My first deer of the season. Been a long tough season with many campfire tales gathered to tell. Been holding out on the does but just had to shoot one tonight as I am out of jalapeno summer sausage.
Here is where my evening began at 1:30 this afternoon. At 2:15 a willing doe came through crunching on acorns. She got a little to close and looked away so what's a man to do?

Here is what I found the first place she stopped at about 80 yards out.

Her first bed at about 100 yards from the tree.

And her final resting spot about 3 yards past her first bed.

Have never used Woodsman broad heads so I bought some and have been packing one in my quiver just to see what all the fuss was about. This doe was 10 yards from my tree and quartering slightly to me. The Woodsman hit her perfect but did not poke through the opposite side as it hit her opposite leg bone. I'm shooting 50lbs @ 28 and bet I only 3/4 drew as it was very cold. Massive blood trail for a high lung entry hit with no exit hole. Very impressed with the Woodsman Elites.

Nice one Tom! I too have been letting the does go. I got to hunt alot during November, but have not had a chance to get in a tree since then. Looks like next week, I will get a little time. Since I too have not shot any deer this year, I will be more than willing to take a doe if given the opportunity!

Well Done TJ! You've got just the right amount of snow there. Enough to quiet things and make the woods look beautiful, but not enough to make it hard to get around. Emjoy the sausage!

Excellent deer TJ! That must be quite a thrill shooting a deer with snow cover-- I haven't done that since I lived in Indiana way back in 1986 or so and it wasn't traditional.
I love that deep winter hide too.

CONGRATS Tom
-
Nice deer. Great post.
There is just nothing like the feeling, after the slamming adrenaline rush of the post-shot minutes and the anticipation of the bloodtrail, as that relief and welling up of thanks from that first glimpse of the deer laying up ahead.
I felt it again in your post. Thanks!

Exactly Charlie, glad I could take you along. I walked to the truck and then tried to cut the deer trail instead of following blood/tracks from the spot of the shot. I got to where I thought the deer had been and there where tracks everywhere with no blood. It took me 10 minutes or so to find her trail and was a huge relief when I saw the blood. I instantly knew she wouldn't be far. There is nothing like our game.
-
looks like a nice one Tom. Congrats! I been wondering how your hunting has been going. Wish I could get out late season this year. I didn't think it got that cold down there.
-
Very nice stand placement!
Congrats on your deer!

I started using the Woodsman Elites them last year also.........I like them. The last two seasons I've shot a 5x5 elk,two turkeys and three deer with them. They leave a good blood trail!
-
Mighty fine table fare there TJ. I too love the peno sausage. me and longbowben made 80#'s worth a couple weeks ago.
-
You guys make your own Mike, that's awesome. Wish I had the time and equipment to do it. What do you mix with the venison? Give us your recipe if it's not top secret.
-
congrats TJ!!!
-
Great pictures! I especially liked the one looking up at your treestand. You obviously picked a good spot with the multi-trunks. Congratulations on your doe. I'm eating a venison sausage sandwich as I'm pecking away here and know you'll enjoy some great eating! Best wishes for 2011 from Iowa!
