My mate and I were wondering which state has the best whitetail season, in terms of quantity. We read of some guys taking one deer per season (a wonderful accomplishment in anyone's books) and some guys taking a dozen or more. I imagine the bigger tallies include more does. I understand you need to buy a tag for each deer. Also, which state has the longest season for whitetail? Thanks for helping my curiosity!

Hey Ben,
Likely you will get much better responces in a while. That said, in South Western Wi the DNR is trying to kill every deer. We are allowed to kill 4 a day. You may shoot many bucks if you wnat, you just must shoot a doe first. So it could go Doe, buck, doe , buck. that is aday. Tomorrow, go do it again! It is terrible in my opinion, but I will not get into that ... to easy to get flame thread started.
I will enjoy reading responses from others.
Bob.

In many eastern U.S. states whitetail deer harvest regulations are quite liberal. In most of them you can take at least two deer or more per season. Usually, one or both can be an antlerless deer while only one can be antlered. Some states allow the taking of multiple bucks per year.
You'll find the best overall age structure (read older bigger bucks) in states with more restrictive buck regulations. In states where hunters can take many does but only one buck (like here in KY) there are more older bucks in the population.
Per square mile of deer habitat, KY is usually ranked number 2 in the U.S. in terms of Boone & Crockett bucks with 50+ per year making the BC book. However, these big deer are still rare finds and even more rare harvests, especially with archery gear.
Some other famous whitetail states have other reasons why large deer are commonplace. Most have to do with the length and timing of the firearms season. If the firearms season is brief (IL) or timed later than the rut, bucks survive to an older age.
Our season is very long starting on the 1st Saturday in September and ending the 3rd Monday in January. The license fee is $130 for general hunting and $60 for the deer tag. The tag allows two deer to be taken over most of the state. The tag can be used with whatever equipment is legal during the particular time of the year: Archery, Muzzleloader, Handgun, Rifle, and XBow.

Here in Louisiana it's 6 per season.3 bucks and 3 does per person.

Thanks, gents. Very informative. Please pardon my lack of knowledge or "feel" for the topic, but I always enjoy learning bits and pieces.

Here in Arkansas, the deer herd is estimated to be at 1 million plus; we have alot of deer but only certain parts of the state allows one to kill a "trophy" buck; never a problem to see 25 to 40 deer a day in south Arkansas but they are small; average doe down south is 60 to 70 pounds, average doe up north Arkansas, 75 to 85 pounds; we have a 5 month season, oct 1 thru feb 28 with no breaks and you are allowed to kill 5 deer with only 2 bucks allowed;
Come to Arkansas and I will be glad to show you around.............. :campfire:

Ben, here in OH our archery season runs from 9/25/10 to 2/6/2011. We are only allowed one antlered buck per season. Then depending on which zone you are hunting, urban areas, controlled hunts, and by which date, you could actually take a total of 18 deer. It would take quite a bit of time and travelling to accomplish all that. We do have quality deer here due to 1 buck and a liberal doe harvest. Plus the cost of non-resident license and tags is much less than most mid-western states.
-
In Rhode Island you can take 11 deer this season, all with the bow if you wish.
-
Tenn 3 doe a day 3 bucks for the season
-
In Wyoming, we can only take one buck, but in some areas you can take as many whitetail does as you buy tags for. I just looked at leftover tags for my home area, and there were 882 tags left for whitetail does, so if you had the money, you could fill a few freezers. Depending on area, our season starts Sept 1 and runs until about mid December.
-
In North Carolina you get 2 antlered 2 hunters choice and 2 antlerless tags and you can get unlimited antlerless tags but you have to buy 2 at the time and no daily limits.I think some states just want to make more money off hunting.

I can tell you who doesn't  I live there

Here in some counties of Northern Virginia you can hunt an early urban archery season, then the regular season and finish up with a late urban archery season. This year you can legally bowhunt from 4 September through 26 March - 7 months! Now, the urban archery seasons are doe only. The normal bag limit east of the Blue Ridge Mts is 6 per day and a total of 6 per year - 3 of which can be bucks. But, on private lands and some authorized public lands you can obtain bonus permits for does that are pretty much unlimited.
-
the way indiana is set up you're only allowed one buck per season, but antlerless deer limit is done by county not statewide.so you could kill 8 in one county go to next county and kill 8 more and so on and so on.some counties are a limit of 8,some 4,some 3,some 2 and some 1.so if possible by moving from county to county you could take at least 100-200 antleress deer.

Kansas has a fairly good managment plan in place. The archery season starts Sep 18 and runs through the 31st of Dec. A hunter is allowed a single buck for the season and can purchase up to five anterless tags. That said the Dept is trying to maximise the amount they are making from Non-residents right now so the buck tag is $322 by drawing and the doe tags are $77 each. Hope you can make a trip over.

Any of them that have an open season is the best state IMHO. Some manage the herd and some manage the cash flow, but if the season remains open its good by me.

i dont know the facts and figures of deer per mile and what not but in alabama our season runs from oct 15 to jan 31 we are allowed 2 does a day in most of the state a few counties are less and 3 bucks but one has to have one has to have 4 point on one side.no tags no checkin station.just a hunting license res $24.non res $275 and if hunting wma's a $16 permit.pretty sure thats correct

Interesting thread, must be loads of deer in the midwestern & eastern states. Here in S Wyo, it's basically a deer per year unless you draw a special hunt tag of some sort. Our season is basically the month of September....too short.
Probably not a hot-spot for deer hunting but we are loaded w/ antelope and have decent elk hunting.

Ben, the info on this site may help you out.

Not Massachusetts!! :banghead:

I hunt in KY (Home) and Indiana (best friend) every year. Indiana's move to the one buck rule bodes very well for that state as an even better deer hunting location.
-
Thanks, fellows. Real interesting. Good luck this season to all of you!
-
Certainly not Pennsylvania!
We are allowed one buck with either 3 or 4 points to a side depending on the area. And we can purchase doe tags by a first come first served basis. I can usually get one until they run out.
We have an early 6 week season that ends right when the rut is kicking in. The first 2 weeks are hot but we have the woods to ourselves. Then comes a week of muzzleloaders (including in-lines), 3 days of senior/junior rifle, then a zillion turkey hunters for the rest of the season. The few deer we have left are mostly nocturnal because of all the intrusions.
We also have to wear orange most of the time. Even the turkey hunters are allowed to use rifles!
On top of all that, crossbows are allowed this year!
Our late season is for 2 weeks after Christmas, we share the woods with flintlock muzzleloaders. It's a nice time to be in the woods but the chance of shooting a deer is slim.
No Sunday hunting is allowed. Really, really stupid.
We do the best we can and I love every minute I spend in the woods.

Low Country counties in South Carolina start August 15 to January 1. Rest of the State opens September 1 to January 1. Some counties have not limit on Antlered bucks, with plenty of doe days and doe tags.
-
Here in Ga. The season came in Sept 11 - January 15th. 2 bucks and 10 does.Best deer and hog Public land I know of.RC

Ben, I am just guessing, but Barry & Gene Wensel live in Iowa, does that help.
-
I feel like Iowa has it right.
You are eligible for one any-sex bow tag and one any-sex gun tag. Gun seasons do not coincide with bow season unless its early muzzeloader (a week long) or late muzzleloader (3 weeks after christmas). Additionally, you can purchase doe tags (county specific) for as many as the quota allows. The licensing laws are such that each county has a quota of doe tags. Some are as many as 5,000 and some counties have 0, depending on the deer numbers.
I usually purchase one bow tag, one doe bow tag, and hunt late muzzleloader during the cold winter months.
This year my wife and I moved a little farther South due to a job change for myself, so I'm hunting some new land and using it as an excuse to scout and take the recurve full-time.

Second Saturday of September till Second or Third Saturday in February the following Year. There is some Counties that have Unlimited DOEs. So You can get Lot's of meat, But You only get 1 Archery Buck tag (free)and have to pay for any other tag.
-
Missouri and Nebraska allow 2 bucks and unlimited doe tags all over the counter.(Residents) MO you also get two turkeys along with the deer all for the low price of $19. :) September 15 to January 15 although there are all kinds of gun hunts in there and the general gun season right in the heat of the rut in November.

here in alabama its october 15th to janurary 31st 2 deer a day
-
Here in the southern zone of NY state bow seaon runs from the 3rd. Sat. in Oct. to the 3rd. friday of Nov. but their are bow only areas that run until the 15th. of Dec or so. In a bow only area you may harvest up to 4 bucks and 3 does by using all your tag options. You can actually shoot unlimited does in the bow area by filling one tag, turning it in along with the does head and getting another tag. Once ya shoot a buck on the bonus tag you are done. I have killed 17 deer in a year herein NY by shooting lots of does. In NYS it is very complicated so I advise anyone to read all hunting regs. carefully!! Shawn

Ben, one thing to think about is wether you will be hunting public or private land. There is plenty of public land to hunt in most states but lots of other hunters as well. If you can find private land to hunt on there will be fewer if any other people and likely more deer. Missouri would be my choice, 2 deer and 2 turkey tags for less than $200 for a non-fesident, lots of public land, and fairly easy to get to (2 major airports, Kansas City and St. Louis). Plenty of other options though and lots of TGer's to help out! As Shawn L. pointed out, read and understand the regs for whatever state you choose as they can be pretty complicated.
-
Here in California you can take two deer with two tags you buy separately . Each tag is specific for the area in the state where you can hunt, the method of hunting (gun, bow etc), doe or buck, and the length and dates of the season. I usually get a archery only tag that allows me to hunt different gun zones in the state but with a bow. This is for a buck only locally. The other tag I get is an A22 that is an either sex archery only hunt here in San Diego county.
The A22 season starts the first Saturday in September and goes for 44 consecutive days. It reopens the third Saturday in November and goes to December 31.

to add to arklongbow
in Arkansas, we do have a 5 month season, with a lic. fee of 25 dollars resident, 5 deer limit max. up to 2 antlered deer, i have a little diffrent observation in that I am seeing really nice bucks in southern as well as northern Ar. but I am not seeing the numbers he is, with little larger does, i guess just diffrent parts of the state... to bowhunt the full 5 months ya gotta put on the orange or find a management area that is closed to gun hunting at the time.
-
There are no deer in Iowa. ;)
-
Looks like Arkansas is the winner with 5 months?...Van

All most a full 6months for New Jersey
