I seen 1 last week, gives me hope!
-
I have to work, but will get out for the last couple hours after work. My daughter and I am going to hunt hard this weekend and hope to fill a couple doe tags. Not that we would pass up any nice bucks, if given the opportunity.
-
Hey Chad, how did MO go? Give me a call sometime.
I got a few weeks yet before I go in the woods, no since of rushing it when we have all of November too :)
-
November is toooo far away Jason!
I will be watching the sun rise and set from a stand tomorrow! Can't wait. Just have to pick a stand. They just changed the wind direction on me AGAIN:)
Jason and Chad- you two need to do a booth at the Midwest expo!

Stand and blinds all in. Went scouting yesterday, kind of like a pre-game warm up and moved a stand in the last minute since i stumbled upon a fresh ground scrape 4 foot in diameter. They are using it, cause it smelled pretty. Went out today in the morning and walked into another new area on the farm and kicked out a nice mature buck, he headed to the area of where i moved the stand. Spent this afternoon sharpening broad heads. Will pass on tomorrow but Saturday will hit the woods. Cold front coming down here friday night should be a nice opening weekend. Katie go get em! It sure was a pleasure finally meeting you in person. Greywolf and i really enjoyed our time with you and the little ones. The :coffee: was good, but your company was better. You are one heck of a Ladyhawk. :archer2: Good luck Guys and Gals !!! Game on.
-
never made mo .I'll call ya tomorrow, Jason and let you know how it go's good luck everyone. Chad
-
Good luck everyone and hunt safe!
-
I'm still a couple weeks away from getting serious about bowhunting here in Iowa. But, you all have fun out there!
-
Had a nice opener this morning! Nice doe bedded down behind a tree at 30 yards. She would just not give me a shot. Nice to be out in the stand again!
Vic- glad you got everything ready! I bet your lady is excited to get out and hunt again! Glad to meet you 2 for coffee. Hope to do it again soon!

I had a great hunt today three different bucks within 10 yards and three does. Get to the acorns or anything green. Good luck everyone the rest of the weekend. Chad
-
I sat the opener out.....first time in quite a while. Kids...work...projects...damn I'm getting old!
-
Took my 9 year old Mattie out tonight and we saw some deer most were out of range but when a doe and 2 fawns came down the trail she couldn't contain her self when they got to within about 15 yards and she spooked them off. Big lesson learned for her and she told me after they were gone " dad I just couldn't sit still I was so excited " It was a great eveing for both of us.

That would be a good evening. Not wishing time away, but looking forward to my little ones being old enough to tag along.

I drove through Iowa in August on my way back from Colorado. Iowa was made for whitetails. Beautiful country. Good luck.
-
I had another 6 point at 10 yards. I'm good at getting small bucks in the sweet spot, all I need is a good buck to come by. Chad

Finally, the first night out. This afternoon enjoyed a cool sit over the big scrape i found on the edge of a bean field. After about two hours two raccoons came walking by. Thirty minutes later two more racoons came from the bean field and walked under my stand. Was very excited about this as i will be trapping this place for the first time in November. Right before dark the deer piled out of the brushy pond up the ditch from me and went out in the bean field. Two little button bucks came down and messed around in the scrape. Chewing the overhanging branch and smelling around. Two little does came under me and went back into the woods. Than a doe, the biggest i have ever seen in years came from behind me and walked out in front of me. But she was looking at me all the time and i couldn't move. Me thinking they heard me walk in and came a looking. Sitting up in my ladder stand 10 feet She never took her eyes off of me until she got out to the scrape. And the only shot i had was a butt shot so she lives for another day.

does this count

It was nice to be in the woods, but where I hunted with my sons, the deer were staying in the cornfields for the most part. My oldest took his first archery deer (a doe), but he's still using training wheels. It was still exciting helping him trail and field dress his first deer. My youngest son and I shoot traditional bows, but nothing offered us a shot. It still beats just about anything else we could have been doing. I don't get too excited until late October anyway.
-
That counts doug77!
-
Nice work Doug!
-
Nice shoot on the yot.. I've been seeing lots of coons and small game also ,lots are way before dark. I 've seen several little bucks and deer no good ones yet. Good luck everyone. Chad

Went out this AM to fill a doe tag and all I see is little bucks under my stand.

He was full of questions and as I started to gut her he asked why I was doing that........I said so we can make meat out of her like the meat we have in the freezer. He looked a little closer and said " Ohp Yep I see some deer sausage "
David seen some flys starting to buzz around and decided it was his job to keep them away :deadhorse: - (http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p443/BEH160/2010openerdoe005.jpg)

Congratulations on a nice doe! Seen nothing today but killed a Pope and Young Mosquito tonight at dusk.

I shot a doe in youth season now ready for a nice buck in this season :) good luck to all!
God bless.

I think all the deer went underground, didn't see any deer tonight either.
doug77
-
Doug ,be sure to scout, the deer are on the `Red Oaks` acorns. Get there before their all gone, they won't last long ,and then they move on to the next tree dropping. good luck Chad
-
I've been tied up with work around the house......but..... tomorrow morning! Depending on the wind, I have a date with either a big white oak that dropped a truck load of acorns or an apple tree who's branches are sagging with load. All this rain definetly had an impact on mast this year. Can't wait to finally get out.
-
I have acorn issues. My timber is full of Oaks. The deer do not have to go far to get acorns. They seem to travel the same trails out to the beans this time of year. It just takes them for ever to get to the field because they eat acorns along the way. I plan to move a stand today further down the trail to go with all these south winds.
Had a great doe 30 yards broadside on Tuesday night. I just don't take 30 yard shots on deer. I can hit her fine, just not 100% I would get a double lung with my little draw. Was hard to watch her stand there:(
-
Not very many Oaks in the ditches where were hunting this month. But lots of beans around them to be harvested any day. Since my wife (Greywolf) is still suffering injuries due to her breaking her leg in Jan she can't walk very far. She is dying to get out there. So yesterday i scouted a place fifty yards from were we park down in the thickest brush on the farm. I knew the deer cross the road into it so i found the main trail and walked it until i found three more trails coming into it. Off to the side i built her a cozy little brush blind so she could shoot where they all meet. I cut a lot of little trees down at the ground level so as not to show i did too much. Than i made her a trip proof path down into the lair to the blind were all the trails meet. Than for a extra bonus i made a monster scrap with over hanging branches. Sprayed what needed it with scent killer and added our special scrap juice (two MT Dews strained through Mr Vic, some doe pee, an buck pee)to the fake scrap. And left it to air dry out. This morning i snuck into it to give it a run. About 7:35 hear a snap and looked towards the entrance from the field to the lair. A huge doe was coming along checking out the newly made corridor of death. I let her live so Greywolf can harvest her first deer with a bow. Than at 8:30 i heard Buck grunts down in the bottom of the ditch, but he was a no show. Looks like all systems go for that spot. Now bring on Harvest and more cooler weather.
-
Good husband Vic! Can you call Bryce and give him some ideas:) I would pass out if my husband built me a ground blind. He does hang my stands!
Heading out in the a.m. in hopes of filling a doe tag. Will check in later.
Good luck to everyone this weekend!

As long as the farmers are still able to keep the wheels turning, I not going to complain about the weather.
Hunt safe this weekend brothers and sisters!

2 bucks going after it toinght pretty hard in the corn, they never came out but it was very exceiting for a while. I will be back their when the sun come up tomorrow AM.
doug77

I have had two does, either pairs of yearlings or does with a fawn every time I have gone out this year within 15 yards. I have not hunted in the same place twice, looking for turkeys. They seem to be staying away from my wife. Tonight was the same, except besides two yearlings there were about 30 turkeys. The deer came very close but the turkeys spotted me swinging at the mosquitoes.
-
Today was my lucky day. Had a doe start blowing at me as 6:10 AM and she didn't quit till a little after 6:25 She was in the corn and never came out or moved for 15 munites, man that's frustrating.
doug77
-
Don't ya just love standing corn? Doug had that problem last year. They stayed in the corn most of the season. Now this year no corn and the does all come try to find me after i get up in the stand.
-
Oh Ya Vic that's a blast hunting around the corn. You get the hear all the warning sounds those old does can make. In fact it was so much fun I think I'll go back again tonight.

I've been seeing the first smaller bucks razing and chasing does. Lots of scrap action also. Things might pick up with some cooler weather, although harvest is coming along nicely!
-
If things keep going the way they are around hear, their won't be much crop left by the end of next week.

Three days ago walked into the dark corridor of death. Area named for my wife's blind in the brush. Wasn't using a flashlight as not to spook everything out of there. Silently walking i came to the place where i needed to turn right. Suddenly i hear this growl, than another, what little hair i have left on my head was at attention. I fumbled in my pocket for my mini mag light and got it on. In front of me was a Bobcat holding a small deers leg in his mouth. Crap! The stupid in me made me call his bluff and lunge at him. Don't know who crapped first? But he ran off.. That Morning was a dry run and so was the night. A Buddie knew what little hunting land i have left,(thanks to lease hunting) and the lack of me seeing deer invited me to help him hunt his acquired property. Went out there two days ago and found a spot that made my mouth water, and put my portable stand up. This morning i seen eight does, and tonight i seen one huge doe. All the corn is being picked on the other side of the farm so tomorrow the bucks should be in the brush with me.
-
Just headed out and the corn is going fast. Started seeing more deer this week.
doug77
-
Shoud of grabbed him Vic:)
My place is strange! Nothing is going to plan. The deer, the few that I see, are moving the wrong way:) I have hunted this place the same way for many years. Never have they come and gone the way they are now. I thought maybe it was because my beans are out and the corn across the road was in. Well, it has been out all week and they are still all over the place. Patterns do not exist this season so far. I do have a crazy little button under my stand all the time. He beds down under me! 3 times now. I keep telling myself that he is meant to grow to be a huge buck someday, so he lives!
-
The deer were out and about this morining. Saw 3 does and 5 fawns and two 2 1/2 year old bucks. Was hopeing to does would come close enough but I dropped my tree stand puting it up this AM and I think they kept their distancs from all the noise I made.
doug77
-
I seen a 2 1/2 bumpin a doe around on Sun. mourning and lots of rubs and scraps showing up!!!
The last two years Iv shot my buck around the full moon in October
-
I am hoping to get out for my first time this year on Saturday! The weather doesnt look so good but unless its pouring I will give it a shot.
-
Started trad hunting last year. Had several bucks within 18 yds. Nothing I wanted to shoot at. This year several does the first weekend and 1 nice buck at 22 yds. Didnt feel good about the shot. Sunday had a 6" spike at 10 yds but I am picky. A nice 8 point came out but no closer than 55 yds. Been practicing 20 to 30 yds. Really dont want to shoot any farther than 20. Many nice bucks on the trail cameras.

Nice Buck Doug !! What a way to end October. I been hitting it hard down here and finally seeing deer. Had numerous does under me a few different times and had a monster coming in to me but of course a doe got all the attention and off they go. Moved my stand where they been coming out into the picked bean field, but seems my sights are set on him and letting does walk, for now. Had two does within three yards of me and they had no clue. Pretty darn cool if ya ask me. Last night i watched five small does and two button bucks walk by. On the other end of the field three nice bucks where messing around with each other and right at dark here come the one i want. He got within fifty yards and stood out there in the bean field teasing me. I snuck out under darkness without spooking them. This morning it was 26 degrees out and quiet. One nice buck crossed the bean field and that was that. At 10 am i decided to scout out the end of the bean field, and found three huge ground scrapes and a few rubs. I moved a ladder stand by them and across the small cut i put my wifes portable blind brushed in. Tonight three of us will be laying in ambush for one of those big boys.
-
I look forward to hunting a Hawkeye buck one day soon!
-
WOW, I would probably choke on that one.
-
Nice buck, Doug, congrats on the deer. I have the next 9 days to try to get something done. I went today and hung two new stands. The area was tore up with big buck sign, now all I need is a little luck. Good luck everyone, it's time to get out there and "GET UM" !!!!!! :deadhorse:
-
I just got in from my first time out this year, I had 3 does go by but out of range, and a hefty 6 point at 15yds, I didnt shoot even though my daughter was telling me to ;)
We were ground pounding it, just sitting on a stump and he didnt have a clue we were there!
-
Well where i put my wife's blind has been the hot spot for two nights now. Friday night she missed the monster i been chasing at fifteen yards. He was chasing a doe right in front of her at last light and just missed him under. Than tonight she was back in the blind and i across the field from her. I watched deer play out in front of her last hour of light. Than at the magic minutes a nice eight point walked out in front of her and she miss again. Might i add that buck fever may have added to the moment for her as these are the biggest deer she has seen and the first she has ever shot at with a bow. As i was walking over in the dark to her MR BIG made his presence known to me forty yards away in the field. But way to dark for a shot. I can't believe they are so tame for this area. Of course i never use a light when walking in or out.
-
Keep after them Vic and I'll bet your wife is having a blast.

I have some family in Iowa--I just wish nonresident fees were not so high--but my state charges an arm and a leg from non residents too so I guess that is the way it goes. I also think it takes a few years to draw--whatever the case I may hunt there some day! Looks like a great place to live and hunt
-
I think the next two weeks things will really turn on. I haven't seen much at all since the second week of the season. Going to try some new spots the next two weeks. I'm hunting completely new areas to me since my wife and I moved in July.
-
Oh man Vic, I am bummed and stoked for Grey Wolf. Tell her to keep at it! You are seeing more than me.
Nice buck Doug!
I had a big guy out in the field Sunday night. I tried my best but could not get him to come in. I would still like to get a doe for some meat. Of course I have late season for that. Missed a nice Tom yesterday. He was moving fast!
Good luck everyone!
-
The honey hole is still playing out. Were seeing some nice bucks and plenty of does now. Two nights ago Greywolf was back in her blind with renewed fire. I was sitting in a stand 400 yards across the field from her. Sitting there i hear something running towards me i turn an look and a nice buck is heading for me doing close to 50 miles per hour. As he passes me by i see a bright purple and yellow feather sticking out the side of him. Low behind the left leg in what i thought was the heart area. Than it dawned on me, she just shot her first deer. I watched that buck hammer down never slowing down for over 600 yards heading for the highway. Than my phone rings, she is saying something but i can't understand her as she is pumped. I get down and look and there is no blood. Long story short 1 hour of tracking/or looking that night and no blood, hair, fluid of any kind. So we come home and the next morning i go out and we spend another four hours looking. Nothing. So i'm thinking it was a very low hit and nothing but brisket. Went out this morning and the wool was definitely needed. Had a young 10 point come within fifty yards and than trot away. We decided to give the area a breather and i moved her blind and my portable stand to the other side of the field. Tonight she watched a small doe play with turkeys and it was uneventful until we walked out in the dark. The field around the corner down in the honey hole was full of deer. So after the sit in the morning, guess where she wants me to move her blind back too? Katie, Greywolf says if you get bored up there come on down here for a weekend/winter camping out on the farm and you girls will show the men how it's done. Yes, Doug she is having the time of her life, but of course hanging in the field with me is never boring.

Anybody?
I have been homebound with an injured father and a bum in the woods. The warden thinks we have a drifter living in my timber with a shotgun. So when I do get a break from taking care of Dad, not sure if I want to be in the woods.
Hope everyone else is doing good!
Katie

Shot a nice one in Mo. on the 9th of Nov. 26 1/2" inside in the 155" areaStill carrying my Iowa tags.Have'nt got a shot at one im wanting yet,but have enjoyed some great hunts. Will post a pic. if i can figure out how to.The new Tall Tines sung a sweet tune for me.Good luck to all
-
Hi Katie-
I think your warden needs to get his butt in the woods and figure it out.
I haven't been seeing a whole lot. A group of 3 does and one small 6 pt buck have been hanging around the food plot. A lot of other hunters in the area on the public I'm on.
-
I agree your warden needs to take care of this.
I'm seeing lots of bucks all sizes but the does and fawns are pretty scarce in my hunting spots.
doug77
-
Any updates?
I was out of town over the Thanksgiving holiday so my hunting was put on hold. Shotgun season starts this weekend. Hope to get out with my bow again before the break.
No word rom my warden on my squater. I am guessing that he has moved on. I have found no track of him. When we get a good snow we will see. Can't hide prints in snow:)
Good luck to you all in our last week till late split!
Katie

Came close, Greywolf has been in the hot spot and had close calls and a few misses on some real nice deer. Been a great year better than most, even though we had to do battle with landowners next to us. Seems they think they own all the deer since they bought 100 plus acres next to us. And than want to shoot deer over the fence on our side. Watched a 160 walk across the field for one hour and right up to me, i stared a hole right behind his leg in him for ten minutes. Right after the moment of release my arrow took out a nice little pencil limb hanging out over the field. Last chance i've had to this day on any deer. Than landowner asked us to stay out for the last five days so they can hunt quail, no problem with that since they give us full control of the land the rest of the year. Than weather kicked in, sickness hit for a few days and it's safe to say i'm pretty much done. Greywolf will be sitting in her blind at the honey hole until friday and than the gun season kicks in and you find us hiding indoors until muzzleloading opens. Good luck everyone...
-
Sure hope Greywolf gets one! Tell her "hey" from me.
Katie
-
Thanks Katie she is trying really hard and i'm so proud to have a women who loves to sit in 18 degree weather to tag her first with an arrow. Tonight i took her out to the honey hole. She sat in her blind and i in the truck on the other side of the field. About 4:45 the field filled up with deer around me. 18 does and two small bucks eating around the jeep. Two big does within 10 yards of me sitting in the Jeep. WHAT THE HECK!!! Where were those does when i had bow in hand. Around 5pm A huge buck walks out way down by Greywolf, the bino's show him to be in the 170 class or higher. Real high rack and looked like a foot passed his ears. She said it was one she missed earlier in season. He puttered around slowly to what i thought was in front of her, than dark came. She said she ranged him at 50 yards and no closer as he walked by her. All in all between us we seen 25 deer, an 13 Turkeys feeding in the bean field.
-
Awesome!
My place is dead. Local farmer has been spreading manure in the field non-stop. I'm not sure they will want to eat in the field at all this season. I even have a small stand of beans still in and they have not touched it. My cameras don't even have deer on them. Hope they go to my food plot for late split and do not move off to another timber. I have been caring for my Dad and not been out to hunt much. I hope by late split the weather holds and he feels better so I can get some meat! Stange season for me.
-
Darn Katie, I doubt if the deer will step into that field, been my experience in the past if it's hog manure. You know your always welcomed to come hunt down here, if you can get free. Wishing all the best for you, your dad, and family.
-
My update goes like this......opening mourning I started the season out right with a 17 yard smoker and things went down hill from there. I shot one more button buck but after this last Fri. night I decided to hang up the bow for the rest of this season....I hit a doe and didnt find her and she was the last one of several for this year :knothead:
This is my third year with trad. and man it put me in my place......my first two years things went great but this year..........I decided i need to be doing more of this :archer:
Good luck to all who still have tags!!!
-
Best part of the season is fast approaching after gun season I'm really hopeing for snow. I did manage to get a couple of does although 1 the yotes got to before me. I shot her about 30 munites before sundown and wasn't sure of the shot so I waited 4 hours and came back and easily found her but their was NOTHING left of her. First time I've ever had that happen.
doug77
-
I went out tonight, only the 6th time out this season, been to dang busy with kids and bows. Tonight it was anything goes and I had 3 does at 20 yds, I was half drawn on the biggest and prayed for her to take one more step but instead she winded me, let out a snort and they all took off. I knew the wind would be wrong for my local spot but I had to try, it still had my heart racing! According to the weather man I will be playing in the snow tomorrow night with the wind the right direction! If it dont work out tomorrow, I will hang a stand after slug season, I have been on the ground so far this year.
-
(http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h58/buckvalley/005-2.jpg) This is a picture of the buck I shot two weeks ago. He's not the biggest buck I saw this year, but he was one of the oldest. He's a 130 1/8" seven point. He field dressed 205 lbs. I was very happy with this deer.
-
 Congratulations on that nice buck!! Anytime you can harvest an older wise Iowa buck, you've done something to be proud of. Lots of eating on that beast....
-
That's a fine deer Chad, congrats.
doug77
-
Nice buck Chad!!! Congrats!!! I haven't loosed an arrow yet with my LC longbow. I've been close a few times tho. Still the prettiest bow I've seen. Thanks again
-
Nice buck Chad!!!

Very nice Chad!!
-
An old 130" or a young 150", I personally have more appreciation for the older animal. Nice buck man.
Been a rough season in my neck of the woods. I went into the season with my regular tag and 3 doe tags, still have them all. Indications are that the herd numbers are really down in a lot of areas. I seen maybe 1 doe for each 4 small bucks during the rut. Passed on probably half as many small bucks this year as in other seasons. All in all, regarding deer numbers, it's been the poorest season in probably the last 16 years for me. Sounds like our deer biologist is getting hammered with reports of low numbers. They are finding there are still "areas" with a lot of deer, but these are limited access areas. So, hopefully look for some regulation changes next season. Word has it the Thanksgiving doe season will be gone, along with drops in antlerless quotas. We will see.
I've yet to kill a good buck during the late season, so I look forward to giving that my best.
If anyone here has concerns on what you've been seeing in your area, be sure to contact our biologist Tom Litchfield. The more those DNR boys hear from us the better off we'll be.
IDNR biologist Tom Litchfield [email protected]
-
Yes, I agree the deer numbers are lower in some areas. I have always found that if I stay close to the river, there is always a decent population of deer. I hope to see some changes in the Thanksgiving season, and the late winter rifle season. Thats the dumbest season yet that our "DNR" has came up with. I still have a good number of deer as of right now, but they are spotty.
-
I'm with Morning Star the deer population is the lowest I've seen since moving to Iowa in 1999. I have seen way more bucks than does and even have one place that I hunt that the land owner asked me NOT to shoot any does.
doug77
-
Mike I will be sending Tom Lichfield an e-mail

Great job Chad!
Talked to the Warden yesterday. He said he is having people complaining all over Warren Co about the lack of does. Not seeing many fawns either. Maybe the bad winter was real bad for the deer. He also said he has found no sign of my driffter. The Warden believes he was just passing by. Hope he is right!
I was told last night that a dump truck hit a buck that scored 236 on the road in front of my place while I was gone over Thanksgiving! No proof of this at all. I sure hope not. What a sad ending for a monster buck.
-
One more thing that doesen't help is I've never shot a coyote with a bow and I've got 3 this fall. 1 got into a giant brush pile, 1 had mange and 1 is getting tanned. Hunted for 30 plus and never killed a yote and then get 3 in one year, whats that tell ya.
doug77
-
I think in large, the antlerless management plan we've been under is the biggest reason for what's happening. That's good and bad I guess. Good in the respect that we have shown the State how effective we are in managing our deer, but bad in the respect it is not a perfect science and we will experience what we have now on the down sides of the plan. I think the populations will cycle in more frequent highs and lows with this type of plan.
There are so many factors in controlling the deer herd, some are just out of the State's hands. Between the refuge type properties and properties that get to much hunting pressure, we will see the conflicting reports in some areas.
Katie, I also agree that some recent winters have caused some mortality. I have heard the talk of winter kills also.
Doug, thanks for emailing Tom. We do make a difference! I've seen it happen.
And hey, I'm seeing the same thing in areas I hunt. Man, the coyotes are thicker than ever! That has to meen some fawns are getting drug down. I've really got an itch to buy a high power and start tip'n some of those suckers over this winter.

Got to agree numbers are down, my father and brother are seeing less deer to very few in their areas.I feel the only reason My wife and i are seeing a fair amount is the fact that the ground to the east is now off limits to hunters from here. Owned by out of state. The ground to the north is leased to out of state, the ground to the west is "NO HUNTING and the ground to the south has little to no cover. Now that the pressure is on most of the area deer go to these safe zones. Were lucky in the fact that we have the only crop ground. I Just mailed off the DNR report on animals seen during bow season and it sure shows a huge decrease for the hours i spend in the field from what we saw last year. And this year i've heard more big guns going off in the evening and it started a lot earlier than years past.

Anyone out for late split!
I made it out once this week. 3 deer in my food plot. The plot is close to being done for the year. I passed on all 3. I went out in gun season with my patch and ball and was very successful. Now I can get picky.
Merry Christmas!
