Title: Coffee on stand/blind
Post by: stringstretcher on December 09, 2010, 06:08:00 AM
How many of you take coffee to your stand and drink during a hunt?  We all hear about the smoking and chewing and such, but have not heard a lot about coffee drinkers.  And if you do, in really cold weather, what is a good cup/thermos/mug to use to keep it really nice and hot? Especially you ground blind hunters?

I think the problem with coffee is not the smell but the movement while drinking and pouring it in.
Especially as you tend to drink smaller amounts but more often. Just like with cigarettes the main problem is not the smell but the movement while putting it in the mouth and lighting. Just My 2 cents.

I usaully have 1 cup at home before I leave , but I also bring a thermos with me for after the hunt . Unless I come out to my vehicle that's about it for me - because if it is cold out and I'm drinking anything = too much whizzin' ! Lol !!  :D

I'll take if on a really cold day, when I'm planning on staying on stand all day----or at least as long as possible.

Have shot 2 deer and 1 coyote that came in while drinking the stuff. The coyote came in to about 12 yds while I was on the ground behind a huge fallen tree-----I was freezing and just poured my cup and had to find a place to set it before it ran off.......

Just move smoothly/slowly.....I use a small bullet thermos; once you open it though, anything you don't drink the first time, won't stay warm for long! Soem people read on stand, eat lunch, etc.... just keep an eye out and enjoy!  :coffee:

I think the Nissan thermous is the best - or at least best I have used.  I take a bullet thermous of coffee with me on every morning hunt.  It really helps take the chill off when I pull mine out of the backpack around 10am and if it is full it will remain HOT for many hours.  I painted mine with textured bedliner spray in a rattle can but that's really not necessary.  Also, there is nothing better than finding your buck and sitting down to enjoy a cup of coffee while you reflect and give thanks.  Just a ritual I do.

Thats one of the problems I am looking to solve Ben, is a good device to carry, use, and keep coffee or any hot beverage for that matter hot during the cold days.

I have a bullet thermos now that has a type of pop-up lid. It has an insulated cover, but the inner cap is  vented. I don't have to unscrew the whole cap, just pop the center up, pour and re-seal. This works a WHOLE LOT better than my old 1.

However, can't tell you who makes 1 like it, as My employer gave them out as a safety award or something.......might want to look for something similar.

I like coffee but if I'm sitting on stand, my thermos probably has hot chocolate or hot soup or (here's the weird one) hot lemonade / Tang.  Coffee works to dehydrate you which makes staying warm a bit more difficult in the long term.

Feels good going down though.  :D

Amen Bob.  I always have coffee for a morning hunt, it's part of what makes it special, and is a little "reward", i.e. "O.K. another hour and a cup of joe, then another hour, another cup of joe!"  Only thing I do different is that I take a separate small cup with one of those sip through lids and a handle.  Seems like the deer always come through when I'm holding the cup so this way I can quickly hang the cup onto a peg of my tree instead of trying to chug steaming hot coffee!

I am a serious coffee junkie,It's all I drink. I pass coffee beans instead of kidney stones.   :biglaugh:  I cant go to the jon with out a cup. I think the deer have a respect for the coffee and yes I drink it on stand,on the way to the stand, coming out of the stand,You get my point.

Coffee in my treestand? Absolutely!
Nissan/Thermos Backpack Bottle is the best. Period.
No pouring into a separate cup. One hand opening and closing. Dripless drink spout.
If there is a downside it's capacity (16oz) but it does fit in my Bison Gear Haversack bottle pockets.
Pre-heated with hot water it will keep coffee hot a long time.
It was shiny buy I spray painted mine with the flat Krylon camo paint.

I can take a photo if needed but this is a no brainer. I have given a half dozen to my hunting friends as gifts after they tried to take mine.

I don't in a tree stand.  I could see it in a ground blind where you have more area to set stuff down and organize.  I have too much stuff in a tree stand as it is, and I find deer always show up when I don't have my bow in my hand 100% ready to shoot.  I have missed out on to many shots due to that to add having to put something down before I can even get my bow in hand.  A pull top bottle of water is all I carry, and I don't drink a lot of that on stand.

I don't drink coffee on the stand, but when I hunted ducks I had a big silver thermos with a red top that was guaranteed to bring ducks in when I brought it out!

Had to give up caffeine. Now I have a mug of decaf laced with fiber supplement in the morning. Ahh, the pleasures of aging.

I like to take a Thermos when it's cold.  There's a certain amount of luxury in sitting back in a ground blind sipping a hot cup of strong coffee on a cold day.

Bowhunting from portable, no, not enough room.  Ground blind, yes but hot chocolate.  Rifle hunting from roomy enclosed tree stand, yes, hot chocolate.

I use and old 1 pint Thermos.

I love coffee but no drinks or food with me in the treestand. Not enough room and too much movement. groundblind would probably be a different story. Then their is still the issue of the after effects of the coffee. I do all of my eating and drinking at the house / camp before i head to the woods.

I am a coffee fiend, and I love to have it on a long cold hunt.  However, I seldom stay on stand more than two hours or so.  If I am planning on it, I'll take my old Stanly thermos.  It's big and clunky, but it sure works.  I know the smell must not bother them because they always show up right after I fill a cup!!    :D

Kinda like setting your fishin' rod down to grab a sandwich.

At some point you will reach the stage in your life where the length of time it takes your body to process coffee diminishes considerably.

I don't drink while in my stand because 30 minutes later I have to put it somewhere.

There, did I state that delicately enough?  Coffee makes me have to pee.  ;-)  When hunting I have one mug to wake up and then (hope) to dispose of it at the edge of the woods far from my stand.

I've got my little 1 pt. Nissan/Thermos stainless bottle and if I am "on the road" I leave it in my car so when I get out of the woods I can have a hot cup.  Usually, I hunt from home and Wifey knows to have a fresh pot on when I hit the back door.  What luxury.

Yep.  I take a small thermos along.  I sit dark to dark during the rut here in November, on a small hang-on tree stand.  That's 11 hours or so, and the temps are usually below freezing.  A little shot of Joe every three hours or so, and a couple of cookies, and I stay comfortable and content.

No doubt that deer will pick up the aroma if they're downwind, but if they're downwind, there going to smell me anyway.

They do have an uncanny ability to come by right after I've poured a hot cup.  I've had to stuff the cup into my pocket more than once to prepare for a shot.  Coffee isn't too hot when it hits my skin after going through several layers of clothes. What's a guy to do     :dunno:    :)

YOU-BET!!  I hunt to enjoy the hunt and there is just something special about sipping some hot coffee on a 20 degree morning watching the birds and squirrels do their thing as the sun slowly rises, always checking all movement for deer. Its the closest I ever get to church but gives me the same feeling. I've learned to be very organized in a tree stand and move very very slow.

Love it.  Take it or water to the stand depending on weather.  With all the blood pressure meds I take it doesn't make any difference...  I am gonna pee several times during a three hour or so sit any way.

Yes - on stand - or a blind - worth the extra space ittakes in a pack - - - For the first month of deer season and spring hog hunts it is Iced Coffee. Hot or Cold though it really helps me stay on stand extra hours. This year on some morning hunts I was on stand till noon - that from pink light befre the time change - and it did produce shots - amazing how many deer pop up after traditional hunt hours. Coffee, snack and a pee bottle. 1 Pint Thermos - could drink more for sure - but that gets me through a sit.
Chippewas and Lone Wolf stands only. I manage if from a hanging double fanny pack. Look ALL around - then pour a cup and drink it down quickly - no sitting around sipping.

First off I love my coffee and hunting does not interfere. All my hunting is Spot and Stalk.I was in a tree stand once and got a nosebleed,so never again.Between my spotting and stalking coffee breaks happen ,either a thermos or I make a hot cup with my mini Alcohol stove poured from my main water supply. To me its all part of the experience.

I shot a deer the year before last while standing on the edge of a trail with denim jeans and a denim jacket on and drinking a large dunkin donuts coffee in that white cup,,,,, had a 56 smoothbore with me but it was late season and I heard them before they really got a chance to see me so I didn't sip the coffee when the deer where on top of me I actually crouched down and set it on the ground.. shot the doe who was with 4 other deer @ 48yds and picked my coffee back up and chirped my buddy,, was very convienent.

I killed my first buck just after eating a Honey Bun and drinking some coffee in my tree!

I've pee'd out of my stand and it smelled like coffee. Deer have walked right under me and were curious but never spooked.

So who wants to buy a bottle of my own special brew??   :readit:

I absentmindedly carried my coffee cup with me one morning to my spot, I couldn't figure-out how to climb with it so I left the cup at the base of the tree.  Sure enough, I had a deer come right up and sniff that cup for a while before wandering-off.

Maybe I should set my cup where I want the deer to stop for a shot ...

While I spot and stalk....Sure. It might be an all day deal. I drink coffee and water, eat a little jerky or some cheese and crackers. I love it.    :coffee:   :archer2:

In a blind or tree stand....No. It's hard enough to retain the cup I had when I got up. I don't want to have to disturb my setup with a potty break.   :nono:

I drink it straight from the little thermous - no need for the whole pour it into a cup and all - just tip her back and take a sip.  If a deer strolls in I set it down into the top of my pack that is hanging right there.  Never had a problem.

Since Nissan bought Thermos, they've had the best bottles by far - as someone said, heat them up with hot water for 5 or 10 minutes before you put the coffee in and it'll stay hot into mid-afternoon - or for those of us who drink it like like it was about to be outlawed, at least 'til mid-morning.

It's funny this thread showed up because about a week ago I took coffee out to the blind with me for the first time.  I wouldn't take it up in a tree stand but a ground blind is fine.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I got home and told my wife how I didn't see a single deer but it was one of the most enjoyable relaxing hunts I have ever had , sipping on my coffee.  I have a stanley thermos that works great.  I have found that if you put some boiling hot water in the thermos for a few minutes before you put your coffee or hot chocolate in it, it will stay hot alot longer.

Always take my Nissan bottle with me.  By far the best thermos bottle out there.  In fact I have all three sizes.  16, 27 and 34 oz.  Usually the 16 oz on the stand.  Doesn't take up hardly any room in my pack and as others have stated, there is nothing better to warm you up than a sweet cake and a cup of coffee. Never had a deer spook that I know of from the smell and I have killed several deer while drinking it.

I love taking a cup in my camo travel mug with me especially for a morning hunt.

The problem is about an hour later it needs to come back out of me.If I plan to sit for a long time or all day I'll have a cup before leaving out and drink water the rest of the time.

I never drank coffee or ate in a stand until two years ago. I got a small bullet thermos for cabelas with a green rubberized out side and I got a camo case on a shoulder sling at a garage sale. As far as coffee obsession goes I like to take it to the next level and I buy Green coffee beans from Sweet marias website and have a small home roaster.  I roast all my own coffee and yes, there is a difference.  The reason coffee tastes bitter is because it is stale and coffee starts becoming stale in days after the beans are roasted - in hours after they are ground.  If you do not know the roast date you are most likely drinking stale coffee and if the beans you are grinding ar oily(have a greasy shine)they are burnt - this preserves flavor longer but is not the best flavor by far that the bean could offer.  Also, there are some great coffees from all around the world and most are surprised how many great flavor profiles come out of a great cup of coffee.  My favorites are Central American coffees for the chocolate overtones but lately I am into African beans that have a very bright, fruity profile.  Fresh roasted coffees are very much like good wine and every bean and every year can offer different profiles with some better than others.  The only big difference is time - coffee does not get better with time like many wines do.
Bow hunting and great coffee - not much better in my world!

I pretty much always take coffee with me if its cold out. I use a regular old Stanley thermos and it works great. The movement can be a problem, especially if you forget to move really slow. I don't think the smell is an issue. I always figured if the wind was such that they could smell the coffee, then they could smell me so it didn't really matter.

Kevin - Kopi Luwak is over rated to say the least.  I have bought a few pounds on more than one occasion(Green) and roasted it myself and another time in my friends comercial sample roaster to see if we could do a better job and it just doesn't stack up with some of the really good coffee's in the world and it is wayyy over priced.
Esmeralda Geisha from Panama has been #1 cup of excellence 4 years running and you can get a pound of that for about 35.00 vs 100+ for Kopi and the Geisha is one awesome cup of coffee

Couldn't go to the stand/blind without it. The Thermos/Nissan are the best "thermoses" I've ever used.

My wife wouldn't stand for me taking a Geisha hunting either.

Diddo to the most of the above.  I use the small nisson type with a flip lid and no pouring.  Did I mention it is friggin cold up here.  Just when I start to shake and swear I have to get down before I get hypothermic, I drink four or five ounces of steaming tea (switched from coffee a couple of years ago to decrease my caffeine intake... nerves) Its a miracle.  Have been doing this lately and I am better able to stay on stand to see those late morning cruisers ( or should I say bruisers) :)

Always take my coffee in the woods with me, no matter what the weather is.

Well, shoot,Bob Urban went and did it....he told about roasting and grinding his own beans and as I had been thinking along such lines I just had to go and ask more about it and started looking on the net.  Now I have an order in to Sweet Maria's myself and am going to try my hand at it--just not happy with the stuff I've been buying at the super market.  Way to go, Bob!   :D

I like to stock up on coffee at my bud Frassettor's.  I even have my own cup!   :D

I need to look into one of those 16oz travel jobs, I do like my morning coffee - so much so 16oz may not be enough.

A friend down in IL had a thermos that was covered in neoprene camo.  Silent (no clanking in the pack), soft to the touch, and worked great!!  Need to find out who made that one.

Crazy you mention the neoprene,  I just stopped over to a friends house and he had a pack of little sheets of it hanging in his garage.  He had just bought it to put on a few of his hunting things.  I remembered reading your thread so I purposely stared at the name and address of the company.  Now that I am home I am drawing a blank,go figure.

I used to have a brass canteen that was carried in a canvas pouch, military.  I made fresh hot tea with stick fires, I shot two deer from my favorite morning tea break spot while the kettle was on.  I lost it somehow, and have not found one like it since.

I always use a pre-heated stainless steel vacuum bottle with a wool sock around it.  Seems to last me most of the day.

just when you think about getting down a cup of coffee and a payday candy bar and you are good for a while longer. had a friend that smoked so much on the stand that every story started off with i was smoking one putting one out or lighting one. he always had good stories.
