Our deer population is way up in the neighborhood and we have been seeing a much higher ratio of does to bucks this year including three that would be "buck of a lifetime" animals. Last thing my oldest daughter said when she left for her senior year of college last week was that she wanted a bunch of lean protein for her apartment freezer. First doe that comes by next weekend is going to the cause. Be safe in your treestands!

ok what an exciting first morning.

I left the yurt at 5:30 am and made the short hike across the road and up the steep  bluff . i have a new ladder location near the top of the bluff. Its very steep but  three old logging roads converge here and  the deer traffic is amazing.

20 yards from my stand 2 deer run off in the dark. Darn!

At 7 am a nice 8 point is coming down the upper logging road, unfortunately, i am a little rusty in the tree stand and get caught moving.

one our later i see several sets up legs coming down the same trail. Three huge does and one buck fawn are on a direct path past my stand.

The first doe looks up and sees me and spooks.
Doe #2 stops not knowing what's up. I try to start my draw and slip on the wet stand and nearly loose my balance. Needless to say the deer didn't stay put for that!

After another 1/2 hour i decide this stand is on too steep of a slope and too near the trail. After lunch it will get moved about 35 yards down and to the right. just below the intersection the logging road bends hard to left. here is a better tree about 15 yards from the trail. i will move the ladder there and let the area cool off for a week.

I grouse hunted this morning on a popular State Forest a short drive north of the twin cities and in two hours flushed 20 grouse and 2 woodcock. Very little hunting pressure based on the number of vehicles at parking areas. Heading out to the stand about 3PM for the years first deer hunt.

Sat pm found me in a new stand but all i saw were turkeys! no tag for them either.   today was spent caping and butchering a big 13 point my nephew killed with his compound. Guess he has to scout for me the rest of the year!

no hunting for me tomorrow, got to be away for a day but then back at it tuesday.

how about a report from the rest of you MN trad gangers?

Spent the afternoon Saturday near Hinckley.  Got set up on the downwind side of a field with lots of sign. I was sitting in my asat leafy suit in the brush.   At about 1830 I hear a twig snap behind me (downwind).  So I wait and hear a bit more deer sounds and finally, I have to look.  I turn my head as slow as I can.  Maybe 20 feet behind me are 2 does looking at me, I freeze, but I'm busted.  Must have been at least 6, maybe more.  Apparently, I was on the trail they wanted to use.  At least I was almost in the right place.  The swamp is really full of water and I think they've changed travel patterns.  I'll be back with a better plan next weekend.

This will be my first trip home during deer season I will not be bringing my bow.... :(   Have some priorities that need tending too.

Dont know how much time I'll have but if you're near the cities give me a holler, maybe we can get out for lunch somewhere.

Although my profile says NC, I originate from northern Mn, but my career as a Marine has kept me from hunting there more years than I like to think about. I wish you all the best hunting. Next year if all goes well, I will be hunting Mn for the first time in 15 years, can't wait.

I passed up on a small buck Saturday night and a yearling doe last night .

Last night an older gentleman on an adjoining  property hit a yearling doe that I will be helping him blood trail this morning.

A teenager home for opening weekend from college hunting 200 yards north of my stand shot a nice 8 point buck that his father and I helped blood trail and recover.  It was a busy Sunday evening in the neighborhood!

Passed on a button buck Tuesday night. I am a meat hunter and it was tough to pass him up. It was pretty warm and I mainly didn't want to have to deal with processing him in the warm weather.

ok so today is one of those days a guy lives for. One where are the hard work in the past just melts into your memory.

I was sitting on the 23 in the stand farthest to the north. This is an old ladder stand the faces east. I added a second portable stand about 4 feet higher that faces south. This is so both a right hander and a left hander can hunt out of it.

I was in the higher stand facing south well in advance of dawn today.  Around 7 15 am I heard what I thought was a deer eating hickory nuts. Just this loud cracking and chewing noise down on the logging road I walked in on.. It went on for about 20 minutes. I could not see the logging road due to the amount of leaves still on the trees. Shortly there after a squirrel goes up a near by tree. It was now about 10 to 8.am  I was still thinking there has to be a deer down there somewhere , with in 30 yards max. Then I saw legs, a neck, a hind quarter and a rack.  It was one of the 8 pointers that is off limits on my place. It is about 115 max. Just a really nice 2.5 year old. He was coming towards me on the trail I walked in on. As he is going to my left I look down on the logging road  and another rack appears. It’s the big 8 point that is ok to shoot. Wait he is a 9 point. It looks like he will come to my right and give me a shot. Nope now he is going to do just what the other buck did and go by the left side of tree. Rats if I was in the lower stand I’d have an 8 yard shot right now. So I  watch him over my right shoulder trying to keep an eye on him and the other buck at the same time. The other buck is 20 yards up above me still feeding when the big boy lays down 20 yards from my tree. Now I really can look him over. He’s got nice mass but short brow tines. He is outside of his ears but not overly long main beams. Good G2’s.

I am suddenly glad I was in the upper stand and didn’t have a shot as I know there a three bigger bucks on the place this year.. He is smaller than the two on the wall in the house, but is bigger than the last buck I shot in Iowa and definitely bigger the Justin’s opening day buck. He will make some else a great trophy, maybe Kayla with her recurve?

It’s now 8:45. He has been laying there quite a while when he stands up and tilts his head back. Stomping his left foot he starts to approach my stand. Definitely looking for me now . Now he is at 15 yards and staring my way. He knows I am here but not yet sure where. He has had enough to know danger lurks near. He turns and walks away. Tourook will have to wait another day for its first kill.

Tourook didn't have to wait long. tonight was a perfect night to hunt in what I call apple alley. 12 yard shot , 50 yard recovery. 46 lb Cascade night Hawk ( nicknamed Tourook)CE Thunderstorm arrows with 200 gr VPA terminator broadheads. I've had several more doe fawns and three adult doe at shoot-able distance this week but for various reasons did not take a shot. I can't identify what it is but unless everything feels just right, I just can't bring myself to shoot. So far, it just hasn't felt right.

Nice doe, good shooting.
I will be taking the plunge this weekend, it will be my first hunt with traditional gear. Unfortunately I haven't made it out yet this year, but that ends today.  I started shooting an old recurve last year, then this August I picked up a BW PSA II from the widow wall forum and have shot almost every day since.

Shot a doe the first night. Passed on a couple does a week ago and a possible booker last friday. Any other year I would have shot the buck but just about five minutes before he came through I had a definite booker(140's) and 2 others come by but no shot. It should be an interesting year!!

Nice shootin'

I finally made it out this weekend. Didn't see any bucks, but I had a lot of action with does and fawns Saturday night, no shot opportunities.  I got pinned up in my stand for a half hour after shooting hours by a nice doe she was hanging out 10 yards in front of me, too bad she didn't come in a little earlier.

Shot a 19# Gobbler with 11 1/2 beard and 1 1/8 spurs sat evening. If I ever get pictures figured out I'll post some. My wife had a buck by her last night but with the 4 pt rule she didn't shoot cause she wasn't sure. 5 minutes earlier would have made a big difference.

I'm just starting bowhunting with my Howard Hill Longbow. I'm in Bloomington. I've been scouting some of the Wildlife Management Areas in Scott County. This weekend will be my first time out truly hunting...at 59 years old. I enjoyed scouting for hunting. Am an old Marine Corps Viet Nam Vet. Walking silently through the woods, brought back memories. I looked down and I was using a silent walking technique I hadn't thought about in over 40 years.

I haven't had a shot opportunity just yet.  My time has been limited since my wife had knee replacement surgery on the 8th.  She's ready to drive again, so things are looking up.

saw a bunch of bucks on my trip home, one nice one.   All in the same 75 yard circle I've shot my last 2 mn bucks in ugg...fun to watch.  Got back to Alaska and received a phone call of the typical hoss that frequents the area on a yearly basis.....one of these years I'll see him!

Good luck!

I just found out I am being sent to Germany from Oct 30 through Nov 20, that just took a huge chunk out of my hunting time.  I am ashamed to say, but I am seriously considering hunting with the wheely bow this weekend as it will be my last chance to hunt for a while, and when I get back the 2nd gun season will be in full swing. =(

I got lucky tonight on this adult doe. its been a strange year and shots have been hard to come by . I was in the upper bluffs of my farm over a 2 acre beet and forage oat food plot. At 4 o'clock a two year old 8 point picked me  up moving. I never heard him coming due the foot of snow we have. I was looking to the east and looked back over my shoulder to the west and he was standing there 40 yards out looking at me. He moved off with out making a scene. 30 minutes later a whole herd of does came running in like its a race to see who gets there first. Three younger ones are chasing each other around like kids in a school yard at play. Makes it hard to kill them when they do that.  There were three adult does and two were giving each other the evil eye. Ears laid back and moving menacing towards each other. As they inched closer I oozed into shooting position. Started my draw just as one lunged at the other . I let down and another doe picked up on the movement. Three alert does all looking in different directions! The closest one at 22 yards was slightly quartering away. I picked a spot and i am not sure what happened but my arrow went in just in front of her hips up in the hollow spot. She took off went 30 yards slowed, went 5 more yards and fell down! she tried to get up and fell again. Lifted her head once and then was done!  I was dumb struck. Two of the other does walked over to her and stood near her. I climbed down and went over and  knelt by her side. I still cant believe it The big VPS passed just under her spine cutting the tenderloins in two and severing the major artery just under the spine.  I covered her with my jacket walked the 1/2 mile down through the bluffs to get a sled and hiked back up to get her before the coyotes found her. Put her in the sled and then skijored down the logging road through the bluffs steering the sled from behind like a plow horse.

Cascade night hawk. Grizzly Sitka's 200 grain VPS terminator head.
