Title: Last weekend of the season Buck with Morrison
Post by: Longbow338 on February 01, 2011, 07:13:00 PM
Well it all started when one of my buddies Tom Pittman (Spurs) came down to hunt the last weekend of deer season with me.  I had been seeing alot of deer across the black top road on a 134 acres that had seen very little hunting pressure all year.  I had killed 2 does there the weekend before.  Well I was trying to get Tom a good buck with his bow and or gun.  It is primitive weapon here in mississippi the last 2 weeks of the season.  Although there is not to much primitive about a 35whelen with a scope.  None the less he headed out for an afternoon hunt.  Tom saw several bucks and doe but they were in the food plot on the far side of the field.  I had been hunting another spot actually filming another buddy who had seen three shooters the day before of which we saw none.  Well that night we devised a plan to hunt both plots in the 134 acre ag field.  During the middle of the day we hung a locon in each plot.  I was going to hunt where Tom had been the evening before and he would hunt the other plot where the bucks were.  Well anybody that has hunted MS or anywhere in the south for that matter knows that deer rarely if ever do the same thing.  We had both come to the realization that we were going to see nothing that afternoon. Well we headed to the stand about 3:30 wind was out of the south south west which was not very good for me if the deer came out in the plot.  About 4:30 i began to here deer in the privot thicket behind me then i heard them start crossing the creek.   Before I knew it I had 10 doe and yearlings in the plot dead down wind.  They stayed there eating until dark I would say that the ozonics did its job as it had for me the whole year.  About 5:25 i heard faint grunts and deer walking across the creek i stood up and pulled up my binos for a closer look.  It was a doe followed by 2 bucks one of which was pushing 160.  I picked up my rifle put it on fire and started to sqeeze the trigger then i thought you no i have no desire to shoot this deer with a gun so i let him walk hoping they would cross the creek.  They were in no hurry to cross either.  At 5:30 there were 32 deer in the field.  Tom had chosen the wrong side for this afternoon.  He was seeing alot of deer but they were to far.  At 5:57 much to my suprise I heard the doe cross the creek then I heard the bucks.  The doe came out and walked 10 yards from the base of my tree here came the bucks.  The first buck came to 17 yards and froze loking the other way I started to draw my bow and he turned and looked dead at my tree.  So I am sitting there at half draw unsure of what to do after about 15 seconds he turned his head back to the other buck again.  By this time it had gotten really dark could just see his body.  Well I got to full draw and anchored really solid picked a spot and let the arrow go.  The buck jumped high rear leg kick,  I reached for my binos and to my disgust I saw the buck I shot run by the bigger buck  I had shot the smaller of the 2 bucks. I heard him hit the creek and it sounded like he was having a hard time getting up the bank on the other side of the creek.  Well I decided to return to the camp having not seen the deer fall.  Did not look for blood my arrow or anything.  We ate supper and relaxed well tried to until about 9:00  then we checked the weather and it was 100% chance of rain starting at 7 in the morning.  We went to look for him then.  We immediatly found great blood and my arrow in 2 pieces found both ends blood up to the wrap as if it was a pass through that when he jumped and broke the the shaft about 6"from the head and ran a few yards before the tail end of the shaft fell out.  We tracked blood to the creek about 15 yards then I shined my light into the creek there he was a nice 8pt had only gone 25 yards. The abowyer wapati and the Morrison ILF had done its Job. It was an excellent end to a season that I was not sure I would even kill a deer i had acl surgery on the 2cd of september.  Doc said no climbing stands so that put a major kink in my usual style of hunting .  I was restricted to locon and ladder stands only.  I ended the year with 11 deer with my Morrisons all in all it was a great season.

Another great memory for two longtime hunting partners.  I was glad to be there with you bro.  You forgot to mention our little tracker Jethro.  He is learning fast and is in the bottom pic.

The buck jumped high rear leg kick, I reached for my binos and to my disgust I saw the buck I shot run by the bigger buck I had shot the smaller of the 2 bucks.

Disgust?  Surely you jest....what an awesome deer!  Congratulations!

Ole Jethro is a catahoula and at 11 weeks old is 3 for 3 on daytime deer finds.   Have not worked with him on any night blood lines yet so did not take him after the buck.  And yes the Kanati is the only way to go for a quiver in my opinion.

Good buck and story, ugly guys though and you forgot to tell everyone that I , the master deer scouter, was the first to go to the unpressured 134 acres. by the way longbow 338 is my brother in law and Spurs is one of my closest friends so hopefully no one will take the ugly guys quote to heart. Great pics also, i need the picture taker to teach me those tricks to make the background look out of focus. Cool

Very nice deer, Congrats.
From reading your story it looks like your wapiti broke. If you want to give us at Abowyer a call we will get you set up with a new head because of the guarantee.

The abowyer did not break it was still razor sharp after it passed through     the shaft broke about 6" from the tip.  That was the 3rd deer with the same head after a quick touch up on the wheel it will be ready for more.

Don't worry about the Abowyer.  I am already drooling over some of these heads for turkey season.  I was with Will, and the first thing I said while tracking was, "I have to change to these Heads."  After I saw that it blew through the shoulder i was impressed to say the least!!!!
