Does anybody have a bow made of this wood? Seems i had a duck call a few years back made of this and it was beautiful. I just put a deposit for a new bow and was considering using this wood so if you have any pics please post. Thanks

I had Craig at HH Archery make a Half Breed bow blank for me,and I sent him a piece of goncalo alves for the riser.I like goncalo alves for a riser wood, some is pretty plain looking and some has some nice color.Don't have any pic's of mine but it is one of my keepers.

Most of the Herters perfection bows were made of it. A lot of people thought it was a type of rosewood but my Uncle's friend worked there and it was all Goncalo alves according to him. It comes from central and south america, some call it tigerwood. I've got a huge 72" Herters made of it but its stripped bare right now, not much to look at. heres an older Herters
I've seen a few Cari-bows made of it also.
oops, image too wide, no more than 640, please

Smith and Wesson revolver grips have been made of this nice wood for many years. Some of the earlier Bear bows from the late 60's (Kodiak Hunter) were made of Goncalo Alves, which is also called Tigerwood or Brazilian Koa.
I'm not sure why it's not used more frequently.

Pittsley Predator. Goncola Alves (also called Tigerwood) and Bubinga riser.

I read somewhere that most of it grows in protected areas, I don't think its as readily available anymore? Not sure though.......
NICE Predator!!.

They called it "Zebrawood" back then - same tree (Astronium graveolens). (Should look familiar, Blackhawk!)

Zebrawood is an entirely different thing Stump, ZW grows in Africa and is rarely even superficially similar at most to GA. Highly figured GA is hard to beat for beauty and is one of my two favorite woods.

Sorry, I had bad info. Thought the difference was whether it was edge-grain or quarter-sawn.
African Zebrawood (like my Pearson) is Microberlinia bisulcata
vs. South American Zebrawood (aka "Goncalo Alves). I will go apologize to my S&W. ;)
Dopey me - I had a bad release. :nono: Like lots on the Internet - there are conflicting descriptions.
http://www.advantagelumber.com/gonco.htm
Goncalo Alves - Other Names: Tigerwood, Brazilian Koa, Zebrawood, Urunday-Para, Mura, Bois De Zebre, Chibatao, Guarita, Aderno
Not surprising many woods may have "Zebrawood" as another name. I'm not the only one confused.

Very hard wood also takes a beatin and looks great!

You guys figured out the difference between zebrawood and GA. I was about to explain the difference, then figured I'd better read the entire thread.
Every now and then, one can find some fine examples from the Grayling-era bows of Bear....although lots of that wood would have made plain 'ol 2X4s look exotic. Still....there's some really great figured GA on some of the 68 Grizzly and 69 Kodiak Hunter/Kodiak Magnum bows. The really nice ones are absolutely striking, but like I said, you're apt to find more plain figure than not.

Goncalo Alves and curley myrtle riser with spalted myrtle veneers. I love my Dryad Orion!

I think Felix from Italy has a couple of really nice Bears in Tigerwood (Goncalo Alves). I read somewhere that the dust and oil from this wood is an irritant somewhat like poison ivy

Let's get this back to the top to see some more!

I killed a pretty special critter last year with my GA bow. I'll have to look thru the pics and see if one actually shows the wood with the critter.
-
very nice wood
-
Though not a true rosewood,Goncalo Alves is also sometimes called Santos Rosewood and comes in a WIDE range of colors. If you want to see a lot of samples, click on www.hobbithouseinc.com, (http://www.hobbithouseinc.com,) the top of the page will read "You are probably looking for one of the following": Your 1st choice is hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics, click on it and then click on G from the alphabet and scroll through many, many examples

Bear made some great looking GA bows in 68-69.
-
Great information! Very beautiful bows everyone.
-
I have this piece, it should be enough for 2 risers.. (http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt46/Robertfishes/tigerwood.jpg)

First off - these bows DO NOT belong to me. They are owned by a bowyer, Veriano Marchi, from Italy. He goes by "knife" over on Rich's site. I hope he doesn't mind me showing off his great old Bears!
As I mentioned previously on this thread, in 68 and 69, Bear made a few bows from GA. A lot of it does not impress, but every now and then, WOW!
This is what GREAT GA looks like:

You have some great old Bears there, "knife"! The K-Mag and Griz are top shelf examples of GA.
