tag in my pocket to boot. I will be sure to place some decoys out.

I'm definitely going to try it. Can't hurt....Randy

In South West Wisconsin late season in the snow if you can find a sunny hillside you likely always see teh turkeys come in and root around. After a spell, the deer come in ... always AFTER the turkeys. It is hard to shoot the deer because it seems like if I blink a turkey at 100 yards will see me and the jig is up. I was always going to set up a turkey decoy for deer hunting but am scared I will pull in a real bird and then I am more screwed then before!! Man I think those birds can see what I am thinking!!

I read an article years ago about using crow decoys and the writer had great luck with it. I never did try it.
