hey guys,i just had to post this to get your thoughts on the subject.here lately i have bought alot of bowhunting equiptment.i have had two selfbows made and bought a Marc ST. Louis static recurve.i also had a dozen rivercane arrows with knapped obsidian heads and a elk hide quiver custom made.also a armguard knife combo from farr west and skullworks.i also have bought a few dozen arrows from various makers, not to mention tons of arrow shafts and components for arrows i have built myself.i am now going to have a sheepeater spirit made for me.i know i have a problem, but now she is putting a thousand dollar a year price cap on my hobby.what do you guys think?is she being unreasonable? :help:
-
Well,I guess if you value your wife's company you may have to cap your spending. But if your going to shoot self bows and such you need to learn how to make them yourself, heck of a lot cheaper than having them built for you. Even the leather work you can do and have a decent product when your done. I just tell my wife that there's a lot worse things I could be doing...lol! :dunno:
-
i have tried to make them,i just don't have the talent.i do value her company, she just don't know how generous her price cap is.i am a good boy that loves her very much.she knows i could be into alot worse stuff.archery is my only vice.i think i can live on a grand a year.
-
You can buy a lot of great trad equipment for a grand a year!! Waiting list for most top of the line bows is at least a year, and price is usually less that a grand!!!
Sounds like a good woman, capping you at $1,000.00!! You better keep her! Most wives would say $1,000.00 period, that's it.
-
A grand a year will buy you a LOT of toys. Think about five years down the road, then think about 10. I'd save my money and use it for hunting trips rather than toys.

Is she being unreasonable?
Nah. One good bow (which you already have) and a couple hundred arrows per year. You're gold.
Last bow I bought cost me $80 and it's a joy to shoot.
Be sure to save $100 or so for hunting licenses.
Seriously, I don't know your finances or budget. If you are able to make ends meet, have your credit cards current and the mortgage is being met maybe $1,000 is tight.
If you spend more than you make, have nothing salted away, have the cards maxed out, have 59 interests and your paycheck never makes it home - maybe she's a saint and overly generous.

Kind of reminds me of that song about the fisherman getting told by his wife that if he goes fishing one more time she will leave him. I believe the title of the song is "I'm Sure Going to Miss Her". I already spent $2300 on bows this week, and I bought a 600 dollar rifle scope today.
Sure if you are prone to giving her ultimatums, then she has a point. If not then she is way off base.

I know guys that have a lot of fun shooting and hunting for a lot less than that a year. heck I am one of those guys

You could start with a thousand, then buy, sell and trade. If you keep looking around you could pick up some used bows at very good prices these days and hold on to them and when the demand goes up you can sell them and make you money grow.
-
I couldn't do it (nor would my wife make me). We save as we can and try to plan for the future, but I have no intention of taking it with me and unfortunately, we don't know when that will happen. I might have it backwards, but I'm going to enjoy it while I have it.
BigJim

does that include hunting trips?
-
Actually, it sounds like you have married a wise woman. Time to teach her how to shoot and hunt.
-
It would not be hard to spend five thousand a year. Many of us with limited funds just learn to be creative and spend based on the biggest bang for the buck. We have just as much fun an in some cases even more because we have poured out our heart to have what we have. Thus we devote more time to these limeted items. We can always dream as we but find true enjoyment and blessing in what we have.
-
Sounds generous to me.
-
You can only shoot one bow at a time. Are you spending money on stuff that you realy need? are going to realy use? Should the money be going for mortgage ect.Is she having to work so you can go play? Boy we can be hard on people can't we. I think I would rather have a good wife than a flashy bow.
-
Was that a $1,000 an Month? Or a WHOLE YEAR?????
-
If I had $1000 a year to spend I'd make all my own hunting stuff and buy a plane ticket to Colorado and an either sex elk tag for the early bow season.
-
$1000.00 and keep her!! You do better then me budy!!
Cheers
-
hey guys i think i will keep her.i think a grand is plenty for me to play with.we don't have children,we don't have a mortgage.i have one credit card that is no where maxed out and all of my bills are paid.i know i have bought alot of stuff lately, but i am almost done.i just wanted a longbow, recurve and a selfbow or two.i am going to take the rest of the money and take a nice hunting trip, steve

It is all relative to what you can afford and your other needs. My wife will not spend a dime on herself for something. I have to practically force her to get something for herself. With that in mind, I wouldn't spend $1000 a year of household money on archery stuff. A grand a year is not bad for a limit at all. Plenty of bows out there for way less than that used in like new condition. I mostly sold off stuff I had like some guns and stuff I didn't use much to get trad archery stuff. I have three bows and have had about 20 the last couple years and didn't spend anywhere near $1000 of household funds on it.
She didn't say all hunting did she? A lot of stuff for hunting is really not necessary archery items.
Now does this yearly limit start January 1? There could be time to stock up before the new rules take affect.
-
These threads are always funny to me because everyone always responds based on their own financial picture. A thousand dollars is nothing to some and everything to others. I never respond because I never want to offend anyone unintentionally.
BUT>>>>>did you just say you don't have children or a mortgage? :saywhat: It's time to ask for a bigger allowance... ;)

I think to live in a Land of freedom where my own wisdom and my incomes can dictate how much I can affort to spend for what I like.I haven't ever questioned my wife about her own money, nor I want her to controll my own. Some years $1000 were much more of what I needed some years I have spent that money Jan the 1st.
-
gregg dudley expressed my thoughts exactly.
-
Please post pics of bows, quiver, and arrows.
-
Don't forget you can always put archery stuff on your birthday, Christmas, and anniversary gift list then take back all the junk you get and don't want to buy more archery stuff. That can add up to a good little bonus to your spending limit. That works for me. I keep my catalogs marked up all the time. My birthday and Christmas are coming soon. I have my 3rivers and Kustom King catalogs all marked up.
-
Really?? Are you kiddin ? I can't believe that was posted ! Wow !!! :banghead:
-
Just buying without regard to her is not gonna work.
Having said that, it needs to go both ways. Does she have a 1000 dollar shoe allowance? Hair care? Manicures? You get the point.
Wise man say, treat her like a thoroughbred and she won't be a nag.
-
If I could spend a grand a yeAr on archery, I would be happy.
-
Why tell her what you spend?
There's an old quote..."my biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my stuff for what I told her I paid."
:knothead: :knothead:
Really honesty is the best policy.

I'd be grinnin all year.
People would think I'd lost it.
-
Take the grand, once set up you are golden and its just toys after that. Then the grand will take care of you easy.
But if she's a great wife, and it sounds like she is, I'd take 500 of it and buy her a bunch of stuff. Or like somebody else said, give you both a grand. But both have to stick to it.
-
good god man!!!! i'd die if i was tapped out at a grand a year.i think i might go through that in a couple months.but my woman never told me how to spend my money either because we werent married.notice i said werent.that woman spent more on shopping than i ever dreamed on bows i tell ya,my money too. :bigsmyl: now i'm single again and once things get back to normal up in hea i'll be a bow buyin maniac again. :D ...a grand isnt to bad though.thats like a nice new bow every year buddy.pounce while the pouncin's good.you can build bows just keep tryin and one day it will just click.
-
If thats your only vice then your set . . . it would be rough for alot of us if our better half said 1000 for our hobbies, heck that ain't even some good mudd tires . . .
I just don't have to worry about it at all cause I'm broke :biglaugh:
-
I think you're lucky. In October I was given notice of no more archery or camping equipment until March 2011. If I break arrows or rip a tent, too bad. No replacement buying until March. The decision is based on a single income with two handicapped children, and a mortgage as well as the other debts that go along for the ride :bigsmyl:
-
I'd feel like I hit the Lotto if I was able to spend $1000.00 a year. I currenty spend about a 1/3 of that.
But than again, I don't have the want-too's to have a new toy every six months. I'm a one bow, one gun type of guy and I like to build all the stuff I can for myself.
-
If I spend $500 a year I would be amazed.
-
A grand is OK if you don't take a trip out of state, don't buy any equipment, hunt barefoot and naked, and if you manage to strangle something with your bare hands you will have to process the meat on your own, and dry it in the sun since you won't have a freezer. :bigsmyl:
-
I actually surprised myself. Looking back since I was 15 to present it comes out to a new bow, or new to me at least, every 4.5 years!
One great thing about archery is that it is scaleable. You can make your own for free on up to paying through the nose for custom gear with loads of options in between.
Used to be garage sales and pawn shops had recurves a plenty - now it's that *bay place.
-
It seems to me that I have most everything I need now. However, the gas getting too and from hunting spots is a killer. If you add that into the budget, it would take 1/2 the allowance.
-
If you've got your bows... $1000 will go a long way. I'm sure you slip from time to time.. just remember.. "You have to sin before you can repent"
-
I agree with BigJim.....you bust your tail making the money, and you can't take it with you, so I'm going to enjoy all of it that I can while I'm here and able.
PS....my great wife agrees with my thinking.
-
guys i just want to say that i work very hard for my money.i have never been rich either.me and her have been together for a little over 20 years.she also gets every thing she wants,no questions asked.she is the greatest gal a guy could have.she said finally that she was just kidding me about the limit.she also said that she would never try to limit my spending or tell me what to spend it on.i would never do that to her either.she knows how much trad archery means to me.i have one more bow to buy and i will be done for a long time.thanks for posting all of your thoughts, steve
-
But pretty soon she won't want you hunting as much either. I could be wrong but you could be doing other things that are alot worse. Hopefully it all works out for you.
-
Well good to hear seabass, I wish I could find a gal like that. I guess I spend to much time in the woods.LOL
-
dirtybird,i got with her when she was 16 and i was 18.i was a hardcore outdoorsman at the time.i told her that i might go fishing at 4 in the morning without warning and if she wasn't into that she had the wrong man.i told her that i didn,t want to hear about it later.she agreed to stay with me.she has never complained about it one time.that was 20 years ago.she has never complained.she is a great girl.i work very hard an provide her with everything she wants or needs.she doesn't have to work and can come and go as she wants.the world is her oyster.i'll bet that we have had only two disagreements in the 20 years that we have been together.i guess i am very lucky.thanks for all your comments guys, steve
-
$1,000.00?
-
My wife wouldn't suggest such a budget because she knows two can play that game.
That number would have had to work for me (actually much lower) for most of my life but thanks to blessings from Him, I'm able to indulge myself a bit more these days. That budget you mention wouldn't have worked for me this year and with a couple of bowyers slipping around South America, Africa, and the coast of Oregon for some exotic woods, it won't work next year either. However, I have high hopes that 2012 might be a breather -- unless I draw an exotic tag!
-
bowwild i am glad to hear that you are doing well.if you draw the tag,you just have to chalk it up to fate LOL.this past year has been tough on me.i was layed off for quite a while.i am a union drywall finisher and because of the poor economy it has been rough out there lately.the good news is that i am back on track with lots of overtime.the bad news is that it is cutting into my weekends.a man has to do what a man has to do.that is if i want that new bow.you either have time or money.i never get the two together.anyway good luck to you, steve
