Hello Everyone!

I'm using some spruce arrows.
I have my arrows tuned up nice.
Now that Deer season is over           I'm thinking about tweaking my setup.

I'm shooting about 12.3 grn/# and 18.3%FOC.

I'm thinking I'd like to strengthen my shaft at the tip without adding weight. I realize I could use a steel internal footing and a lighter broadhead but I don't particularly want to change my broadheads.

I'm using a 200 Grizz on a 45# bow shooting about 145ft/sec. I'm used to the trajectory. This setup puts the most energy into the arrow of many setups I've tried with this bow. I admit the setup is sorta on the edge of being under-powered. This is why I want to use the long and lean Grizz.

Anyway.. I'm thinking of using the internal footing jig and putting in a carbon fiber tube or possibly a carbon fiber rod for a footing.

I'm thinking this won't add too much wt (might be a little less wt) but would be stronger.

Anyone ever try this?

To give it to you straight, I think a lot of folks who read this are thinking why go to so much work to solve a problem that only questionably exists.

I hear what you're saying.

I enjoy tinkering with stuff.
I like to rework triggers,float barrels, etc on my guns.
I like to experiment with shot shell reloading.

I shot many different setups through this bow just to see which one was the most efficient. Even though there wasn't really any big difference between them.

I chose a tapered Sitka spruce arrow to shoot because I wanted to get the highest FOC I could while using a wood arrow and have the strongest shaft I could. As it ends up Sitka spruce has a very high strength to weight ratio. Highest of commonly used arrow woods.

I just like to play around with my stuff and try to make things the best I can.
It's fun for me and is one of the big joys of Trad archery for ME.
I don't consider it work.
For me, it's almost as fun as shooting.
Shooting sometimes can feel like work too when I'm not having a good day.

i use 1/8" bamboo skewer to stiffen up the point area on woodies that i don't wanna add real up front weight.  just a touch of titebond glue, bop in the boo, wait for the cure and it's good to go.  for instant use, i replace the titebond with medium viscosity cya.

I think that what you are proposing sounds interesting. It also sounds like Rob is successfully using bamboo to do basically the same thing, so, why not try using carbon. If you get positive results, document the process you're using and post them. I say, if you enjoy tinkering, then it's not the destination, but rather the journey that is important, so enjoy the trip.    :cool:

Hmmmm.  Now, if you drill out a cedar shaft for a carbon core and then sleeve the outside with an aluminum tube you may have the ultimate arrow!


I'm going to get a T-Shirt made that says "I refuse to FOC with my cedar shafts"

I guess you can play with all types of material ti internal foot.Coat hanger,BB gun pellets,lead shot, ect. Your gonna be busy in the off season. I think with BB's and lead shot you could get some fairly accurate weighted shafts.

seeing the "ti" in your post got me thinking...
Titanium is a little pricey though.
Wonder if it would be better than carbon fiber?
Have to check thermal expansion rates.
Hate to have my arrows crack in hot weather.
I really doubt it would be a problem at all.
