Title: Short Longbow-what to buy?
Post by: NewtoTrad2008 on December 15, 2010, 10:54:00 AM
I found out that I will be getting a little extra this year and I think another bow is in order. I love my Mohawk but would like to try some thing a little shorter, I am thinking 56" or so, 50-55# @ 26" and tillered for three under. I like the looks of the shrew and have heard greeat things about them. What others are out there that I should take a look at? What should I look out for?

I just thought of something, is a short longbow an oxymoron, or am I just a moron?  :smileystooges:

Give Dave Beeler's Tracker Longbow consideration. Not saying you should buy it, just saying look at it and think about it.

I have, or have had, both a Dave Beeler 56" Hybrid, and a 56" Big Jim ThunderChild. You couldn't go wrong with either. I'm on the list for a 2pc ThunderChild and will probably get it in a 54" length as I draw 26".
You won't find either of these come-up used much, as the ThunderChild is a fairly new model and I expect folks will hold on to them, they are awesome bows . Dave Beeler just started offering his again after a lay-off and I don't know what his wait is.
Shrews have a long wait, but have been around long enough that getting hold of one used is easier. Watch the classifieds for one of them.

Lost Creek bows are the best I have shot. Chad is a great guy and you can't go wrong with him. I draw 26.5-27" and have his 54" NAT. Mine is 51lbs @ 26 and had a pass through on my black bear this fall. Don't buy without at least talking to Chad. What ever you decide enjoy it and shoot it well.

If you're going under 58", go with a Shrew. I'm kind of short bow nut and I can't find anything more efficient or comfortable to shoot than Ron's design.

There are lots of good quality short bows available, but wait time on some are tooooo long.

Steve Gorr at Cascade Bows (a sponsor) has recently introduced the Brush Hawk, a 56" longbow, that has already become his best seller.

Info on the bow is not on his site, but do a search in "PowWow" for Cascade and pull up the multi-page thread called "New Bow from Cascade Archery".  There are lots of pics and info on this bow, and at a very attractive price.

My wifes Lost Creek NAT took less than a month, at real a nice price.  I wonder how it compares in delivery times to other bows.  Speed wise I am really impressed, but for its accuracy and forgiveness that is so remarkable it is beyond anything that I would believe out of a 54" bow had I not seen it myself.

Yep my vote goes to the Classic Hunter, absolutly amazing bows. I draw my 56" to 29 1/2" with no problem....and as for short bows being "sensitive", I dont think so, at least not the Shrew Classic Hunter.

Only had a few shots out of a couple, thunder child and brush hawk, both good, but the brush hawk is what I would have taken home,

St. Joe River makes a 58" longbow,  I have a 60" and draw 29 1/2 inches on it and many that thing is a rocket!!  At 54# it shoots faster than my friends 63# Black Widow recurve!! The other things that impressed me was I was able to shoot my 535gr. carbons, 615gr. Alluminums, and 700gr Ceadars all with perfect arrow flight in inside a 3" group at 15 yards without have the change a thing!!  Talk about stable and forgiving bow to shoot wich is hard to find in a long draw on a shot bow!!They make some shorter recurves as well and those things SCREAM an arrow. Worth checking out!!

That is exactly my experience too, including the same draw length.

I have a martin rebel that I use for bowfishing  that is 52" that I just love.  I have a 29" draw and it doesn't stack.

I owned a Shrew a long time ago and it stacked on my 29" draw. Ron makes a great bow, but the one that I owned wasn't a good fit for me.

Some of the older Bear recurves are a smaller bow and are good shooters.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned a Morrison ILF... I have a Mini 14 [ actually a 13" ] riser and a set of carbon/maple cored 58# "C" length L/B limbs ....exactly 56" amo and 53 1/2" n-n when strung.. beautiful, stable, smooth, fast, bow and it's easy to travel with... besides the fact that it allows some adjustment to draw weight and tiller adjustment.

I personaly have owned several of the ones previously mentioned and this bow along with a 2 pc C/H Shrew [ wish John Mc Colough made a 2 pc. Griffin this short ] Would be at the top of my "A" list.

With your draw length, you could actually use "B" length limbs and get a 54" Bow on a mini riser or go up to a 15" riser with "B" limbs and still have a 56" bow.

No one has mentioned Maddog. He makes longbows from 52" and up. I have several 52" bows that draw out to 27" no problem.I draw 26" and love mine. Best part is the wait is only 2-3 months and the best prices around.

I've shot several Mohawk longbows (as well as many others like Hornes, Shrew and Black Widdow) owned by my friend and fellow Trad Ganger, Bentpole. He would know if Mohawk makes any short bows.In my opinion you can't go wrong with a Thunderstick because this is the best shooting bow I've shot.
I own a 56" Thunderstick Mag that's 45# @ 28".

You beat me to it. If you are drawing 28" or under, he makes a 56" Kanati that would be awesome. Nothing against the Shrews, but you can buy a new Kanati, a quiver, a dozen arrows, broadheads, an arm guard, a glove or tab, and still have money left over compared to a new Shrew. Jason's bows are smoking fast, dead in the hand, deathly quiet, and stack free. The quality is second to none.

Disclaimer: I am not related to or associated with Jason Kendall in any way (except as a customer), but I have shot enough of his bows to know what they are. My Kanati is my go-to bow, and I can't see that changing...ever.   :readit:

I don't shoot a real short one but the Kanati I believe is a great buy in a short longbow. I have two at 60 inch length. They are shooters and they come back 30 inches just fine. They are a very fair price and the delivery is way shorter than a shrew. I have shot both. I think the Kanati is one of the best buys going. Not putting down a shrew at all either. They are a beautiful bow.
There is my two cents - jwingman

WOW! I had no idea there were so many choices. I wish I could shoot them all. Now comes the hard part, making a decision. Thank you everyone for you advice, I am making a list and checking it twice(I couldn't resist). I guess now it will come down to talking to the boyers and the archers that shoot them. Here is my list so far, price was one of the deciding factors.

Big Jim Thunderchild
Beeler Tracker
Lost Creek NAT
Thunderstick
Kanati
Cascade Brush Hawk
Dwyer Endeavor

For those of you that have one, any input would be appreciated, include how the boyer was to deal with.

I ordered a Dwyer Endeavor in Oct. and should receive it in July or Aug.It took me a year to make up my mind. When talking with Dave I wanted 63#@29" and there was no problem and they are great to work with, now the wait 9 months seems like a long time but for a great bow it is worth it.

It is smooth to draw, comfortable to grip, and the design works well for me. Dave is a great guy and an excellent person to deal with. You can't go wrong with a Beeler longbow.
