Title: Mahagony Shafts
Post by: Mike Vines on August 31, 2010, 11:13:00 AM
Well, I got my Veritas dowel maker this last weekend.  I got it with all 3 arrow diameters (5/16", 11/32", 23/64").  Well, my boys and I went out last night, we were able to make 20 more good mahagony shafts.  I turned them down to 11/32", and sanded them to 5/16", and got 6 to spine out @ 70# even, and 6 that went between 65-69#, and then the rest were a mix of 75-92#, and a few in the mid 50's.  It is alot of fun being able to take board stock, and turn it into a shaft.  It was a little nerve wrecking starting off with a real hard wood, next I'm gonna go to poplar.  It was a treat to watch my boys 6 and 5 make some shafts too.

Does anyone have an idea what Poplar spines out at usually?

Sounds like fun.  I have not tried arrow building but would like to some day.
I responded to your post because of your picture.  Holding a Canadian goose and a bow, NICE.

Grapes, the poplar that I just did, after compressing them to 11/32, came in on a low of 46 to a high of 54 lbs.  Only did 9 shaft to check it out, but they turned out great.  Now have to see if they will stay straight.
