Title: Bear hunting
Post by: Lee Lobbestael on November 16, 2010, 10:49:00 PM
My buddy is looking for a good outfitter to go bear hunting at with trad gear. He lives in Michigan so somewhere in the north is preferable! Any suggestions?

Bear Quest with Tom Phillips. Quebec the last two weeks in June, all trad and the best time he'll ever have with a bow in his hand.

I've hunted in all canadian provinces except British Columbia. I prefer western Canada over eastern by far. No black flies! Ontario, Quebec, even Maine, etc. the flies were brutal.Once you get a bit farther west, the mosquitos( not many!) are the size of pelicans but that makes 'em easier to swat! GET REFERENCES!!!! Manitoba was great, I didn't know of Manitoba Stickflinger then, but I would think its a safe bet hunting with a fellow trad ganger, looks like he has great color phases. That is a HUGE bear in his pic.
I'm heading for Alaska next September to hunt giant blackies feeding on salmon in the streams(spot and stalk) and try a secondary crack at a moose. Self guided, so there will be a lot of work to do...but I'm finally going to ALASKA!!!!!

Eldon Jandreau (Hunters Point Guide Service, a sponsor here) runs a great bear hunt in Portage, Maine.  I've been five times.  He is a devoted longbow hunter himself and a great guy to deal with.

I have been going to Burntwood Lake Lodge in Manitoba. We are 100% with archery.  This year I took the family and had a great time.  My 82 y/o uncle shot his with a bow also. Fly in lodge with all the fishing you can handle.

Bear Quest with Tom Phillips is a great hunt;  bring your Thermacell for the bugs!

Where else can you have Bowdoc as the camp cook?

Check out "Traditional Adventures VI" from Bill Langer Productions, Bill's a Sponsor here. Plenty of footage from Bear Quest III with Tom and the gang from the 2009 hunt. You even get to see Bowdoc in action        I did the 2010 hunt and plan on doing 2011. It's the BEST! I'm sure the others mentioned are great hunts but from a driving standpoint from Michigan this hunt works the best for me, I don't like to fly.

Squapan mountain Outfitters is a great place for
Maine bears. Great family running the business. They know how to make you feel welcome.

If you want big bears and lots of color phases, go with Ryan. Class act guy. Ryan knows what he's doing. Check out his videos on this site.

I will second all the positive things said about Ryan (Stickflingers) here on this thread and any others. While I ended up NOT hunting with Ryan in Manitoba and went with another outfitter, I can't say enough good about him. The advice and suggestions he gave me over a period of months prior to my hunt in Manitoba back in 08 were incredibly helpful and on top of that, you just won't find a nicer guy than Ryan - with a great sense of humor as well. You will definitely NOT go wrong in booking a hunt with him - he knows bears and he knows bear hunting with a bow.
