I got my son in law all geared up with trad equipment this year for his first bowseason. I imagine he will be hooked for life after his first close encounter.  :)

Good luck!

Beautiful morning to be in the woods! Saw 5 different little bucks and probably the same number of does. None of the bucks wore the 4 points on one side to make them legal and the does were just a little out of my range. But what a great way to start off the year, hopefully one of those bucks brings his dad with him this afternoon!

So Saturday morning gets here and I am planning on slipping out back in a little blind I have become fond of. I am not even out of my back yard yet and the "snort patrol" goes off. I am like "No way!", but these guys had me busted before legal shooting was even here. Sounded like three or four,I waited till all was quiet then continued on only to spook one more before I got to my setup. I have to start smoking and use Zest soap instead of this scent free nonsense I guess.

Sat a few hours and watched the sun come up,thank you God,what a sight. Was entertained by all kinds of birdlife, even had a Bluejay fly directly over my head and land 3 ft away. These guys are some of the most skitish birds in Pa. so that impressed me. Time to go......

Fast forward to the evening hunt and I am sitting in a treestand that is just inside of a woodlot, that is bordered by a high weed field. There is a trail that comes across the weed field
and runs just to the west of me.It is a good natural funnel, but nothing usually happens until right before quitting time,so I settle in for the wait. All kinds of birds are on the entertainment channel again, and although I prefer my feet on the ground,it is interesting looking at them from this elevated level.

At 5:00 I hear a loud branch crack in the woods across the field, and I think here we go,showtime!
I am suprised when out of the woods comes a Springer Spaniel but even more suprised when there owners come following them in an ELECTRIC GOLF CART! You have got to be kidding me! I calm myself down, figure if this happens every now and then the deer will not be bothered by it to much so why get worked up. They sit for a bit then spin the cart around and are gone as quick as they came. That thing was silent.

So it is just about 5:45 and I am starting to go into the full alert mode(I am a night hunter at heart)when all of a sudden it sounds like Tedd Nugent is having a gig up at one of the houses at the base of the ridge. Absolutely no way!! This goes on for a full 15 minutes and I am so glad I have this safety harness on so at least when I stroke out I do not have to hit the ground when I fall out of the stand.

All of a sudden I catch movement down below me and when I focus I see that it is a beautiful black squirrel. He is gorgeous, almost catlike. He was heading out the way I came in.That looked like a pretty good idea. I called it a night.

                      Good Shooting,
                                   Craig

Woke up to rain this morning. I don't like mixing blood with water, unless I'm washing my hands.Put my Longhunter shirt on,sat my Filson on top of my head and hiked to the top of the ridge. A mile and a half to the top with the last 200 yds pushing a 14 degree incline lets you know if it is all working or not. Could not tell if the Filson and the Longhunter kept me dry or not.....

This morning was the first time I have been out since the opener. Low 40's and a clear sky. Light breeze out of the west. Perfect. I suit up in a Leafy Suit, pull on some knee high Lacrosse, grab my stool and Dorado and slip out the cellar door.

I do not even get 25 yards and the deer nail me again. Now it is dark, wind from them to me,silent walking in the grass. Unreal. Snorting, carrying on, all kinds of commotion. One continued to snort all the way up through the woods,I had nothing to lose so I snorted and continued into my blind. Got situated and sat and listened...
One out in the field snorting, one out in front snorting, then all got quiet. 1/2 hr later I could hear the single steps cutting leaves coming in just above me with very light grunts along with it.It veered off behind me and I never did get a look.Another doe came in from my left, maybe 6 yards away.Tail at half mast and snorting lightly as she walked.Something was up and she did not like it. Down over the bank, across the creek she went. A little frustrating this morning, but it sure was good getting out.

I do not know what you guys are seeing,I work nights and last evening when I was coming home
A small buck stepped right out of the woods, nose to the ground, and trailed right across the road and up over the bank. Totally oblivious to the Jeep 20 yards in front of him. I had to come to a complete stop. Get ready,it is coming......

                   Good Shooting,
                                 Craig
