I know this has been done before, but I just like to see good ground setups. Done a search without much luck! Any help? Thanks' Jason

Brush in back is as important as brush in front. Anywhere can work with a good ghillie.

Here are a couple of my ambush spots. I like to keep it simple.

Thanks' fellas, I love to hunt on the ground and see what kind of hides I can make. It's always fun to get'em close. Even if you dont kill one it's still a rush!! Jason

Here is the deer's view of one I used years ago.
A view from the inside where I set up. The blind was on a food plot. The food plot was made on an old log yard so I built the blind behind a dirt pile the dozer pushed up clearing the land. I used a pick and shovel to make a level spot for my chair behind the blind
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/hunting%20stuff/100_0612.jpg)
Here is a view over the top of the blind and the plot I was watching.
The blind was the shoot through type with four shooting ports like this.

Here are some of the ones that I have used recently. Most of these pictures don’t have me in them, but the Ghillie suit that I wear is in the picture along with the camo netting that I use.
The Ghillie is a Rancho Safari and the netting is an 8’ x 10’ military style net that I bought at Cabela’s. If there isn’t any foreground cover, I’ll use the net to cover the Double Bull chair that I sit on. That way there aren’t any dark holes under me. The rest of the netting is used to create background cover that I can blend into. The netting and the Ghillie work pretty well together.
Here is a picture of a natural blind before I got setup.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1292165252.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1292165252.JPG)
Here is the same blind with the Ghillie and netting. I’m not in the Ghillie it is propped up on the chair.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1292166094.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1292166094.JPG)
Here is a close up of the same setup.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1292166170.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1292166170.JPG)
Here is a different setup. This blow-down has a perfect little pocket that I can sit in. It gave plenty of foreground cover but not enough background cover. So all of the netting was used to create background cover.

Side view
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1292166702.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1292166702.JPG)
This setup was the first one where I was able to see myself in the Ghillie. This was a little pocket of cedars next to a pond. There was no foreground cover and the background cover had a few holes in it, but with the netting the background filled in nicely and I blended in almost perfectly. My arrows stand out like sore thumb and I think the facemask needs to be dyed but other than that it looks great.

Gatekeeper, Those are some cool pics! Nice setup! Jason
-
Wow,those pics are inspiring cause i have'nt prepare ground blind much, thak you guys for sharing. Some comercial camo show their products on the ground but sometimes you wonder if it's a good place to shoot a bow from, thanks again.
-
You guys have some cool set ups good pics
-
I have an idea for a couple but it will be next year before pics. I have some areas with thick honeysuckle that vines over everything. after the deer eat it down this winter I am going in and building a couple of blinds with a chicken wire frame in the honeysuckle, it should climb over the wire and fill in nicely.we will see.
-
I killed my biggest buck to date out of this blind. It has shooting ports cut in the front and is facing a major funnel in a hardwood hollow. I drew when the buck went behind the white oak in the far left corner of the picture and shot him when he came out the other side at about 5 yards.

I know I have posted these several time. I have not taken any new pics of some of my new set ups. Any way, here are some pics of set ups I have used.
This first one was just a blow down with no modification.
This one I'm just tucked behind a couple of old fallen tree trunks that were perpendicular.
This was just a mess of sticks I put up against some other fallen branches. I shot a deer right after taking this picture out where the camera is. You don't need much to make it work. Just sit still.

These are some very good hides.
Double Bulls and the others are nice, but these are already in place, a little work, and you are ready to hunt.
Nice pics.
-
In reality I'd be a step back in the shadows. Virtually invisible.

This spot was a sweetheart for elk and deer in Western Wyoming. Use of natural cover and a Torges tree seat.
Even when still hunting, breaks or periods of stillness are best near cover of some kind. Become the tree. ;)

Great pic's guy's! Jason
-
I really enjoyed seeing some of your set-ups,it encourages me to get out of a tree and hunt on the ground like I did before I discovered how much easier it is from a tree stand.
-
What is interesting to me is that I have had my best success at getting close in "blinds" that have no cover at all in front of me but excellent back cover. Makes me feel naked to be sitting or standing there with deer under 20 yards in front of me and absolutely nothing in the way of cover in front and they do not seem to be aware of my presence (assuming proper wind). Our tendency is to want to hide behind something, but background cover coupled with no movement works quite well.

Took advantage of a huge old white oak that had fallen in N.E.Oklahoma. No less than 5 different trails met within 20 yards of it's root wad.
When ever there are deep shadow I make use of them. (http://www.tradgang.com/upload/charlie/onstand.jpg)
Hollowed out a willow bush to make this one. (http://www.tradgang.com/upload/charlie/Shootin_laneR.jpg)
Here's the veiw from a spot in a down tree in Texas. Not a lot of cover, but enough that I killed my best hog ever the first time there.
Sometimes it's just hangin around being comfortable in a spot. Zero movement is the best camo.

Cool pictures Charlie!
This one really caught my eye. (http://www.tradgang.com/upload/charlie/waterholejavie.jpg)
I’ll be chasing these guys for the first time this Feb. :goldtooth: I’m really intrigued by these critters.

Looking forward to setting up more ground blinds this next year. Hopefully I'll get to use them when season comes around.

From Charlie Lamb:
This spot was a sweetheart for elk and deer in Western Wyoming. Use of natural cover and a Torges tree seat.
------------------------------------------------
That Torges tree seat is one of the most usefull items I have. I throw it over my shoulder/neck almost every time I go hunting, whether sitting or still hunting. About the only time I don't take it is when I know I'm headed to a elevated tree stand.

Nice pics everyone! Looks like fun!

Gun season will be over in a couple days and Wyatt and I are planning on trying for some of the late season deer near the house.
The Timber Company has butchered the woods right in front of my house and property. I hate that, but we'll try to make lemonade. With it opened up I can sit and watch deer moving to and from their bedding/feeding areas and locate their trails by just watching. I've narrowed it down to some good travel trails where there is a bottle neck through the new cut. Late in the evening, they filter accross the opening somewhat scattered out, but a couple of routes are predictable.
I figure it's time for some ground blinds. That way Wyatt can hunt it without me being with him or we can both hunt if the wind is right.
Here are pics of the two we built. We might build another if we see the need. We used the scraps that they left behind for materials. Lin
This Wyatt in one taken from deer's eye level. You can see how they cleared the timber.

Here is me in the other. We are not in our hunting duds, so maybe they wont see us this easy.

I have great respect for those of you who kill game with a stickbow from the ground. I have yet do it as I feel naked on the ground. I guess I should spend more time there, but just love the view from above.
-
When everything is right, theres nothing like being on the ground! Thanks' for the pics fellas! Jason
-
The blinds in my pics are about 75 yards apart. This evening I saw 4 does walk between the blinds. The only problem is that I was not in one of the blinds but just past them about 50 yards well out of range. Lin

Cool country you guys hunt in. Some really neat trees and forest. Charlie, that white oak is huge!I really like this post.

Some great blinds

Here is one from this year. It's on the edge of a field and about 2 and a half feet below the field. There is alos a little creek that runs behind it.
View from deer's perspective.

I cut shooting lanes into it but left it as tall as I could. The green went down as time went on but because the branches were cut with them still on most didn't fall off. I had to add a little more to it was it settled during the season but I sure saw a lot of deer in it.
I missed one doe and killed another from this spot. Unfortunately the only bucks I saw were on the other side of the creek, on land I don't have access to hunt.
-
There are some very nice ground set ups posted. It has motivated me to get back on the ground and hunt.
-
Great pics. I feel inspired for next year. David Mitchell, I tend to agree on back cover being critical. I haven't hunted much from the ground, but I've had several deer encounters walking and as long as I was perfectly still with decent camo, the right wind, and there was brush immediately behind me, the deer didn't seem to notice even at close range.
I also saw that mil surplus camo netting in some of the pics, and that stuff works great as fill in. Probably all of you already know, but anything solid or mostly solid (even if a camo pattern) will attract attention. But that stuff works!
-
Great ideas and great pictures. I just finished reading G. Fred Asbell's ground hunting book. I really liked the chapter about fixed and mobile ground blinds. These pictures and ideas make those ideas come to life. Thanks for sharing guys.
-
POSTED AGAIN......later in the season.
I sat down inside this "circle" of broomweed with a slit to shoot though from a slightly elevated position in relation to the feeder and ground. Each use I move the broomweed around a tad to change the shooting lanes. This is basically a deer highway intersection and a property line intersection. There's a nice sinkhole behind that feeder always full of fresh water too. Looks to have been created where animals were slipping under the highfence.
It's a DEADLY spot, seemingly no matter how much I'm there.

"Become the Tree". Good one. I've got just the spot for a natural ground blind and this thread is all the encouragement I need. About 100 yards behind the house, with no trees big enough to get into yet. Early morning movement, so a few hours before work. I wasn't sure if it would work, now I'll get a chance to find out. IN OCTOBER! Oh well, something to look forward to...
-
Thank's for all the help fella's! Jason
-
Just get in there, make sure you have holes to shoot from, and room to draw and maneuver your bow. This actually takes some planning as you never quite know where the deer are going to walk by from. When you are super close, drawing without hitting a branch with a limb tip can be really tough, and you might smack a branch upon release. If you can, get brush overhead too, and camo up! Ground hunting will put your heart in your mouth. Just watch.
-
Great looking ground blinds fellas, wish I has some pics to post. Some great ideas. Don
-
Got some new ideas to try from this thread. Thanks guys!

Really old post I know but I have been searching for additional information. I wish a lot of the photo's were still visible. I guess there is no way to view them all is there?

Here's one of my daughter that got her a close encounter (less than 20 yards with an 8 point and a 3 point buck) two falls ago. The view your looking at is the view they saw and I was sitting in there with her. Pretty simple, just one pine bough zip tied to the tree at the center point and mostly cover behind with stump and logs.
One thing to consider is the nature of the general area. In this spot, there's numerous stumps, blowdowns etc. If you have one ground blind built in the middle of a mature woods and nothing else around like it, you'll probably draw extra scrutiny. Face cover and stillness are keys.
-
I hope more of you successful ground hunters will add more photos. i would like to get back to hunting on the ground more often. I have tried a few set-ups and some have worked - but with limited success. Thanks for sharing.

I shot my Ks doe from this ground blind. It had burlap wrapped around T-posts, so not "all natural", but it worked great. This was in the middle of a CRP field with not a single tree within 400yds! The blind is just to the left of the wooden post.

Excellent looking blind Bisch! That thing really looks natural there.
