I have been itching to buy a Widow PCH, but I already have .... let's say 6 (or more) bows on the rack. Please let me know what you think about your PCH. I have owned a Widow in the past, but I sold it due to the noise factor.
I have some bows to sell, but is there any reason I should not get a PCH????
Brett
-
Umm...because you have six or more bows in the rack...
:saywhat:
-
About 10 bows ago I said "No More".that was 10 bows ago.WHEN you get your new Widow let us know how you like it.LOL! For sicknesses like ours refer to Danny Rowans post, all the best my friend.
-
Thanks for the tip Steve!!!
I guess it's just a matter of time before I plunge back into the Widow market.
Maybe I can get some input from some PCH owners???

Brett
I have never shot one { I have owned several Widow's and passed them all on to others }. However, I remember reading how alot of guys could not wait to get their hands on one when they were first anounced.. Now I already see them often showing up in the classifieds :scared: I would never consider selling one of my Schafers to get one :wavey: :coffee:
-
Widows are super sweet bows for sure.I see you have a Schafer on your rack.No need to have a new bow then.Done. :)
(Hey you said talk you out of it...) ;) :readit:
-
I like my PCH, and I like my Silvertip (soon to be Silvertips). I don't think mine is a noisy bow. I just use a pair of fur silencers.
-
With the proper care all BW become a quiet as any other bow.Replacement of the stock string is a must anyway.See all the threads about that.
-
For the price of a new bow you can feed a kid in an underprivileged country for at least 6 months and maybe even buy his sister some feminine hygiene products for school so she doesn't have to miss class, and they will send you a picture of those kids and there progress. Hang the picture where the bow would have gone. :goldtooth:
-
I don't know the names or initials of any of the BW's but the recurve model I hunted with had everything humanly possible done to it to make it quiet to no avail.
I happened to run into Ken one day so I cornered him to pick his brain as to "How to quieten" this bow.
Ken's words to me were, "Mudd I don't know what to tell you other than we made a noisy bow that year." and "You;re just going to have to hold really low Kemosabi cause they're riding shetland ponies!"
At that point I returned the bow to its owner and said I was sorry but I wouldn't be able to kill a deer with it. I already had 4 or 5 misses on deer that had dropped below the arrow before it arrived and I knew I couldn't count on me looking at the ground below a deer to shoot at it.
This is just one case and one person's experience with Widows but it is mine so I won't be trying any others.
I'm sure there are others with wonderful stories to tell that are just as genuine as is mine.
Good luck, good hunting and God bless,Mudd

I've owned 3 MAs and a LAG longbow, still have 2 of the MAs. They are my second-favorite hunting bow. They are not 'whisper quiet' (compared to my Hills), but mine are pretty darned quiet. And I don't use rubber limbsavers, moleskin on the limb grooves, yarn wraps on the string or multiple sets of silencers.
I believe the 'loud' reputation comes mostly from operator inexperience with bow tuning, and somewhat from the built-in stereotype that Widow's are loud ("I read it on the internet so it must be true").
They really aren't much different than most other bows, you just need to tune them.
-
I can get most bows very quiet, but never could get a Widow anywhere near quiet enough. I've had two, and ended up selling both because of it. I wonder if the argument between loud and quiet (some say they are "silent") has to do with ones release? My release is far from great, and perhaps that causes problems? But, then again, no problems with noise from other bows. :dunno:
-
lpcjon2!
-
I only have one widow, a PTFV. It did seem loud to me until I traded the FF string that was on it with a B50. I used Hush Puppies and Bow Hush on the B50 and it's very quiet now.
I plan on stopping at Nixa later in the week on may way back home and try a PCH and PSA. I was going to do the test drive but ended up in Kansas and Oklahoma this week so if nothing changes I'll be able to stop instead. I'm all a flutter!
I can't see any reason at all for you not to get a PCH if you can swing it.
-
You can never get a Widow guiet, that is why no one ever kills anything with one.
Reread TSp's post.
My PCH is quiet, so is my PSA and my PTF. Now I have a Shrew foam/carbon that is giving me a fit to quiet - but I will figure it out.
-
I will try to talk you out of it. My widows were not all that loud, they were very fast, they had a tolerance for a wide variety of arrow spines, they were very accurate, BUT they have a less than desirable balance, the grip is to high for real fast shooting, they do not aim like a longbow when they are canted, you could take your wife out to dinner several times for the price of one. Then again if you do not shoot fast, like to hold a bow more vertical, and shoot with an open hand. At times I wish I still had my 66" BW, the one with the sights on it that I held vertical and shot with an open hand, it was fun stacking arrows at 60 yards, of all the widows I owned it was my favorite. Honestly, how would shooting a bow that is that different from what you have effect your form?
-
Got money? Got room? Got hospital coverage for when the little woman sticks her foot in your behind? That's a noise hard to get rid of...for me anyway.
-
I have a PSR X and PMA III they can be as quiet as any other bow if you do your part. I got a coyote last week a 3 yards with my PMA and the arrow was in the groung before he moved.

Just sounds like a left handed way to do one of the Widow bashing threads so common over on the other site. My Widow is as quiet, and smooth and fast and pretty as any of the other makes out there.
If you really do have one ordered, keep it! It will probably be better than all the others you already have.
-
One reason I want a new Widow is the Asbell grip. It is the best grip that I have found on any bow.
I bet with an SBD string and some decent wool silencers the noise issue will go away.
I'm still considering it as a Christmas gift to myself or something like that.
Brett
-
went through the widow phase then i found another to love.then another, and so on..widows are quiet as long as you use bowhush and hushpuppies on them.theres nothing cooler looking than a well dressed psax with wool socks on. :clapper: my osage psax was as smooth a recurve as you could hope for.
-
My tip is that if you have a lady, ask her, then do the opposite^^
If you're not taken, I hear Widows make great wives :D
-
Since BW changed their limb design with the Precision models several years ago, they are every bit as easy to quieten as any recurve out there. I have a PCH, a PSA, and a PTF. They are all extremely quiet. I will say that the PCH is my favorite because of it's short riser and being a takedown with the PTF coming in close second.
I get soooo tired of the threads on the other site saying BW's are too loud, too expensive, too ugly and so forth. I never see another bowyers products bashed similarly.
-
I have three , a plx 2pc quiet as a mouse, psa III 49 lb super quiet and a pchx 60" 51 lb Super quiet also , ive owned 7 in my life all of mine are quiet , i put limb savers on my curves a set of beaver fur silencers and a single pair of spiders (from widow ) near the tips makes em wisper quiet , the screaming arrow makes a sizzeling noise (lol) all of mine were bought used on this site and i LOVE ,em ,have tried all kinds and like em all but !i personally love mine. thanks for letting me throw in my two cents . chuck. oh yea 9 grns per pound too.
-
Having 6 bows has nothing to do with it. Need has nothing to do with it. If you WANT it and can swing it, DO IT!
-
CHICKEN!!! BOK!! BOK!! BOK!! BOK!!
How was that for talking you out of it?
:goldtooth:
-
I like the looks and idea of the PCH. I have a PSAIII -58". If I didn't own the PSA I'd buy a PCH. My widow is very quiet with just a single set of whiskers installed.
If you think the single Silvertip you own is enough...(I have my 1st Silvertip on order) ...the PCH might be a great next bow for you!?
I see you are also missing a Rose Oak Super Wildcat and is it simply a glaring typo that there are no Blacktails listed on your post?
-
I was at the black widow factory last spring and shot the pch. It was great. quiet (even indoors) an very pointable. Go ahead get it you know you want too.
-
I have a 54" PCH and yes with the string that came with it it was LOUD! Put an SBD 10 strand D10 string on it with bow hush and hush puppies and it is whisper quiet. I really like this little bow.
-
I'll take the Hoots and the Tolke off your hands for free. Thats how nice I am. Then you will only have 4 and feel MUCH better!
-
Whitetail Chaser I have a new PSAX and have shot the PCH . For me the PSAX was a better fit but neither bow was noisy , no more than any other recurve Ive ever shot .
-
PM SENT....
-
I see you have a Sapphire. Just use it.
-
I have had a couple of older Widows that I needed to quiet down, however I now have a newer PSAX that is very quiet. My Morrison albeit I love it is louder than the PSAX.
-
I have a 20 year old MAII. Prior to the CNC models. It is a little noisey, but shoots great. Very accurate for me, but starting to get a little heavy in pull weight.
-
I have shot a couple....they were very nice!!!
-
This post is great!
Never been a Widow fan myself. If you get a BW over a Silvertip, please dont say so. I'll have to kill myself.
Whatteva ya get....shoot it well! They are all fun.
-
only becuz six is an even number. not good.
-
I've always been fond of the "beware of the man with one gun" mentality.
We're talking bows in this case but you get my point.
-
I shoot mine with a skinny string (8125,10/12 strand padded to 20/22 strands), no tip protector and just cat whiskers left long. They seem to be plenty quiet that way. These are recurves, I have one long bow set up the same way. It wasn't noisy to begin with. If I'm carrying one afield I sometimes keep the tip protector on and pull it off when I shoot. When I bang one of the tips on something it is the top tip usually anyway, they seem to be bomb proof though.
-
I have been able to get my last 2 Widows plenty quiet.A 60 inch PTFX and 62 inch PA.New string helps, bow hush silencers, heavy arrows.Around 11 to 12 grains per pound and about 9 inch brace height.
8 strand astroflight with built up loops to 16 strands.Quiet and stable shooting.Very nice!
-
I've been shooting Widows for a long time, and with proper attention you can get them as quiet or quieter as other bows without putting a ton of stuff on the string or limbs. I have never shot the PCH, my main bow is a MA and my back-up is a PSAX. Both are set up with the spider silencers, 8.625 brace height and I use at least a 550 grain arrow. The only time I notice any noise coming from the bow is when I break form and torque the string. I don't see why the PCH would be any different.
-
I didn't mean for this to be so concentrated on the bow noise issue. I know that Widow's can't be that noisy because there are thousands of dead critters that have been killed with them.
I like the PCH because it looks like it has some mass in the riser, and I could get it in a 58 inch model for a nice compact bow.
Still need to thin my bow herd a bit, but I think I'm steering toward a PCH in the future.
Brett
-
I've got two SA111's and absolutely love them .I put SBD 10strand D10's on them and it made all the differance.I just can't think of anything to tell you about not buying it,OH you could feed the hungry in some far off country for 3 hours,YEA RIGHT! Get the bow!LOL.
-
Brett you may not want to hear this but I just aquired a new psa2 graybark 56# @ 58" w an asbell grip. That bow is a tack driver,It shoots a 720gr arrow with authority and was the easiest bow I've ever tuned.OK maybe I'm no help sorry.I would just get the bow.
-
I guess I should bring this up to the top since it has been many months since I started this thread.
As most of you know, we have been flooded with awesome pics of PCH's over the past year or so, but now I find myself still with no Black Widow bow (my own fault) and considering a longer PSA or PMA.
I have a 62 inch Silvertip recurve that is an awesome shooter. I should be wonderfully satisfied with it, but (like an idiot) I can't keep from wondering what a 62 inch Widow would be like. I had a 60 inch PAX that I sold, but I'm trying to get my hands on a 62 inch bow to see if I don't like it better.
I have bows coming out my ears, but I just wonder how smooth a 62 inch PSA or PMA would be.
Oh yeah, I draw 29".
Any thoughts?
Brett
-
I draw 29 1/2 and my PSA is 60". AWESOME!!
-
Brett, since you brought this back up, I'll try and make you feel better.
I have been wanting a PCH in the worst way for a while. I have shot several and have detailed notes on exactly how I want to order it.
Getting to exactly what I want has been a blast. I have shot every model Widow in all kinds of configurations thanks to the Trad community, and it has helped me narrow it down to the most minute detail.
Now that I know exactly what I want, it is pure agony saving up my nickles and talking myself into parting with bows that I am very fond of.
As others have stated in this thread...if you can do it...DO IT.
The only way I will try and talk you out of a PCH is to make sure you try them all before you send in that order form.
Mine is filled out and waiting on my bank account to catch up. Can't wait to call Toby and get that perfect piece of wood picked out of that pile of....well...I'll just keep that to myself for now.
If it helps at all, I shot 2 PCHX bows back to back at Baltimore. I draw 28 1/4" and wanted a 56" bow. I shot one as well as a 58" bow that was very close to the 56". I could shoot the 56" as well as the 58", but to me...the 58" felt much better.
If I was not going to hunt from a ground blind, I'd consider the 60" PCH 'cause I think it would be silky smooth like a 62" PSA or a 64" PMA. Like you, I dig the Asbell grip.
-
Raineman,
Thanks for the support man. Making a $1200 investment in a bow is not for the faint-of-heart.
I have considered doing the PCH test drive with a 60 incher, but I have not gotten that far.
Right now I'm trolling for a 62 inch PMA or PSA or SA or MA. I don't think a 2007 Widow performs much better than a 1997 Widow.
I have 56 inch recurves and 62 inch recurves as well; to me I just shoot the 62's better. I guess I still have the 56 inchers if I want to hunker down in a ground blind or something.
Keep the advice and opinions coming. Tradgang is a wonderful forum.
Brett
-
I have a 64" PMA, a 60" PSA, and two 58" PCH's.
I really enjoy the 60" PSA the best, but that wasn't your original question.
I think of my 58" PCH's this way; The riser on a 58" is 2" shorter than on a 60" PSA. If you buy a 58" bow, you are getting the same limb length as you would have on the 60" PSA. I like to hunt with the shorter bow, and still have the feel of the longer limbs.
By the way, I have two 58" PCH bows because one is my go to hunting bow, and the other is the backup hunting bow. The confidence I have in them is that good.
Good luck in your quest.
-
I have a CH III (no black phenolic--all wood) and of the 4 Widows I have owned since 1999 this one shoots the best, and they were all (TF, SA and LAG plus CH)shooters so that's saying something. My SA and TF were both 56" AMO, and so is my CH but since the limbs are longer (shorter riser) the draw and shot are smoother. You can get a Widow pretty quiet, but it takes a little work to find exactly the sweet spot for the brace height and the string silencers. Well worth the effort IMHO.
PS I keep swearing I'll buy no more bows, but it's all part of the extreme fun of this pastime!
-
My PCHX is the best bow I have had so far. I think you will be very happy with your order.
-
I shot a PCH at Cloverdale, and really liked it. You may also consider a PA, I had one with an Asbell grip, and really liked it. There was a 62" model in the classifieds a few days back, not sure if it is still there.
-
i have a 62 inch pma2 59lbs.i draw to 29.5 inches.smoothest bow i have ever shot.i wish i had another one.
-
I recently sold off my only remianing Widow .... but I sold it close by so I know where it is in case I want it back.
I have shot the PCH, and I have resisted getting one .... SO FAR. I will tell you that if I would buy another Widow today, it would NO DOUBT be the PCH. 58" and 55#s would be a great middle ground I think. Like BCWV said, they are in my opinion louder, but certainly not unbearable, and tinkering with the brace height will help quite a bit in the noise factor.
-
I've got a 60" PCH III on order right now, so I'm not going to be much help talking you out of it.
Can't wait!
-
My Widows are the quietest that they have ever been, a Tall Tines made them that way.
-
Just change the serving. The sure grip serving makes all bows noisier.
-
I also draw 29 and shoot a PSAX got 2 sets of limbs for it. 56" and 60" I shoot the 60' mostly (others are for blind hunting)
Noise has been an issue, tried several strings, d97, 450. I put a b-50 on and it is as quiet as any long bow I has shot. May give up 5 FPS but that's nothing compared to a loud noise. It is smooth and very nice to shoot.
-
Brett you sold me the best bow i ever owned. I am still in your debt for that. That was until i got a PCH its smooth, fast, drives tacks and is the quietest widow i have ever had. You won't be sorry. TD.
-
I know the answer to this one! Go ahead and buy the Widow, then whichever 6 of the 7 bows you decide not to shoot, you can pack up and send to me. I'l even do you a favor and cover half the shipping for ya. :biglaugh:
-
Sorry under-privilidge country, sorry to get off topic, but we have enough here in our country don't send it elsewhere!!!! Now I say take the 1100 or so and buy 2 bows from a number of other bowyers, like RER who start at about $550 and their Arroyo is very similar to the widow you want and performs better as well. Nothing wrong with Widows but as I said, 2 for 1. Shawn
-
Other addicts are the best enablers. Go for it.
-
I have shot all the BW bows and had a couple PSA's. I don’t like the sound of them with the stock string. I have found the PCH to be the best all around package for me. It was also the quietest BW recurve I have shot when set up right. I had a PCH with some kind of FF string about 8 strands. Could have been a 450 or D-97, not sure as it came with the bow. I tried a SBD and that didn't seem as quiet to me. Whatever that string was, with a about a 4" strip of cat whiskers torn in half to make two 4” strips and one each end of the bow at about 1/3 points it was hunting quiet. I have had some other popular recurves that were no quieter than that PCH.
-
Shawn-I have seriously considered the Arroyo, and almost bought one a few months back. I guess I'm just set on getting a Widow.
Right now I'm trying to buy a used MAX from 2006 that is 62 inches long. I've read that G.Fred article "The Case for the Longer Bow" one too many times, I guess.
Brett
-
I have two widows -- a sa and a pch. I also have a great plains swift and a k-mag. I do not find the widows to be noier than the other bows I own or the bows of other shooters at the range. For me the SA has been a little more forgiving, but that maybe because I have been shooting it for a long time. The PCH however is a very sweet bow. At 54 inches it has very little vibrationn and is quieter than the SA. I like both of them very much.
-
Just do it, life is short, you can always dump one of the others.

Shooting your own deer with a new Widow $1200 :scared:
Shooting your own deer with your own, bow, made by your own hands, priceless :bigsmyl:
Hi Brett
-
Maxwell, Have you EVER said NO!!! Can you even spell it?
-
You should buy 2..
So I can feel better about myself and all the bows I bought over my 18 months of being a Trad junkie. :bigsmyl:
-
I traded a Trad Ganger for a PCHX just a couple months ago. I already had a PSAIII and a PAX. I like the PCHX better than the PSAIII but the PAX more than the PCHX. All 3 are great bows with super feeling grips and dead-in-the-hand shooters. Noise isn't an issue with any of them for me. With my eyes shut I'm not sure I could tell the differenc shooting any of these 3 -- they are all three within 2-3 #'s of draw weight, LH and 58" long.
I was surprised how much more I like the one-piece (PAX) than the TDs.
